  1. Hi, My mates and I have been fishing on the boat but lately due to timing issue, we have not been able to launch the boat. We live in forestville and do tradie work and generally finish around noon so we decided to buy a beach rod combo and thinking of hitting the beach as we often work in northern beachs area. As we are relatively new to beach fishing we would like to get some raider tips We have few questions, First is the time. Is it worth fishing around noon? Has anyone tried fishing during the day and caught many fish? If it similar to rock fishing, then day time isn't the best... Second is location, we looked at Narabeen to Deewhy and it didn't look promising. (mind you, as I check now, it was low tide at half metre!) Any northern beach would be ok. We aren't targeting any specific fish but salmon, tailors are good fun Well I like flounders and in the past I use to catch them from North curl curl rock pools (but getting dranched!), would I be able to catch these from off the beach? Anyway thanks in advance and looking forward to your replies. Mark
  2. wow amazing fish. just love those dolley they are the pugs from sea top stuff.
  3. ok now i'm more educated, i feel the pain and hateful of those who keep undersized fishl. however when i was younger, i didn't know so i kept all the fish (smaller ones to eat). i think before coming down hard on these people, we need to provide better education and awareness. i know i don't like to stereotype however most foreigners (migrants) have this problem of keeping everything they catch... well my parents did so i learnt from them. you gotta remember, in foreign countries catching tiny fish is a big deal and even though we call it undersize, compared to what we used to catch, it's massive! i think tackleshop owners should ethically provide genuine education to newbies/foreigners about the needs to release undersized fish for conservate reasons rather then the fear of fines. (it's exciting to break the rules! lol). my 2cents
  4. A.dawg THAT IS ONE MASSIVE CALAMARI!!!! Arrows can get to massive size (like giant squid) but for calamari.... welldone
  5. thanks for removing the tackle theives from the sea those slimys are quite a good fun on a light tackle.
  6. is that a catfish at the top left in the last picture? it like one of those where's wally, just camourflaging amongst the reds
  7. hmmm whats the big deal about gropers? are they strong fighters? surely they can't fight harder than a kingy of same size?
  8. well done, we used to fish for carps when i was in highschool at the same spot. we didn't catch many back then but we did enjoy a cup noodle (thats all we could afford at that time!)
  9. Pike and they smell of good old ammonia so not the best fish to keep it in a bucket with the catch of the day
  10. well i saw a news flash something about big squids are being caught due to warm weather or something... is this in sydney? if so where do i go to catch these big buggers
  11. they are arrows right? arrows hang in massive schools so when they are about, its crazy fun! i remember when i was fishing for slimys at tathra warf and these things came by. i didn't even have to change the rigs, as when the slimy was on the hook these squids will latch on to the slimy and wouldn't let go even though the warf is like 3metre off the water!! i caught a bucketful this way! lol anyway fantastic catch champ, its salt and pepper squid for the next few months. i'm insanely jealous
  12. hope they recover fully. on another note, there are just too many crashes lately it just shows that majority of the people shouldn't be flying. just because you can get a license to fly doesn't mean you should fly. plane isn't a car!
  13. hmmm in my oppinion, salt and pepper squid is much better tasting than any jewie ps i am so envious of you guys. welldone pps does anyone know a killer salt and pepper squid recipe?
  14. i'd love to see this video. 4.5m white shark in northern beach? is it even possible~!!!!!!! i have never heard of white sharkes in sydney. PS do they ever attack a 3-4metre boat? if so I will never go on a small boat again never! PPS Walrus welldone mate. You're a hero.
  15. Hello everyone, I just like to share the unbelievable experience I had with a mate of mine yesterday. Most of the raiders who went out yesterday morning (5am for us) would have noticed the extremely heavy fog. This fog reduced the visibility to 10-20metres max, yet I couldn't believe how fast other boats were travelling through zero visibility Anyway getting back to Ripleys, well would you believe me if I told you I caught a 55cm yellowtail kingfish on on this!! Well let me elaborate, the fog cleared up around 8am, but not many quality fish (as we were sheltered in a spot out of danger). Though we stayed their till around 10am as all we can see is bunch of boats moving around constantly (we assume they are moving from spot to spot as theres no fish). We moved to catch some yakkas and ended up with 1 and few small travellys. It was around 11am when we decided to catch the reall yellow tail, so instead of heading out, we headed back towards the roseville and ended moaring maybe a 1km past the spit bridge. We sent down a yakka and a travelly and the waiting game began. After 5minutes I got bored! lol I wanted to complain to my captain "why are we here in this Sh1thole when there are open water!!!!" Anyway I got bored so I put a tiny bit of prawn (litterally half the size of my pinky fingernail) on the yakka hook to catch those pesky snappers (to pass time). 10minutes later no action and still bored as hell Then all of a sudden my yakka rod buckled and it was peeling line like theres no tomorrow~!!! I was like did I catch a bottom? but we are moared!!! I picked up the rod and I knew it was something big. I am yelling at my captain to bring up the other lines but he didn't! so I yelled again which made him do it My captain thought I had no chance! Kingy on a yakka tackle? Not a chance. Little did he realise that I was prepaired for something like this, so my yakka tackle isn't not the common 5pound lines I use 30pound braid and 20pound mono and I do my knots and vigorously check to make sure the knot won't fail. (Those who fished off cliftons garden will understand why I use such tackle). Halfway through I realised... hmm lines all good but what about the hook! surely that little hook can't be strong enough or big enough to hook the kingfish properly! Few minutes past, and the drag singing started to quiet down a bit and finally I landed my first NON legal kingy A yakka hook with a tiny bit of prawn got the 55cm kingy instead of two other rods with a live bait. My captain with my fish, thanks Sam for an awesome day out. ps I think I need to go get the 30million dollar lotto what do you think pps Late merry christmas and happy new year fellow raiders.

    Squid

two places, first is my fav.its the southern end of the beach with the rock pool. just next too it theres bunch of rocks (not dangerous at all, apart from maybe getting your feet wet if your unlucky). you can jig (bigger ones do best as these calamaris are as big as your forarm). or you can float a yellowtail with the squid jig hooks and you will definitely get a big one . i tend to do both, leave one floating and jig as well. most of the time i get double hookups . good idea with float is when you can see the pull, throw a jig near it and your guarenteed a second squid

    palm beach has heaps.
  18. when i used to goto kingswood uni, me and my mates would often go fishing at the weir. the best place is the middle of weir, and what i found bass tend to not bite during the day, an hour or two before sunset is the best. u can use alot of lures but the best method for me was nightcrawler. me and 3 other mates caught like 20 of them in an hour. We took 5, 4 of them were huge (much bigger than any bream i have ever caught and I have caught some thumpers) and the other one was about 20-25cm. my hungarian mate took it home in a bucket a live and when he got home there were only 4 left! it turns out those 4 got pretty hungry and it ate the smaller 5th! lol mean little buggers they are. oh my mate said it tasted great. ahh this brings back memories
  19. has there every been an incident where a whale would flip a boat? just very curious
  20. slimys on a light tackle is awesome fun they fight pretty hard and they are awesome for bait.
  21. koreans love big occies very simple cooking method. first you lots of rock salts and rub the crap out of them. It will remove all the slimy stuff on the exterior. then you have to clean them by removing the stuff inside the head (if you want you can also chop off the head as we tend to only eat the legs) now throw the beast in the boiling water (with bit of salt) for about an hour. take it out and cool it. now slice up the legs in to thin slices and get your wasabi or korean chilli sauce. its kind like sashimi but cooked you don 't usually eat this for the taste but the texture. Since its rubbery and chewy its quite fun to eat. My folks say you would eat this not for the taste of the occy but the taste of the chilli sauce.
  22. omg that made me laugh. I was seriously expecting something like "stray blackdog terrorising the area!!!". well i guess it did terrorise, terrorised the loaf of bred! lol I could just imagine, having a good fishing session, then all of a sudden no bait! lol what can you do! thanks for the laugh.
  23. awesome catch dude, those maks are fighters and screamers dude are you in qld or nsw? anyway congrats on a fine catch, fingerscrossed your roof will be delayed again
