Little_Flatty
Watching a few fly tying videos recently made me question the way I have pronounced hook sizes my whole life. How did you pronounce ‘4/0’? Four ‘O’ or four ‘aught’? When I first heard the ‘aught’ pronunciation I thought the fly tyer had a speech impediment, but then I realised it was a thing! Something to do with wire sizes, apparently. Never too young to learn something new! How do you all pronounce it?

XD351
Weirdest use of the aught thing is with a rifle cartridge 30-06( 30cal, released 1906), Americans call it 30-aught 6 but pronounce 1906 as 19 oh 6 as do we. Here it is 30-oh 6. You are probably right there Zoran - aught is naught without the N . I don’t know the origin of the bar oh designation -4/0 ( four bar oh ) surprised it isn’t pronounced four forward slash oh

XD351
It could be worse - hooks could use the same size designations as drill bits ! Metric , inch, letter and number sizes . I’m waiting for someone to put a # in front of the hook size Edited November 2, 2023 by XD351

noelm
Americans have all sorts of funny terminology, some words they officially changed to suit themselves. The common one is Aluminium, all metals ended in “ium” like titanium, but they changed it to Aluminum (pronounced al ooo me num) because they didn’t like to say the ium on the end, even a word like “solder” they say “sodder” why? I have no idea.
XD351
Probably the same reason they drive on the wrong side of the road, use 110v for domestic supply , call petrol gasoline and on and on etc - if you can answer that then you will have solved one of the greatest mysteries of all Now can we pick on the kiwis???? There are some real gems in there
