What were they thinking of.....??

@big Neil sent me a link via FB today which stopped me in my tracks. It was a device intended to help with those extra powerful casts. My first thoughts were are you serious? Then I thought a bit further and came to the conclusion my index finger and a glove (if I'm genuinely concerned) would do just as well. It is not to say it won't work or well for that matter but I wanted to know what they were thinking of when they designed this casting aid. Upon further reflection I realised that over the years I've seen several fishing related inventions which had me stop in my tracks and then had the lightbulb moment that this would potentially be an interesting and fun topic to get others involved in.

What I'm looking for is the fishing product that made you have a What The.... moment. It might actually be a good product that works well but on initial viewing just feels off. The more background you can give the better.

This was the product video: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid02oD9j3Jwc7Lik8zBAJ77v8DvNkNoKoc5ZPEzJ5vkoy4nuksbXfJ58XwMTULkeDv8ql&id=100086646485384

Then for more information see the website: https://knessly.com/collections/frontpage/products/castxtend-pro

Probably my biggest "what the" moment was the dragon fly lily pad lure (aka the hover lure). Someone worked out that bass will hit a dragon fly close to the water so they designed a lure with a floating lily pad through which you pass your fishing line and then you tie on to the dragon fly. Even found the video for it:

Just for a bit more inspiration... I've come across the savage suicide duck lure. Now this is one that I know works but I don't see me chasing kingfish on them.... There is also the Australian equivalent of the budgie lure

First the lure: https://savage-gear.com/products/lures/freshwater-lures/top-water/prop-baits/3d-suicide-duck

Then there is a Youtuber I follow that has had a fair bit of success on these:

Back in the early 80s in magazine advertisements I'd see a hook system which was the equivalent of a bear trap but for fish. They sniffed at the bait and the jaws would snap shut. I tried googling it without success but I did find this self setting spring loaded fishing hook.

For further viewing see:

I watch a fair bit of tv. Indeed it's the very best way for me to have a nap. Advertising has always intrigued me. I understand the need for advertising...people have to sell stuff to get paid. But I often wonder whether anybody is responsible for how much BULL the advertisers can get away with. Miracle "age-reversing" creams that are so good, they give you an additional one FREE, (apart from the additional postage and handling costs). These ads are very cleverly put together...they make outrageous claims using words like may and can, instead of will. All aimed at tricking unsuspecting viewers into purchasing the product.

So what's all this got to do with fishing? We anglers aren't stupid, after all, we can outwit all manner of piscatorial creatures. Advertisers can't pull the wool over our eyes, can they? Nobody is going to convince us that we need super duper tackle to outsmart a dumb fish, are they? Of course not!

That's why I have a special composite rod, a super lightweight, ergonomic reel loaded with 9 strand super smooth braid, and very specially designed invisible leader material. Nobody is going to convince super cynical me that this elaborate bit of bent wire called a spinnerbait looks anything like a fleeing fish when retrieved through the snags... ARE THEY?

Apparently these AND the imitation Australian version "the Budgie" are the best thing since sliced bread for catching Murray Cod. How do I know this? It's in the advertising splurb...

And now Neil, let’s not talk about “Lures”.
It seems that people who have a profile use these, best, must, have, caught all my fish on .. Etc pieces of wonders, as you just previously said The best thing since sliced bread.

But by my reckoning the fish must wise up to them as each year as they keep releasing new models.Bloody smart fish.

Saw these lures at a shop. Never seen anyone using them, I guess they're for cod though?

And we all also know about the other lure we probably shouldn't discuss 😂.

Seen plenty of random rig that include like a water proof lantern and about 10 hoons attaches to it, couldn't find a pic though.

They called them "casting canon" back in the day. More for surf fishing, used alot overseas compared to here. Probably more useful slugging out bigger baits than light stuff.

I bought one for the novelty of it about a decade or so ago. Was about -$5 back then, last I saw some people on fb trying to selling them for 15-20.

A bit of background here. Apparently chasing Carp in the Great Britain is something akin to a religious pilgrimage. The back of my car often resembles a small tackle shop but practioners of carp fishing would add in a trailer of gear to what I have. The gear and techniques they use are specialist and in my eyes over the top. I’ve laughed when seeing photos of carp fishos climbing trees to scope out an area.

On a side note, years ago I met the president of one of the UK angling associations while he was out here on a sabbatical from politics. He genuinely couldn’t understand why Ozzies were not passionate about carp. I responded with many of the issues they cause in our waterways. If you ever get the chance, talk to someone that carp fishes over there as the stories are an eye opener. Hopefully I can convince @Ryan.f to contribute a little more on this.

In amongst the specialist gear they have are remote control bait/burley boats. While probably not actually that silly in practice over there the fact someone has invented these for a genuine market makes me shake my head in wonder.

Now the video:

PS. The carp over there look a bit more spectacular in size. There is even a guy that has combined his love of carp fishing and photography to put out an annual calendar called Carponizer. Here is the instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/carponizer/?hl=en

I know a few Carp anglers in the UK and Derek is dead right saying that they need a trailer for all the gear they take fishing. The theory behind all the gear that they use is to outsmart the Carp. Apparently, the Carp are so intelligent that the angler needs to take a tackle shop full of gear to baffle the Carp into taking their offering. No longer is it satisfactory to just take a few worms from the garden...apparently the Carp know the worms aren't local and steer clear of them. The solution is to take maggots, bread, and boilies in at least 6 different flavours, But wait there's more. These Carp have their own educational system called schools where they learn, from a very early age, how to live to a ripe old age without getting caught by these gullible anglers.

The anglers aren't taking this laying down though. They have super strong, invisible lines, minute hooks, and floats that offer zero resistance when pulled below the water's surface. Coupled with super sensitive bite detectors, lounge chairs with drink holders, and survival kits built in, the anglers of Britain are taking the Carp challenge very seriously. "There is more than British pride at stake here" one of the top anglers is quoted as saying in the Times supplement, CARP WEEKLY.

Rumour has it that the new list of Britain's richest people contains no fewer than 27 tackle shop owners. Royalty beware, they are coming after you.

This roving report was brought to you by big Neil who was lucky to escape the kingdom of the monster Carp before life got too serious.

Ever watched the course fishing tournament in the U.K on tv ? It is like watching paint dry 😂

They should set up Penrith lakes for these type of tournaments and let those Pom fishos pay lots of money to fish there , they would crap their dacks when they see the size of the carp there !

Funny story I heard once was when Rex Hunt and Starlo went to England to film an episode of the show , Starlo got lumbered with the chore of carp fishing and said he saw this guy catch a carp and he was in tears of joy , he was in the water caressing the fish , talking to it and swimming it so it had the best chance of survival - starlo was busy  looking around for a suitable rock to bludgeon it to death 😂

You can get those little boats with an extra compartment thay you put your baited hook in and use the boat to drive the bait out onto the lake , flip a switch and the bait drops out , flip another and it dumps the berley right on top of the bait . I swear some of their fishing trips ( one day trips ) are more like what we would call a camping trip , they set up tents , gas stoves and all sorts of gizmos !

I've heard a similar story about a Polish (I think) guy I talked to once talking about how redfin are loved from where he's from and that they have a legal size also.

I have read about how fish in highly pressured areas adapt over time, I recall their size would decrease over time and that they were very lure shy. I think it's interesting to compare how carp fishing here is not known as difficult while in the UK they consider carp extremely intelligent there.

For all you lure makers, this is my favorite american youtuber for making lures, he's made lures such as a facehugger from the Alien franchise and some other very gnarly swimbaits and divers. He's also made three videos of catching bass on blocks of wood as well.
