  1. welldone mate. Stingray looks placid but when disturbed they can be scary. I went diving and when returning to shore, I was busy looking straight down looking at little critters. When I looked up, this bullray size of a car bonnet was about a metre from my face and it had the striking pose with the tail up aiming at me! I nearly shit my pants! Whats more terrifying was the water probably a metre deep and 5 metres from the shore so totally caught me by surprise. So yeah becareful of the rays
  2. try Greenwich wharf and surroundings. pretty popular place for kingies
  3. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/01/watching-this-guy-make-a-shrimp-lure-from-a-straw-is-very-relaxing/ gonna make one today lol
  4. cameldownunder, which tank you want a pic of got 4, though not for yakka. I did setup my friend with a simple 4 foot tank for livies for the same reason as you. With livie tank, it's quite simple and cheap to setup. I got all secondhand stuff and it cost me roughly $200 for the setup. He has poddies, yakkas, cuttlefish, squid (though squid failed as it kept biting off the fish head lol. For simplicity, get one of the all in one setup (one with filter on top) and an air pump (as cephalopods require lots of oxygen) and some live rocks. cycle for a month and your good to go. Infact if you live near blacktown, I have a perfect setup sitting in my backyard which will work better then my mates (as I was going to set it up for myself but couldn't be bothered setting it up lol). If you need more info, pm me. cheers, mark
  5. sure I know they grow big as I played with the monsters when I dive. They are pretty slow grower in tank and when it gets too big, there are plenty of huge aquarium owners I can donate to. Eg my mate aka lucky bastard with a 7metre wall tank with school sharks! Oh don't worry I'm an expert aquarist
  6. I've got a predator aquarium and been looking for Pj baby or similar small shark. I know you can buy them from aquariums time to time but I don't have a spare kidney to sell for it Any fisho caught a small one recently (below 30cm??) and if so where so I can spare my kidney lol. Cheers, Mark
  7. ko76, rosevilles middle harbour so it's ok. Though I just checked fisheries and found this to be stupid and ridiculous rule. Can someone clarifiy this? Sydney Harbour - Intertidal Protected Areas All species of cunjevoi (Pyura spp.) and invertebrates, except abalone, eastern rocklobster (Jasus verreauxi) and southern rocklobster (Jasus edwardsii Inverterbates are anything without backbone so things like squid is part of it. So does this mean no squidding??? kinda sounds like bullshit to me.
  8. im a fisho, spearfisher, diver and aquarist so mixing all sorts of marine hobby. I personally would love to catch a groper for fun as they would give my skills some thrashing lol. I've dived and love feeding urchins to gropers. They are puppy dogs of ocean. Some of them would go between my legs and I would kinda ride it coolest fish but also too friendly thus spearfishing them is a nono. However those who haven't swam with them would just think it's a great meal (is it??) I'm not against people fishing for gropers but I don't help them either. Though I would prefer people release the fish. Once people interact with the fish like divers do, it's very difficult to imagine it as dinner. I mean would u eat your puppy dog?? spearing or just line fishing... either way certain fish should be given protective rights.
  9. looks very similar but these are kinda red in colour and caught in the ocean.
  10. suxs but imo not everyone knows the law so first time offenders should be given a scare and education. however, repeat offenders should be get heavy penalty. Banning from fishing?? I heard a story that an abalone poacher was followed to his home and got busted by fisheries. I think as a fellow fishermen, it's better we just have a small conversation with the culprit and try to convince them it's unethical rather saying it's illegal. I'm sure most of us have broken the law, I've used undersized tailor as live bait without know that it's illegal (thought it was ok as I'm not taking it home for a feed). After talking to few other fishos I've found out it's not allowed, plus I never caught anything with it so I don't do it anymore. If more fishos do the right thing then hopefully others will follow. I don't suggest you take photos as you don't know how they react, just talk to them. I normally just have a chitchat and once they warm up to me, I then tell them how I got busted for undersize fish etc (lie) and how it can happen to them.... this generally works as most say they didn't know and won't do it again. Not sure if they will offend again but I know I've done the right thing to educate the fisho in the nicest way possible dead or not, it's not illegal as they cannot prove that this person caught it and kept it. They can just lie and say someone else put it there without knowing.
  11. well monkfish looks uglier but they tastes pretty good imo it's unique looking creature and just makes me wonder what other strange shit lives in the ocean exciting lol
  12. not sure the scientific name but I call them long arm shrimp as well as it has a long arm! lol they are harmless scavengers, the long claw has virtually no strength, it's just for shows u got my number predator see u tomorrow.
  13. Kirribilli wharf is good squidding
  14. bit old but it's a decorator crab. had few in my tank
  15. PRED-ATOR I didn't get the muddy but did manage to get few prawns, so if u like come get it
  16. at night if you shine a light on the water, if the froggys around you will hear the croaking.
  17. seasponge, thanks for the link, but with my cooking skills, I'll ruin the crab so I bought a chili muddy in a bottle from an Asian groceries and it is sitting in my cupboard waiting to be used (and hopefully very soon) lol
  18. predator I'll let you know when I get some nice looking shrimps btw it's my third time catching muddies at Roseville. all similar size but the one in the picture had the biggest claws so far, hope next trip to Roseville will beat that record oh and next muddy will turn in to chilli mud crab just like seasponge
  19. I caught the frogfish and kept it in my tank for a while, they really do make croaking sound just like a frog! nice croc
  20. damn, all I could do was boil my muddy in water. Your chili muddy looks much better than mine congrats it's an awesome reward from the sea.
  21. Went to Roseville to collect bait and to my surprise there was a huge muddy just sitting few centimetres of water. Thought about grabbing with my hand but those huge claws made me run to my car to get my net! Result Bloody good feed
  22. Stupid fisheries and its complicated rules. How do they expect fishermen to follow the rules if we simply can't understand it! Half of us thinks it's ok and other half doesn't, even after reading the rules! lol port hacking - Any species of "FISH" Any method involving the use of the following: (a) a hoop or lift net, ( a hand-hauled prawn net, © a crab trap, (d) a lobster trap, (e) a push or scissors net (prawns). Ok so yes u can use prawning or similar nets in hacking as prawns aren't fish! also u can keep any fish caught whilst prawning as long as it's not undersize or over bag limit. Infact based on above, use can use all kinds of nets not listed in Prohibited form of fishing as long as you are NOT targeting fish! lol dynabolt scoop net is landing net. oh I didn't know what a scoop net was as well! lol
  23. I have this blue swimmer looking crab in my fish tank. If I put stinky food (prawns, pillies), within a second the crab will come out of the hiding and will frantically look and eat the food. If I put pellets, there's virtually no reaction. (though it does eat it if it finds it). So in my opinion, crabs have amazing smelling receptor. Also I have watch a documentary about crab catchers and they tested 2 different fish as baits. One was staple bait Pollack and other was salmon. Salmon bait trap virtually came up empty while Pollack was full of crabs. IMO stinky bait will catch more crabs
  24. http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/01/05/15/16/swimmers-at-bondi-beach-ordered-from-the-water-after-shark-sighting Might have to go visit bondi for fishing http://9news.static9.net.au/~/media/images/2015/january/05/150105_raw_bondishark6.ashx?w=603
