  1. Hi everyone, recently I've been respooling my reels. Recently my go to have been a braid backing and then a mono topshot (not sure what you call it on a spin reel' it's about 30-50m worth of mono. Was this a good idea or should I spool it with the mono as backing? Also how do others like to spool their reels
  2. My main problem with just going an overhead, is will it give me something I already don't have and what would I be using it for. Vs a spin reel. Versatility is very important for me as I do about 60% land based and 40% kayak. This new setup will be pretty heavy, probably used for king's, big snapper, any tuna species ect. On another note I do have a tr200g with 20lbs mono which I'm thinking of respooling and using it for snapper flashers.
  3. What about the spinfisher Live liner for jigging? I think they have a higher gear ratio. It take a little while but now I've been having a bit of success on the jigs from the kayak 🙂, took long enough lol. What kind of basic overhead would you recommend?
  4. Sorry to ask this again. But I'm looking for some suggestions as for a new general purpose kayak setup. As I'm not 100% sure as to what I want to do but thinking along the lines of speed jigging, bottom bashing, live baiting, drift bait, basically everything. I have a few questions that I need some guidance on. First being, overhead or spinning? A small overhead like an ocean jigger, saltist, fathom ect on a jigging rod soun gods nice and having the lever is awesome for live bait ect. But am I limiting myself to only being able to use this off the kayak and if so, I'm potentially shooting myself in the foot. If I were to go spinning, I'm also limiting myself to not having the lever drag, which I'll definitely miss but they're more versatile. I'd be going a slammer 3 HS, as I much prefer the look, or a saragosa or stradic. Next question, baitrunner? This would bridge the gap between a lever drag and a spinning reel but, can you jig with them? Also how well would they suit my needs? What bait runners should I be chasing? I was thinking the baitrunner D or the spinfisher Live liner. Is there any other things I should be looking out for? Thanks
  5. you get yakkas in there. drop down a sabiki - my favorite is black magic shrimp sabiki I use the size 10 Burely s important and very helpful. as for gear, up to you. im thinking about getting a cheap sabiki rod as im on a kayak and the loose hooks are a nucense, but any light rod and reel will do. id suggest just use any old rod you have laying around and any reel
  6. yeah hopefully the guides will be fine. i was most worried about the tips snapping. the reels get stored inside the kayak so yep, not a problem
  7. how do you tell the difference between the old and the new?
  8. thanks very much. I have found a couple of siltar power tips for $10 but unfortunately in victoria. Thanks for the tip though. how good are the silstar powertips?
  9. Im looking for about 2 maybe 3 more 5'6 rods which are single peice and tough as nails. when I surf launch the kayak I tie all the rods together and lay them flat in the kayak so if I roll they wont brake. anyways, Im hopping to pick them up cheap second hand, maybe $10-20 each. they don't need tobe anything decent. just tough and take be able to take my reels. anyways some recomendations on what I should be looking out for would be much appreciated. I was thinking about some more penn allys, but theyre a little to expensive to be doing what im doing. was thinking on a bunch of jervis walker overhead rods but yeah not sure. Thanks
  10. Im not a big fan of alveys either. how I handle mine is to use it on a 8ft foot rod and just cast behind the breakers, so short casts. also wanted to add, the battle 2 is also great, I love mine but use it for jigging. As for backing and main line, depends on your target and wether you will be using your reel for other things. 50 lbs braid is way to much for bream, whiting ect,but perfect for jewfish, rays, sharks ect. I have spooled mine with a fair wack of braid and quite a bit of mono backing. if you just want to target whiting, breams ect, 20 lbs mono would be what id be going, maybe 20 lbs braid, and yes absolutely chuck a lot of backing on. id say 200-300m of braid would be good. Ive also had great sucess on my royobi reel with 15lbs mono, can't lob big sinkers but it works for what i want. all depends on your target species
  11. I have a spinfisher 950ssm with an aerowave 6-12kg, bit heavy but I enjoy it. The spinfisher is tough as nails and i love it. its also very versitile. You could also get away with a 650, 750 or even an 850 ssm if you want to drop the weight down a bit. Personally i don't really take 'nice' reels on the beach, though i do take the slammer. Id be recomending if your on a budget and just want a tough setup, spinfisher ssm or VI depending on buget, could go the live liner as well. On a spinfisher rod or a penn allegince or ally rod, prevail or a shimano aerowave or tiapan. Even the battle 3 is a great beach reel. They would be my 3 top pics for reels. There is the spinfisher ssm beach combo as well, wish is like $130 or something, which will get the job done and theyre not to bad.
  12. If your looking to catch something bigger in general, go a big bait, big sinker, heavy rod, reel and line. Chuck it out and wait for a ray or shovel to come along. They will give you a nice run. I enjoy a nice shovel nose now and again, neasy to handle and pull like a truck. rays not so much, but theyre regularly avaliable and then the fishings slow or just want something big, theyre my go to. Definitely live/ fresh bait aswell can also help. My favorite dead/ frozen bait is tuna, its stupidly oily and leaves a massive oil cloud in the water, ive always had success with it. If in doupt use what is regularly avaible there, thats what they would be used to eating. if in a heavily crabed place, mullet, as this would be regularly avaliable for the fish from people dumping the pots out Dawn and duck/ night, works well for most species. as said before, drop the leader down a bit, it definately helps with getting more bites. good luck
  13. popping out to my local estuary for a couple of hours. will have to be in late june
  14. Im guessing your after GT, so ive bassed the gear off of that. To givea more trageted advice, will need more information. penn slammer 10500 or a 9500. theyre both absolute tanks and perfect to run extremely heavy line. I run a slammer 10500 on a popping rod and love it, though its on the heavy side, it doesnt matter me. if you want shimano or dawia, look at the 14,000 saltist ot saltiga, or the 24,000 saragosa, twin power or stella.
  15. is there much difference between felt and carbon for finesse? Obviously won't be using it for heavy stuff as ive seen what can happen when the felt gets hot. Im guessing you have to grease the felt as well?
  16. Ahh alright thanks. yeah Im mostly worried about something major failing or just a small spring or somehing unique to the reel I guess thats the same with most decent reels, just look after them though. I thought they would have had carbon drags? Im guessing theres aftermarket ones avaliable?
  17. Thanks very much will be focusing more on the ci4+ The F series is pretty old and would be hard to get spare parts im guessing. would prefer a bit newer just so I have access to parts. Will be making sure its in good working order before buying, but thanks.
  18. Alright, will keep an eye out. Im aiming at getting one for $200 or a ci4 for less than $200. Yeah I suspect so, personally I like the look of the phantom hyper better but as you said, never really took off. I personally don't know anyone with them but theyre meant to be alright. It really depends on the price and offers I get will decide between the vanford or the stradic. I don't really have a preference. I preferaby want a 3k size as I need the stopping power for my spot in the harbour but also will use it offshore.
  19. the ci4 or the ci4+ I dont want to go to old as I plan to use these reels for the next few years and will need access to spare parts. Had to unfortunately learn the hard way
  20. Just curious as to what model and year this stradic is. Picked it up for $180. Snagged it up within 1 min of listing lol. This will become the new heavy bream reel, as well as light jigging and as soft plastics. I have a 2500 bream reel to but in some places, it just doesn't have the cranking power.
  21. I use a seak mako 3.9. yeah it works for surf launches but isnt great. for the price and versatility, suits me. if your looking to spend a lot, can't pass the stealth fish pro
  22. Sorry to bring this up again. But I have been looking around at some different reels. I was curious what peoples thoughts are on the phantom hyper and how it compares aggainst a stradic. also look at abu but struggling to find what i want second hand also are the stradic ci4 or the newer ones better? like for the same second hand price (usually) not sure which to take Chasing a 3000 size.
  23. green / moldy stone fish 🤣 in all seriuosness, there any relation to the stone fish? they look to be very simillar and possibly in the same family
  24. I fixed a middle join on one of my rods by first sanding down all the excess glue then smoothing it out then covering with 2 part epoxy, then tightly binding thread around it then left it to dry and then sanded it smooth them painted. Holding well enough, though I wouldn't be putting excessive weight on it.
