  1. Hi, yes I have had Stacer boats where Telwater has warranted paint if it is an application problem which flakes on checkerplate tend to be-blistering paint is another subject all together and trust me EVERY manufacturer looks at each case on its merit and there are two sides to every story-but we have a very good working relationship with them. If a dealer goes into bat and has a long history with any company you would be surprised what some companies do. The simple facts are Telwater would not be where they are today if they made bad products and their reputation is good and as why I said they are the manufacturer of choice for dealers that have been doing this and know a thing or two about boats. A person who decided to start a boatshop here in Sydney could not just ring up Telwater and start selling S or Q, but they could ring up pretty much any other brand and start selling them if they wanted to-simple facts of the marine industry. Cheers, Huey.
  2. In my opinion they are painted correctly and I for one do not see alot of issues with paint-if you think differently than that is fine by me. The OP does not go further than just saying "blemishes" so not sure what that means but if it is blistering paint then most of the time it is from scratches or dis-similar metals-only by seeing it could one determine the cause. I only replied to this post because you claimed they do not use primer which is wrong and do you have the serial number of your friend's Q and if you find any alloy boat builder that makes the sort of trailerboats, for the same sort of money a Quintrex is, that warrants paint for the affects of being used in salt water then I would like to know that brand-because I sure have not come across one. Yes importing is popular because some brands do things better than us here, more so on the glass side, but not sure if you have seen many of the US brands of alloy boats, in my opinion they are not as good as what the big companies do here and I bet if you bought one of the US alloy boats, that are made for pretty much their freshwater lakes and you had paint problems I doubt they would warrant them either in our environment-could be wrong but the times I have been over there and been in their alloy boats some leave alot to be desired and if the dollar drops, I think the importation of boats would dry up because the cost of getting the boats here.If the dollar was say around 70 to even 80 cents to the US dollar I doubt many companies or individuals would still do it. As with anything there are very good brands in the US too (I went for a run in a couple Kingfisher alloy boats last month at the G2 launch) and they were very impressive boats in not only ride, but construction and finish/build quality but the price reflected that too-alot more than 1-3% than what even the top shelf brands like Extreme cost here. I think best to agree to disagree, you do not think the paint is upto scratch but I do and you look around the country, the big, long term dealers tend to stock and sell one of three 3 brands of alloy boats that this company makes whereas the lesser dealers, for a better word, will sell and most likely not carrying much stock of another manufacturer's boats. According to your logic, all of these very experienced (some like us with over 50 years stocking and servicing all brands of boats)boat dealers must not know what they are doing then if they choose to stock a brand of boat from Telwater because they are so bad in their painting process. I wish your friend luck with his Q. PS-here is a photo of a Telwater built boat that is etch primed in a climate controlled, then inspected and painted whatever colour the dealer or customer ordered-being white or even two tone. I doubt many other brands have the funds to have climate controlled booths to do their painting.
  3. Hi, I will post a picture if you do not believe me or this owner, or you could supply a serial number for the boat and I can find out more. If they do not use primer it is strange that, as I said for $20, you can buy a can of primer and the matching white to do any paint repairs on a Telwater boat. You are splitting hairs comparing a Quintrex to a 125ft Austal/Oceanfast alloy boat so yes I am wrong and if you want to get pedantic "some" alloy boats warrant paint but my point was no production alloy boat builder, and there are not many left here in Oz, warrant paint. Yes I am sure Telwater and anyone else could warrant paint but the end user would pay for it in a much higher priced boat and it is like me comparing the paint on the $20K and more dearer custom built Extreme boat we stock vs the Stacer boats we choose to stock too-the finish is superior on the Extreme but you pay for that fit and finish. It is pretty much the same in any industry-comparing say a Kia to a Mercedes is not a fair comparison as is your comparison,it is not an apples to apples comparison. Cheers, Huey.
  4. Hi, Brunswick owned Navman (NZ company) for a few years, the name was changed to Northstar (an old name OS) and then it was sold to Navico who discontinued the brand a few years ago. The Navman/Northstar were OK units in their day, but compared to electronics you buy today they are way outgunned-pretty much the same with all brands from even a coupel fo years ago-things change fast in that area. Yes back in the day Telwater boat brands, when they were rigging Merc as part of the BMT, they also came with Navman due to the tie-in. Cheers, Huey.
  5. Telwater use primer and you can even buy it in a spray can to do repairs and most paint problems are due to people installing extras with SST screws-we only fit extras with alloy rivets.. The paint process is very good and if you do not think so you should go for a factory tour next time you are up around the Gold Coast. No alloy brand warrants paint.
  6. Brunswick does not own Navico and never have.
  7. You would be hard pressed to notice the difference on that engine so save the money and buy the cheaper of the two.
  8. No problem Ahab, that is a very good price-well done and I hope it checks out OK for you. Cheers, Huey.

    Spark Plugs

7 years, more so if used in salt water, can lead to sticky thermos which in turn leads to cold running engines and spark plugs that look like yours especially if the oil you use is a dino oil. A engine of that age wants to use the plugs you have in her.
  10. Hi, not really accurate, the Lowrance has CHIRP for better clarity, both do combo units and structure on the Navico products gives you DI and SI and they have spot light giving 360 degree viewing like 360 (but a fair bit cheaper-but then you need a cable steer electric-so swings and rundabouts), so all in all pretty equal. There are advantages and disadvantages with both brands-like anything in life and the best value for money at the moment is the Simrad NSS units, that can add sonar hub to get CHIRP-if you want but for most trailer boats the NSS with the correc tranny does a great job, Structure scan to get DI and SI, Radar, Sonic hub and many other cool things. Also the Simrad is a touch screen/button color combo that can not be beaten on price at present. Simrad are the level up from Lowrance and the best is the new NSS Evo2 if money is no object but as I say to everyone looking at electronics, let us know a budget and I will give you my opinion which I think is better. Last week we fitted a good system with the HB and M/K linked to each other so that is a bonus they offer. This week we have/will be fitting a Lowrance HDS-7 touch with LSS-2 and also if time permits a Simrad NSS8 touch screen. To get structure scan you require two transducers and as to which company you talk to both say that is an advantage (elements doing dedicated jobs) with the other say it is a disadvantage-the HB is all in one and they claim that is better. Cheers, Huey.

    Spark Plugs

Hi, the best and safest plug to run in any outboard is the one the manufacturer recommends. If the engine is tuned correctly a good plug after a hard run is a light tan colour so if you are not seeing that you want to make sure the timing is right, the oil injection system is set-up right and the engine is running at correct temps-especially at low speeds. The engine wants to run hotter at low speeds and the that is the job of the thermos, so if they have not been serviced in this 17 year old engine, maybe good time to do it. Cheers, Huey.
  12. Hi, the OIS system on your engine needs the QL78YC and as for most shops, can not comment on what you have found, but ALOT of E/J used this ignition back in the day so if they do not carry them-more fool them and in any industry you get good places and bad places-this industry tends to have more of the latter unfortunately. You will "hear" all sorts of things on the internet and most things I "hear" are complete rubbish. Cheers, Huey.
  13. Hi Ahab, sounds like a good deal and yes there is dia software you would need and comms cable to "talk" to that engine. Cheers, Huey.

    THE Merc!

Hi, we see a sunk engine almost weekly-doing a 8HP Mariner at present and yes the basic carby 2-Stroke are pretty hardy and as long as someone gets at it as soon as it comes up for air they tend to survive. If the engine is brought to the surface and then left for a few days that is when the damage happens. An engine is best left under water until you can get someone to look at it. Funny how the Merc rep fails to mention that engine is not really a Merc, more a Tohatsu with Merc stickers on it, but in fairness any carby engine can survive this sort of thing if it is not subject to air and the corrosion that happens internally once that happens.. Cheers, Huey.
  15. Hi, Brooker are OK-built to a price so the second hand price should reflect that too. It would perform very well with that HP and the one of the many cool things with E-TEC's is you can download a history report and check accurate engine hours, engine temps, engine RPM profile and alot more even how many times the engine has been started. This tool is very handy when looking at a second hand engine because it "dobs" on the owner if they have done anything wrong with it. If you think the price is fair and the rig checks out it would be a good little boat. What do they want for it and what are you hoping to get it for? Cheers, Huey.
  16. Hi, no such thing as a "stock" prop because no outboard manufacturer knows what hull a particular engine is going to go on. It is upto the dealer and their skill, or lack of in most cases, to fit the right prop and if you are only seeing 5200RPM at WOT you are overpropped and lugging that outboard. You should drop down a couple of pitches no matter what material a prop is made off. Cheers, Huey.
  17. Hi, no I prefer DI engines because they tick all the boxes, but most time when you buy used, unlike new where you can choose whatever you like, the used market you can not pick and choose most time. The problem is I doubt you will find a tidy runabout of the size you mentioned with a clean tech engine for your budget of $12K. Most tend to be a bit more than that unless they have some problems or high hours. The one I mentioned is a few more grand than that because of what it has and very little use. Cheers, Huey.
  18. Hi, as Brett said we need to know WOT RPM to see if you can change props and get more speed, but then acceleration will suffer. I would not believe everything you "hear" about speeds with boats-people always like to say they go faster than they really do especially once it is confirmed it is accurate speed like with a GPS- Speedos are very inaccurate in boats. Also if you have an alloy prop, which I guess you do, then upgrading to a SST can help but again speed is really irrelevant in determining if you are propped right-WOT RPM is the most important. Cheers, Huey.
  19. Hi, any clean tech engine have the same "electronics" on the engine like computers and sensors so that is inncorrect to say new fuel injected 2-stroke are the only ones to have these. Buying anything second hand is a gamble and sometimes the choices are limited. Budget will affect what technology, either dirty or clean and that is a fair size, and therefor price difference from a 4.2M to a 5.0M boat. what are you looking to spend because we have a very good condition 4.5M Seajay with 50HP Honda at present that might be just what you are after? Cheers, Huey.
  20. Hi, as mentioned you can get electric outboard with generic transducers that can connect to different brands, if that is what you mean by simple hookup. If you are talking about the very cool link version in the M/K range that "talks" to the H/B and allows you to find a good location on the sounder, say an interesting ledge with SI showing you alot of structure and fish, then pressing a button on the controller via the ethernet link the Minn Kota will take you to that location, then no MG does not have that ability with any brand of sounder. Cheers, Huey.
  21. Hi, I choose not to stock MG for a few reasons and I choose to stock M/K because I like them. mii11X is right, Johnson outdoors own M/K and H/B so they can talk to each other if you get a link version M/K. MG and Lowrance are two different companies and do not "talk" to each other the same way. With both you can get universal transducers but they are a compromise. As for the original questions the big problem will be the runabout you have and that the bow area does not work well with bow mount units and they are the ones that have I-Pilot. The pricture you posted is a bow mount tiller model that they do not really bring down under and not the best to operate. We have fitted bow mounts to runabout but it more complicated and as a result dearer than a console style boat. Cheers, Huey.
  22. Hi, yes in time the G2 will filter its way down in HP. Not sure what you mean by unburnt oil residue but as I said the used oil in an E-TEC is included in its emissions while the used 4-Stroke oil, and where it ends up (could be down the sink) is not. In total emissions, that is HC and NOx, even the G1 is up there with the cleanest if not the cleanest and that is why it is the ONLY outboard to win an award from the EPA and when CO is factored in, that is no good for humans, it is even cleaner. The new G2 take emissions to another total level altogether and is along way ahead of the pack any way you want to look at it. CO emissions are going to be a big issue in the future because of the damage it can do to humans. All 3 Star engines are clean it is just that some engines are a fair bit cleaner than the standard and other technologies. Cheers, Huey.
  23. For only $150 you can get the Elite-7 which trust me is much better screen size for a combo and we sell alot more 7's than 5's. The chart is a must have we supply both and compared to the some of those places mentioned we know what we are talking about. Bang for your buck right here today the Elite-7 HDI is hard to beat.
  24. +1 to what Whaler said and also these can and do cause fuel restrictions and that can led to expensive engine repairs no matter what brand. Not sure why you would need it though because if you have smartcraft the Tacho shows fuel flow without such a devise. Cheers, Huey.
  25. Hi, yes for the last few years I have no made much sense of the EPA site. Not sure what a Y F255 is, I suspect it should be 225HP and as you can see most are within 10% of the sticker, but HP is juts one side of the story and torque is much more important to how easy an outboard gets a boat up and going and I have driven pretty much all on that list plus the new G2 and nothing is close in raw power. Cheers, Huey.
