  1. VDO make temp sensors that have an output for your guage and one switch output. If you swap the correct sendor for your current sendor you can then add a buzzer using the other terminal to activate. What engines do you have in your bertram 25 as we also have a 25 flybridge with twin 165's. A few months ago we threw a fan belt and nearly cooked an engine. As yet I havent dont this mod myself but need to.
  2. In April we upgraded from our 17ft trailer boat to a 1980 Bertram 25 and yes it needed work. After the planned inital costs of slipping and Antifoul there were a few unexpected issues in the first week. Listed are the parts only costs Trim Hoses $140 Prop Shaft Seals $150 Propellors $600 Battery Cabeling $100 Alternator $290 Storm Cover $550 Tune up parts $95 Risers due soon $600 And thats to name the obvious ones We purchased our Bertram 25 with 2, 30 year old mercruiser 165's knowing that they would need repairs as when you leave metal in salt water for 30 years things break. I have no oncerns fixing the engines as those years training to be a Mechanic are paying off. If I were not able to fix a lot of the issues myself I would see my marine Mechanic driving a new car by now. If I had the cash I would buy a Shaft drive diesel however if you are prepared for what you are getting into then i see no issues. The legs are often referred to as Disprin's because they disolve in water. When you hunt around you can save money on parts but when its on the slips and you need a part you are just happy to get it quickly. If you buy a boat with old mercruisers PM me or Fisherboy and we can share problems. I have also been dont by a boat with 470 engines they are just trouble. Good luck with boat hunting
  3. This morning we set off dragging lures out of Botany Bay. As we passed the heads we saw many whales breaching and having a great time. We pulled the lures in and watched from a distance. After 1/2 and hour we tried bottom bashing off north Botany Head. After 15 Mins my Wife hooks a fish and thats when it all began. As the fish came towards the surface we could see other Colours in the water, we hoped it was a King fish with his friends following. Then the colours in the water appeared too large for a King fish and we became concerned that it could be a shark. These colurs appeared from under the boat moving out to the port side. My wife quickly wound in the mongrel leather jacket saving it from what we believed to be a shark. The size of the Colours grew and we all took a step back from the side in case what we thought to be a shark saw us as snack. Seconds later the surface parted as the first of 2 whales breached less than 10 ft from the boat. With excitment and concern mixed togather it was all over as they moved on. It takes time to describe what took less than 30 seconds to occurr leaving all on board wondering if the whales were just playing games with the humans. This prompts the question, Do whales hit boats or do boats it whales. Fisherdad, Melissa and Fisherboy.
  4. First and most important, are you sure its 2 stroke oil residue and not Gearbox oil. Check its not gearbox oil, its unlikely but worthy of being sure, Check it. If its 2 stroke residue you could try a better brand of oil that will burn off, Some cheap oils dont burn well and you can get residue. Residue is not a big issue, so dont worry. Good luck
  5. Woolies now sell a McCormicks Salt and pepper Squid packet Mix. its not as good as your recipe but its easy and tastes great 1 add sachet and squid rings or pieces into a plastic bag. 2 Shake and remove squid 3 Cook in Frypan or deep fry. 4 Eat Simple and great.
  6. We purchased our Southwind SR17 Half Cabin 18 months ago and its been great. The wife and I have spent several nights on our Southwing but were looking for a bit more room (Friends and Kids) We have had a look at a couple of Betram 25 Flybridge cruisers and now its time to get serious about what we are looking for. Here are my questions. 1. How noisy are the engines while running. 2. How do the Salt water cooled 6 cyl and v8 versions cope with corosion. Are there Diesel versions. 3. Are there any issues to look out for. 4. Are there any other similar boats worth looking at Fisherdad (David)

  8. We are heading down to Jarvis Bay in early January chasing some good fish and a bit of R&R. There is a Ramp at Myola that runs into the Creek/River that enters Jarvis Bay at Huskisson. I remember reading a report about the entrance into JB but cant find it. Has anyone used the Ramp and does anyone know what the entrance to the bay is like. Thanks Fisherdad
  9. I am no fisherman based on my catch record but know the river reasonably well. 1 Make sure of your Markers as comming down river from Deepwater Motor Boat Club you MUST Zig Zag through them or you WILL find he rocks. 2 Your younger kids will love the sand flats at low tide at the Moons (Just upstream of Lugarno). You will see lots of fisherman in the deep channel. (Use your markers again) We have has fair success drifting between the boats at Lugarno Flower Power is a reasonable ramp Como Marina serves great coffee
  10. Another Recipe for the Pie Warmer Garlic Bread Purchase Garlic Bread from Woolies and rewrap so it fits in the little oven, 20 mins later, Great
  11. You will need a deep cycle battery, Car batteries dont handle being sent flat and then recharged. Purchase a good battery charger so you get a full charge into the battery as some battery charges wont fully charge the battery. I have attached a couple of websites of manufacturers so you can get some information and work out what you need. Neither of these companies sell retail as it would be wrong of me to suggest a supplier as the site sponsors like Huey will have what you need. http://www.projecta.com.au/ http://www.ctek.com.au/CA2571B7001714EB/pa...argers~&3=~ Regards David
  12. If you download Google Earth you can enter the 2 marks you are considering, they will show were they are and then you can use the measuring tool for distance calculation. I use it to work out how far a fishing point is off shore.
  13. 4 options and key areas for heat loss and feeling Cold 1 Keep the head warm with a Beanie (You loose lots of heat through your head) 2 Keep the Feet warm with loose fitting boots (Tight shoes slows circulation) 3 Keep out of the wind with either covers or long jacket( Wind Chill will make you cold or worse) 4 The final option is to cuddle up in the cabin for the night with your fishing parther (Not your Buddy but your wife etc ) My choice is #4
  14. Southwind SR17 Yamaha 115HP 2 Stroke WOT 32 Knots Cruise 20 Knots Planes at 14 Knots Rough Water 8 Knots Work on an average fuel consumption if 1 Litre per Km and use Google Earth to work out distances from ramp to fishing point plus a saftey factor of lots.
  15. With the boat on you would not be able to open the Tail gate anyway. Then you can get a longer tow ball ie spaced up. Problem is it will get forgotten and you will dent the tail gate. is it just a 6" jockey wheel if its a 10" you can fit a 6". Sorry no real solution
  16. I have Duals with an Isolator switch as well. If you are talking using a battery charger, In most cases batteries need to be dissconnected before charging. There are charges available where dissconnetion is not needed. Refer instructions. What I do as each time I go out i isolate the battery I used last, leaving the battery that i used last time as backup. This way I am starting the boat at the ramp with the flattest battery. The first time it gives be trouble I may charge it but if its too old or gives trouble a second time, its gone. Good batteries give less problems David
  17. What a GREAT day. Hit the water before Dawn and sheaded straight out to Osborne Shoal. As we approached the Mouth their was a Thunderstorm lurking to the NE and it just evaporated. First Stop Osborne Shoal, Lines in the water and sall flattie, followed my 10 or more small flatties. Moved around a bit even tried Boomerang Reef, 10 seconds in the water and our luck had changed, Leather jackets. This is when we found about the exclusion Zone and even though the Police Boat that passed didnt ask us to move on it we wer over the Leather Jackets. Headed in close and my mate started to turn green so we went in. We decided to Drift in on the incomming tide from the Cardnial market near Bundeena 15 seconds flat Good Flounder Next cast, Small Flattie , Small Flattie, Small Flattie all the way to Lilly Pilly Moved and ancored up in the middle of the deep at Lily Pilly. Couple of small Bream and then BANG. I dont know what it was but it took the squid and busted be off all in one hit. (Nearly wooped myself) The next few hours saw our sun tan improve. End result was 2 fish for my mate. I could not believe how great the Day on Hacking was all it needed was bigger fish. Work Tomorrow It can rain David
  18. We hit the water at Dawn and were out at Osborne Shoal soon after. The Wife rang and told us about the Exclusion Zone. About the same tine the Air search started mainly to the south. Not 2 Mins later we notices a police Boat approaching at speed expecting to be asked to move on. He took a bit of a look and headed SE. I was surprised that there was no announcement of the Exclusion Zone on Channel 88 We played with the Leather jackets a bit more then headed inside the mate i had taken was turning green and planning to evolve into a Burley Machine. David
  19. I can see how having a Satinless Steel article imbedded in your mouth would cause discomfort and even death through starvation. Its in humaine to leave that type of impact if it can be easily avoided. On a side issue, why so many Humans pretend to be fish and have their Lips, Tongues and faces peirced with Stainless Steel.
  20. Shadda Swell is predicted to be small but its only a prediction We may tru early and then come in Southwind 1/2 cabin with Red Stripe
  21. TUCK (Dont even think about it)
  22. Thanks for the tips. I dont believe Hacking is a Desert but it is either on or off. and Thursday the answer is ?????
  23. There is lots of discussion about Kingfish in Sydney Harbor and Botany. What about Port Hacking for Kingfish. Im going for an early fish with on Thursday and I dont see any point drowning Yakkas or feeding Squid to the fish population of Port Hacking for the sake of it A mate of mine suggested Osborne Shoal Or do I invest in the whiting population
