  1. Any News on this? I'm looking to get a license for VHF. Bear
  2. I've done a fair bit of squidding and bought a purpose built rod for the task. Like most fishing people have different ideas of what works. A soft action squid rod is different from your blackfish rod. Mine casts a jig very well and the action of the jig is good based on my take home numbers lol. Since we are generally hooking squid in the tentacles they are soft. A big squid though strong is not a fish and at least for me the squid rod handles those much better and does not rip off as many tentacles. The Japanese take egging to an art form and predominantly they use purpose built egging rods. In Australia it wasn't all that long ago that squid were only thought of as bait, not a target species. Like any fishing you can catch a lot on a general purpose rod and reel, but if you to maximize your target species catch you get purpose built gear.
  3. Fab Would you reccomend the Wilson or Alvey pump especially since Alvey is sinking??? I need to replace mine from a shop off brand that is rusted out. Bear
  4. If your display is showing 1 to 40 for channels then you are in car CB mode if your display is showing 68 to 98 then it is in Marine mode. If I remember right you turn on the radio holding the priority button to change between the 2. 68 Commercial, ship-shore-ship 72 Professional Shipping 82 Professional Shipping 86 Secondary distress and safety 88 Primary distress and safety 90 Domestic ship-shore-ship 91 Domestic ship-shore-ship 94 Club events, ship-shore-ship 96 Ship to ship 98 Rescue organisations Don't transmit without an antenna it could do damage to the radio. Bear
  5. Castle Hill store have them in Stock I saw one 3 days ago. I can't remember the rating but I did look at one there. Campbelltown shop had them as well as I bought one there last year. Bear
  6. I assume you are meaning VHF not UHF. Marine VHF is between 150 mhz and 162 mhz. Australian CB UHF is between 476 mhz and 477 mhz. Receive wise you may not see much of a difference as radio reception on varying length antennas is not detrimental to your radio,, HOWEVER transmitting into a non resonant antenna is hugely detrimental. If you transmit into a UHF antenna with a VHF radio on 25 watts unless there is some sort of protection fold back unit in the radio your finals are damaged and likely not working. You would not notice it because your receive function will still work. You will be able to transmit,, well it will look like you are but only milliwatts will come out. You don't need the dealer's antenna but you do need a marine VHF not Air VHF and not Amateur (Ham) VHF no matter if they all use the same standard screw in base. Bear
  7. Gday all I'm looking for VHF radio advice. Is anyone using a radio they find really good or bad? Mostly for use around Sydney Cheers Bear
  8. There is REBUILT and there is REFRESHED. From my understanding REBUILT = with a new powerhead and pistons REFURBISHED = honed cyclinders and new rings Not sure about the rebuilt but depending on who did it and cost it could be ok. I would not go near a refurbished unless it was almost a giveaway Bear
  9. Tash , Any chance you have any pics of the fish when it was caught and still alive? My cousin is a taxidermist and often says fish are difficult. From memory saltwater fish are entirely done with synthetic materials and painted to look similar to the original fish. I believe A mold of the fresh fish is made and then cast in polyester resin that's been mixed with fiberglass. The taxidermist then paints the mount from photographs of the fish.
  10. Some consideration to markings must be given that we don't know the taxidermist and how close to original the colouring is. That said it certainly looks like some sort of cod to me
  11. Yes Rick,, key word is WAS I fixed it already
  12. Hi Jeff I got a 1995 Haines Hunter 520sf Bear
  13. Looking for advice on replacing rollers on my trailer. Are these just the end cap retainers that have rusted off? I'm seeing a huge price difference for wobble rollers on ebay from 6 dollars each to over 100. Bear
  14. Just make sure the tyre is load rated for your application. Most are not. If it is a tinny you probably don't have to worry though look at the plate on your trailer to see what rim and axle load ratings it states. IE my trailer states 1500kg single axle. That means whatever tyre I get must be at least rated to 750kilos or Load Index (LI) of 98 to be legal and covered by insurance. I have 13" rims myself and finding it hard to source 98+ LI tyres.
  15. I have a fly rod by St Croix. Very well made. They are worth the money in my mind
  16. John I imagine with a nice boat like you have, you will find someone for sure.
  17. I looked at this boat today. There is a gouge about 8cm long that took off the gelcoat down to the fiberglass and another 20cm or so of scratch. The owner said it doesn't leak and it happened last weekend when he bumped his trailer. I see some quick fix type kits avail online to fill things like this but then again I've seen some videos of boat repairs which were more involved. I'm sure some of you have done similar unfortunately. I'm curious how you repaired and at what sort of cost? I haven't purchased this boat but it in all other ways looks to be the one,, Bear
  18. LOL Fab Yes I'm still looking mate. I went away on holidays for a while so stopped then but,, I'm back. Not looking for the perfect boat just a fair boat for a fair price that is going to get us out fishing Bear
  19. It doesn't look like Gav has been on much since making this post but I'm also interested in this boat.
  20. I'm asking this specifically regarding a Savage 480 Osprey,, but in reality it could just about be applied to any Aluminum boat. When looking at older Aluminum boats say the 1970's 80's and I suppose 90's are there things to specifically look out for? I hear about corosion from sinkers, hooks and the like floundering around in the hull. I find it hard to believe after 30 years or so that no sinkers or hooks are under the floor now. Is this a real problem? Other than pulling the floor and vaccuming or rolling the hull over is there anything that can be done? Bear
  21. I do not know what is stocked at warragamba but I know my trout. Did you keep it or release it? Did it have white lips or black? Where there any spots on the tail? My guess would either be Rainbow or Brown Trout. I'm leaning to Brown without being able to see the mouth or tail properly. Bear
