Big City Kingie Action

Hit the the water at the leisurely time of 7am with my brother Danny and my dad. squidded for a couple of hours at a couple of spot's for six squid...we must have sighted about 100 - they were hanging around in schools, one of about 20, but were timid - mostly just completely ignoring our jigs, probably because the sun was blazing by this time.

The squid biding their time and consoling one another

by 9.30 we were downrigging for kings. the action was slow but steady. Strikes coming like clockwork every 15 minutes.

We kept a couple of littlies for the table and released a couple.

My dad was on strike when a bigger king hit, went for a run and the hooks pulled. we had already lost a couple of squid for no hookup. A while later he got another rat, and thankfully it was back to my strike

I was worried about how i'd go hooked into a big king without my kingie mentor kelvin telling me exactly what to do..haha. Our usual downrigging outfit is a little illsuited for larger kings. the jig-style rod too short and I was wondering how well the little 4500 daiwa capricorn would perform against a good king.

At about midday the rod went off again...

He took five minutes to land, went 90cm and he was fat.

we released this fella.

Soon after another squid was smashed, another big king was on and after a blistering initial run the hooks pulled. after losing a second big'un in one day to hooks pulling i think the 5/0 owner hoodlums are gonna have to be upsized for the next mission...

Nice one, you guys had a great day out on the water, I am sure you've done Kelvin proud. Fantastic release of the 90cm King too.

You have to feel sorry for the squid sometimes, they are amazing things, too bad for them the Kings love them and they are tasty morsals.

Well done on the Kings ,guys

Kelvin, are you taking on any more apprentices?

Cheers

Kurt

I think I have done my bit to spread the word on how to catch kings . You should meet the new masters 445F, Teddy and Danny ( Barrykrocker ) . They all had expert tuition and are now fully qualified on the subject of hoods. Each is a specialist in this field from squidding to downrigging. Even jigging!!!. They know lots of good spots and have upped their tackle to handle the biggest hoodlums!!!

This report gives me so much satisfaction seeing a couple of my "young apprentices" doing good! It was only a matter of time really. Can't wait to get a few tips from these guys as they broaden their knowledge and experience :biggrin2: It is all pretty easy once you know what you are doing!! Cheers Kelvin

Ha ha, you are oh so kind Grasshopper. This is my first full season fishing for Kings and downrigging, and I am coming along ...

Your tuition and guidance has been priceless Kelvin, I am very grateful and appreciate the time you have taken to show me the ropes.

Although others on this forum have not been in as lucky a position as us, I am sure your reports have helped countless people in chasing our Seriola friends.

Cheers.
