  1. I use My SP Bream gear off the beach for Salmon down near Tathra, the beach is fairly steep with fairly deep water close in. Just keep casting and moving along the beach. Sometimes they are in a gutter, other times on a sand flat under the white water. High tide seems better , 3 inch Bass Minnows work well in blue, but try other colours too. Flicking the Sp works well. 1/8 th jig head is enough. Hold On !!!!! Howard.
  2. Probably in a museum, as I said , it was a long time ago. There would be better reels around today. But speed is the key. If they can't get a good look, they attack anyway! Howard.
  3. Only one answer to this. 6 to 1 SEASCAPE Major. The 499 Mitchell has the same rate of line retrieve per turn of the handle. But you can spin the Seascape faster, and it does make a difference!!! I proved it on the point at Hat Head with Bonito a while back. Actually a long while back. MEMORIES. Howard.
  4. I was told that the larger displacement of the CV gives it more low down torque, the twin carbie in the nmh gives it smoother idle and acceleration. The cv is more a working motor suited to heavy loads. Howard.
  5. www.oceansunfish.org Well worth a look. Howard.
  6. Take some strips of steak. Fished unweighted, chook pellets with a dash of tuna oil as burley, keep a constant stream going. I won't say any more! Howard.
  7. Well done! I head down around Tathra every winter to catch Salmon on bream gear off the beach, a lot of fun. Broke a rod last year throwing a lure that was too heavy for the rod. So be careful! 3" Bass Minnows on 1/8 head, Perfect. I cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Howard.
  8. If it is a 2 piece, buy a replacement top half for it, otherwise it will never be the same! Howard.
  9. Barbara and I waited till our honeymoon, spent it in a caravan fishing at Hat Head 22 years later were still doing it Howard.
  10. Watson's leaping bonito!
  11. How many of us are heading to Port this weekend? I'm going to have a filck off the Beach. Staying at Flynns Beach. Howard.
  12. Berowra is a top waterway, and not a lot of people fish it. You have done well. Howard.
  13. Baitcaster/ Threadline/ Overhead. they all do the job in there relative sizes, Just a different way of fishing AND dont forget the handline! I chop and change depending on my mood
  14. I have an open tinny and the gps combo units at the time had external aerials, so i didn't bother thinking that I may buy a gps that I can use in the car and boat. Some of the units now have inbuilt aerials, If I were to buy one now thats what I would buy. Any regrets, only that I dot get to use it enough! Howard.
  15. The biggest change you will notice is in the Pixil count, yours may be as low as 128, the good units now run 480. This means a lot more information can be seen on the screen. The second, and some may disagree, is colour. Much easier to read. Screen brightnes is another, I had an eagle 3D I now have a Lowrance 107cdf, the screen is very bright even in direct sunlight. The 3D was good when following a drop off but only worked with fish id, so a lot of valuable information wasn't available. Howard.
  16. You need a runout tide and no Moon. Tuesday the 19 th has a high at 7 30 pm and on moon so you should be good. At Merimbula bridge the tide is 90 minutes late, so it will be a late night! Howard.
  17. Mondo, I broke a Daiwa Procaster X the same as yours in July spinning a metal slice which was too heavy, 30grams. The last 2 years I have travelled down south to fish for Salmon with Bream gear off the beach, I love it. I found Salmon hiding in amoungst the boulders next to the rocks in about a metre of water, SP's were useless as they snagged, but metal slices did the damage. Off the sandy beach bass minnows in blue pearl on an 1/8 round head worked a treat in the white water. The Salmon were cruising up and down the beach, we fished the gutters and holes, but always with white water. There were seals and dolphins around so I think that's why they were under cover or in amongst the boulders. 4 lb is a lot of fun, use an 8 lb leader with a drag of just under 2 lb. Be patient, you can't bully a Salmon on that gear. Howard.
  18. Probably better off to buy a few packets of Beach Worms and keep them in the fridge. Have tried pudding in rivers and lakes, but way be a bit rough in the surf. Howard.
  19. The 4500 is not a small reel, it can handle 10 kg line. It has a maximun drag of around 7 kg. Fireline or Braid works well on them. I have 14 lb fireline on mine. Howard.
  20. LONG LIVE THE 7144 Howard. ( Alvey Lover )
  21. Shimano Catana 701M Snapper 7' 8-10kg Fujiguides I use this on a 6500 with 20 lb fireline, cant see the use of a more expensive carbon rod with a heavy reel. There is a 6'6'' model 10 to 12 kg but is is stiffer in the tip. Have loaded it up with 7 kg of drag and it is great! A true 10 kg stick. Howard.
  22. Idiot! There was a 20' cat did the same a few years ago, a young girl ended up 12'' shorter as her knees smashed and the bones in her legs overlaped by around 6 "
