saltrix Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 The sun was up by the time we cleared the Spit. Tried our usual trolling around Dobroyd and North Head but no takers. It was pretty calm at North Head As there was not much wind we could not get a good drift but managed a few fish at around 50m between the reefs around DY wide. Caught most of the fish on Hawkesbury prawn from the fish shop and small squid from the bait shop.not as much interest in the usual pilchards. The red Rock Cod was a good size so handled carefully and kept as they are good eating if you avoid a sting, also kept some of the spikeys that were unlikely to survive. The fish were bled and in an ice slurry but there was not much ice left. 10
Larkin Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Good haul of fish! 👍 That’s dinner sorted for a couple of nights!
Yowie Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 A few nice feeds to be had. The larger spikies are edible, small fillets, but care needed with the dorsal spikes due to the venom on the tips. A good sized red rockie.
Pickles Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Some nice eating fish @saltrixRed rock cod are ugly blighters, but excellent eating.
zmk1962 Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Nice catch and the conditions look great. +1 for eating a Rockie of that size. cheers Zoran
Isaac Ct Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Good feed, well done. Nice day out for it. Good quality fish.
bessell1955 Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Hoe do you prepare and cook the Red Rock Cod?

First you remove the head - be careful and avoid the painful spikes. A large part of the fish is the head, which is why you need a decent size to make worthwhile eating. I like them Thai style, but others have previously posted about steaming or in soups. This is how I’d do mine…. https://www.fishraider.com.au/topic/91344-crispy-fried-ocean-perch-thai-style/ cheers Zoran 1
