  1. well, that might explain a bit. if you find a few crank baits inside that shoot me a message 🤣 but congrats thats an awsome jewfish, especially from berowera. knew they were there, but very rare.
  2. 10ft or so, basically what ever decent size😁 Yeah that's one of the supposed advantages of mono. As the shark drags it across the current, puts more hurt on them. That's what I was thinking about roller rods but lots of people are using them for shark soooooo maybe?? I might go down to a tackle Shop, put it on a roller rod and get someone to go for a bit of a run, then do the same with normal guide rod, see if anything happens. Still trying to wrap my head around this hollow core stuff, how does a bit of dental floss hold it lol. Joining multiple lines? The new setup has hollow core braid to mono topshot if that's what your referring to.
  3. Yeah I'll definitely be in using a harness though. The new setup just arrived, so now I have a mono setup and a braid. So I'll see what happens
  4. yeah mullet is alright, prefer yakkas or fresh squid though. poddies are great for certian things, theyre supposidly alright for jewfish. in regards to your line breaking, what reel are you using (how much line capacity), how old is your 50 lbs leader (is it off?), what knot are you using? if it keeps happening get some nylon 100lbs wire, crimped, 8/0 circle, slab of mullet. my experince with rays is they just go screaming off, absolute nucense, sharks take a bit of a more slower, controlled, even run, just head down and pull. Sometimes, rays stick themselves to the bottom and won't come up, just keep the pressure on them, eventually they will give in.
  5. Wouldn't be putting a live tailor off the beach unless you got your harness and 80w ready 😁 Apparently you bridle the live tailor through the nose with that particular thread, you can also prin them just under the fin on the back. I'd say chunks of fresh tailor would be better than live unless your ready to get some serious by catch
  6. Thanks, hopefully I can live up to what the reels old owner managed of 12ft hammer heads but we will see.
  7. What rod should I get for a tiagara 50w LRS. Will be used for landbased sharks fighting out of a harness running heavy drag. So must be a 37 kg rod. Looking at a Penn carnage or a backbone elite, don't want to brake the bank but I guess it's am expansive reel so probably should get a decent rod. Just looking for some input and some ideas on rods thanks.

    Salt away

Apparently that salty captain stuff is good for that. It has this like sea would bottle that you just spray all over

  10. yeah it is the older one, but the handle can be changed apparently, ill probably end up doing it anyway. if your after some game reels the guy im buying from his mate is selling a acurate 130w fully spooled for 1k, perfect condition, also jump on gumtree, theres a few internations for pretty cheap. had a bit of reesearch while the dog was having a panic attack last night, apparently the drag will be like my penn, goes from free spool and increses very slowly and then at strike be very heavy. yeah definately looking foward, thanks again. Ive been up your way quite a few times picking up crap i keep buying 🤣
  11. Yeah only got a couple of scratches on the left side. ahh its the one that has the true free spool isnt it? worst comes to worst theres a guy who wasnts to drop the size of his international 80w to a 50w so I could trade for it with the tiagara haha You usig braid backing? usually only have 500m of 80lbs mono on an 50w thanks though
  12. Hey guys, I was in the market for a second big game reel when I was offered a tiagara 50w LRS for &450, fully spooled with 80lbs hollow core. Is this a good buy? Is it worth the money? This will become my second big shark reel. Also what does the LRS mean?
  13. If someone could check my caculations for how much topshot i need that would be great. Here are the numbers: Spool: braid: 2272/0.39, 1961/ 0.49, 1678/0.51 (ive rounded to 0.50 as this is the will give me some wriggle room) (all in yards) Mono: 815/0.71 (yards) Line diameter: solid core braid: 1500M/1640yards - 0.48mm hollow core braid: 100Meter/109yards 0.50mm mono top shot: 1.40 - unknown length - 150 lbs here were my caculations theyre rough though: 1961 - 1750 = 211 815 X 0.3 = 244.5 815 - 244.5 = 570 - full spool of 150 lbs mono (211 / 1961) X 100 = 10.76% left of space on spool 10.76% X 570 = 633.6 - 570 = 63.6 yards. is thiscorrect? Also is it possible to splice 80 lbs braid to 150 lbs mono?
  14. Im planning on gettng 80lbs ashconfish solid core 1.5km then splice it to ashconfish 80lbs hollow core 100m then splicing that to 250 lbs topshot.
  15. Yeah it's pretty scary when you start getting dragged, I've been dragged down a beach by a big shark. Would have thought braid is easier to cut though as it's thinker and a lot less abrasion resistant
  16. yeah looking at harnesses at the moment. Thanks for the tip with the rollered rods, didn't cross my mind. I was also told fully rollered is more for mono as well. what im planning now is getting 1.5 km or so of solid 80lbs braid then ill splice it to 300m of hollow for 80lbs to 250 lbs leader. im buying a second spool so I can keep my current 50lbs mono for other applications hence saving me buying a whole new reel
  17. Just for example what these guys are using: 130lbs custom rod with a duel reel penn senator 16/0 with 200 lbs mono on custom roller rods accurate 130w with 200lbs hollow core so Im probably on the very light side lol.
  18. taking it to a mates work for him to spool it 😂
  19. alright so i guess I should go the 1.5km 100 lbs braid. Ill just buy a spare spool for the squall so depending on what im doing I can swap to either mono or braid.
  20. There's a few nice gutters on fingal beach out to the left as your going down the ramp. Chuck on a surf rig with long shank hooks and fish the up coming tide. You will see the locals out in full force Pipis and nippers ECT are the go to bait. You get whiting flathead dart bream Jew fish and sharks
  21. I'm down on line a bit on my squall 50 vsw and was wanting to target some bigger sharks with it hence I started doing some research and asking around. the general feed back I got from the shark fishing specific group im in all said get 1km of 100 lbs braid and 250lbs topshot and I'll be good, but I was thinking that would only take up about 60% of the spool hence I was going to spool 1.5km of 100lbs braid to 250 lbs topshot. At the moment I'm running 24kg mono so is this change a good idea of just a waste of money and time. Also I'm planning on keeping my mono on a big spool in case I want to change over at a later time, I'm looking at getting a second squall if one comes along at the right price (I unfortunately missed one) and spool that with the 24kg mono. My next think is, fully rollered rod or standard and what weight class 24kg or 37kg? Finally the braid I was recommended is called ashconfish so if anyone knows mich about it please let me know, it's got great reviews and the people on the shark group are using it so yeah hopefully alright.
  22. When shark fishing off a beach with big overheads the usual method for getting the bait out to where the sharks are behind the breakers is using a kayak. Sorry for the confusion
  23. Awesome so no need to kayak baits out aye?
  24. Sweet, sounds great. Thanks. Is that a stretch of sand or is it rocks along there?
