Have to agree mate.These people have trouble telling you about current boats let alone old ones.

I want to know more about my transom as it is a weird type of almost pod type not a straight transom.

Yeah I figure you're probably right. Was going to see as someone suggested it to me while back as they had an older Haines and they were actually put in touch with a guy that specialised in that particular hull back in the day.

I want to know about my transom as it is not straight across the back. I have not come across one single transom repair on a transom like mine and I'd like some more info as I want to start ripping into it soon... She's been off the water for close to 2 years.

Looks like you have a late model 5.2 Escort, late 90's -early 00's. I can't remember but towards the end of Savage they were making some FG boats in China probably later than the boat you have . I know for sure they had a 6.5 mt made in China.  That was much later than your boat. 

I can't help you any further other than to say you will get more info contacting one of their ex dealers . Try contacting Huett Marine in Cowan.

Just to add how it all came about, Telwater bought Savage boats (Australia) just like they bought Quintrex, Savage included both Aluminium and Fibreglass boats, they retained the Aluminium range (and improved them) and built them in their QLD Factory along with some other brands, and some that disappeared (the Archer range of plate boats being one) the Savage fibreglass range went offshore and are sold through various dealers. Telwater bought a few brands and just squashed them to eliminate some market competition.

edit.....not too sure how the Telwater business model is now after BRP (Evinrude e-tec) bought part of the company some time ago, and has since ceased outboard production, I "assume" somehow BRP is still partners with Telwater?

Just on the Savage I nearly bought a brand new savage bay cruiser from up your way.I'm yet to see one on the water.

I worked part time for a Savage dealer for ages and the Bay Cruiser is a very popular boat, easy to sell, hardest part was the customer picking a colour, most popular by far was white, then red, black and teal neck and neck.

That should be easy enough, how bad is the rot? Is there enough access to do it from the inside? It's a bit hard to tell from the pictures.

That has been part of the problem Noel, I started to remove the glass from the outside say about a 1/4 of the way and then I was told it shouldn't be done that way, but I've already started and I wouldn't be able to do it from inside anyway unless I somehow cut the top off.

I guess you are sort of committed to doing it from the outside now, doing it from the inside does require cutting the "cap" off and maybe some other bits, but the finished job is so much better. Anyway, just cut it all out and dig the rotten ply or whatever was used out and make up a new transom with whatever material you choose, making extra sure it's "glued" to the inside properly. Finishing the exterior to look right is a challenge, but, seeing as it's fairly small (not a full width) it might be OK. Make sure bungs and motor well drain holes are sealed, that's where the rot starts.

So it is OK to do from the outside if I have to Noel? Also as far as when replacing the board whatever I choose it would then be like any other transom steps I would see on on a YouTube video that someone else has redone their transom? 

 

And good point regarding the bung hole being sealed. My current one wasn't and I believe that's where my problems started.
