  1. Really not sure. Should I try it on a few different rods and see how it goes? I've just resorted to finding anything to wrap around my hand so it doesn't get cut up as bad.
  2. Ahh, yeah not to sure about mine there's the lever which I wriggle, I'll get some pics tomorrow. Bit there's also a knob on the handle side which you turn and when the lever is in the right spot it acts like a drag. Mine doesn't have a star drag.
  3. Ahh that would make sense, that's something that annoys me a bit with the 5:1 ratios. Its hard to bring your bait in slowly. But also a spin when you cast out a heap of line and have to bring it all back in lol. I'll do a bit more research into them for rock fishing, I rarely do it so have no idea. Is it true there is a Alvey for soft plastics? Yeah I like my 8ft rod for that. Yeah I can definitely see why, I just respooled mine with 20lbs mono. I guess on a kayak they constantly get wet so it's good having a tough reel. What about the snapper winch on a boat though?
  4. Sorry but what's a direct drive? I thought they a have drag. On mine there's this lever and I just wriggle it back and fourth until the clicker and drag comes on, I actually have no idea what it's for lol. I didn't realise you had to continuously hold the line on an Alvey, that might explain a bit then. Lmao, I know all about that one, have a bad braid cut still. I've never had my Alvey tangle, maybe mines just such a crap one. Also when I cast my Alvey I get these whip lash like marks on the back of my hand and it usually bleeds, so I'm guessing my technique is wrong?
  5. I recently started looking into alvey brand products as I have a couple and was quite curious. I found that there seems to be an alvey reel for basically everything. My main question is does anyone actually use an alvey for anything but beach fishing? Im not a big fan of mine, hence bearly ever use it. But now im really questioning if it would be worth taking out chasing some snapper. My next question is, do people actually use them for just general fishing and what do you spool them with? Also are they any good, I just find mine meh, does what i want it to and it works. Is there an advantage or even a reason to use alveys? does anyone spool braid onto them? Also are they a kind of alternative to overheads? They seem to hold a stupid amount of line, so Im guessing it would compete with the smaller overhead sizes? Thanks, im not planning on buying any just curious about them.
  6. I don't personally own one but my mate owns a couple. He use dawia tanacom and abolutely loves them. He has them spooled with 80lbs J braid. Hope this helps
  7. What about an overhead setup? an overhead setup maybe a tyrnos 30w on a wilson LBG rod. My big spin setup is a slammer 10500 spooled with 150 lbs braid on the saltist bw 802xh with 200 lbs leader. not reall suitable for kings but sure it would work and its an absolute tank.
  8. Yeah it's actually supposing how easy it can be to melt mono. But I was using a joining some stuff and using mono as a sewing thread and use a heat gun can't rember why but didn't melt the mono.
  9. The cheap aldi packs 😂 not much beats those little packs for restocking gear.
  10. Ahh alright thanks for clarifying, makes a lot more sense as I can picture it i
  11. Ahh, the silly fish finder strikes again. always a nucense when it doesn't work, especially when you want it to. still sounds like a nice day out. dont worry about it, just enjoy the time outdoors away from technology
  12. would it be worth respooling (so the mono is the backing) then putting a leader on? are you able to use hollow core braid on spinning reels? so it remove any knots and its easy to top up with extra line. Also another probably stupid question, but I have respooled my tr200g with braid backing then to mono topshot, so i have a decent amount of heavy line, instead of running strait braid which will get cut up on the reef as i found out the hard way.
  13. Thanks for the detailed reply. sorry for the stupid question but what is the axel?
  14. Would you recomend swapping it around? its only about 30-50m of mono so maybe it should be swapped? thanks. I do get where your coming from, but when stray lining for snapper on a reef, I though having a mono topshot would be helpful in surviving the reef instead of loosing expensive braid.
  15. I though if you have a braid ready spool, you dont need the tape? I built a little tensioning thing, which allows me to get the spool very tight and it means I can spool the braid on really tight. thanks for the tip though. I do the same things on some reels that are big enough to put some mono backing, I do.
  16. Hi everyone, recently I've been respooling my reels. Recently my go to have been a braid backing and then a mono topshot (not sure what you call it on a spin reel' it's about 30-50m worth of mono. Was this a good idea or should I spool it with the mono as backing? Also how do others like to spool their reels
  17. My main problem with just going an overhead, is will it give me something I already don't have and what would I be using it for. Vs a spin reel. Versatility is very important for me as I do about 60% land based and 40% kayak. This new setup will be pretty heavy, probably used for king's, big snapper, any tuna species ect. On another note I do have a tr200g with 20lbs mono which I'm thinking of respooling and using it for snapper flashers.
  18. What about the spinfisher Live liner for jigging? I think they have a higher gear ratio. It take a little while but now I've been having a bit of success on the jigs from the kayak 🙂, took long enough lol. What kind of basic overhead would you recommend?
  19. Sorry to ask this again. But I'm looking for some suggestions as for a new general purpose kayak setup. As I'm not 100% sure as to what I want to do but thinking along the lines of speed jigging, bottom bashing, live baiting, drift bait, basically everything. I have a few questions that I need some guidance on. First being, overhead or spinning? A small overhead like an ocean jigger, saltist, fathom ect on a jigging rod soun gods nice and having the lever is awesome for live bait ect. But am I limiting myself to only being able to use this off the kayak and if so, I'm potentially shooting myself in the foot. If I were to go spinning, I'm also limiting myself to not having the lever drag, which I'll definitely miss but they're more versatile. I'd be going a slammer 3 HS, as I much prefer the look, or a saragosa or stradic. Next question, baitrunner? This would bridge the gap between a lever drag and a spinning reel but, can you jig with them? Also how well would they suit my needs? What bait runners should I be chasing? I was thinking the baitrunner D or the spinfisher Live liner. Is there any other things I should be looking out for? Thanks
  20. you get yakkas in there. drop down a sabiki - my favorite is black magic shrimp sabiki I use the size 10 Burely s important and very helpful. as for gear, up to you. im thinking about getting a cheap sabiki rod as im on a kayak and the loose hooks are a nucense, but any light rod and reel will do. id suggest just use any old rod you have laying around and any reel
  21. yeah hopefully the guides will be fine. i was most worried about the tips snapping. the reels get stored inside the kayak so yep, not a problem
  22. how do you tell the difference between the old and the new?
  23. thanks very much. I have found a couple of siltar power tips for $10 but unfortunately in victoria. Thanks for the tip though. how good are the silstar powertips?
  24. Im looking for about 2 maybe 3 more 5'6 rods which are single peice and tough as nails. when I surf launch the kayak I tie all the rods together and lay them flat in the kayak so if I roll they wont brake. anyways, Im hopping to pick them up cheap second hand, maybe $10-20 each. they don't need tobe anything decent. just tough and take be able to take my reels. anyways some recomendations on what I should be looking out for would be much appreciated. I was thinking about some more penn allys, but theyre a little to expensive to be doing what im doing. was thinking on a bunch of jervis walker overhead rods but yeah not sure. Thanks
  25. Im not a big fan of alveys either. how I handle mine is to use it on a 8ft foot rod and just cast behind the breakers, so short casts. also wanted to add, the battle 2 is also great, I love mine but use it for jigging. As for backing and main line, depends on your target and wether you will be using your reel for other things. 50 lbs braid is way to much for bream, whiting ect,but perfect for jewfish, rays, sharks ect. I have spooled mine with a fair wack of braid and quite a bit of mono backing. if you just want to target whiting, breams ect, 20 lbs mono would be what id be going, maybe 20 lbs braid, and yes absolutely chuck a lot of backing on. id say 200-300m of braid would be good. Ive also had great sucess on my royobi reel with 15lbs mono, can't lob big sinkers but it works for what i want. all depends on your target species
