    Mullet!

Hey raiders, i haven't tried much for mullet lately but i have never had any success. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a basic landbased rig i can use to catch mullet in the 30-40cm range. Tips on catching poddies would be great too!
  4. Hey raiders, i'm currently landbased but plan to start fishing for kings from a boat. I just have a few questions. 1. When landbased livebaiting for kings i fish the yakka under a float. Do i need to do the same from a boat? If not, what other rig? 2. If its not the crack of dawn, say, 9am, where am i most likely to find them (eg: depth, location, etc...)? Thankss
  5. Well done mate! Pittwater is dead at the moment (Especially for kings) and you have done well to get a few fish. Lovely conditions. Wish i had the same luck today.. 4 hours at Balmoral, 3 yakkas, squid stealing the bait, howling onshore wind which mad casting VERY hard. Anyway, top effort.
  6. I reckon troll the headlands. Its important to have a mix of topwater lures and divers. Maybe have 2-3 rods out instead of 4 with 2 divers (different colours) and one topwater. This was you are covering all bases and if there are fish around willing to take a lure then your chances are much better. It is ideal to troll early morning and late arvo but there's always a chance during the day. Rain probably slowed things a little also. Keep at it!
  7. Yo-Zuri Hydro Magnum 140mm in Dorado is my fave Spanish Mackerel lure. Big Halcos will work too but definitely go for the live bait option mentioned by Mpala. Should be a few spotties about too!
  8. The main wharf has livies, whiting and the other bread and butter fish.
  9. Fished Balmoral Today. Water was actually cleaner than i thought it would be after the rain we had. Yakkas were VERY finicky and hard to get. In 2 hours of trying for them with smelly baits and plenty of burley i only managed 3. No one else was having luck anyway so atleast i know it wasn't just me.
  10. There should be some kings and salmon around. Good bonito aswell. Troll the headlands and offshore islands with Yo-Zuri Hydro Magnums in 140mm or 120mm for kings and other pelagics. Bright colours are best. My favourite colour is Dorado! Any sizeable deep diver should do well though. This is the time of year where they get dollies, Striped Tuna, Mackerel Tuna, Longtail Tuna and even the odd spanish and spotted mackerel. Your best chance of a mackerel is probably trolling the islands and headlands. See PM for GPS marks etc.
  11. Should be some jacks and trevally in the creeks too. Snapper might have slowed down a little but they are still there.
  12. Thanks mate. That gives me a much clearer view on what i need to do.
  13. Hey raiders, haven't done a whole lot of SP fishing before. I have done a little but only a few small flatties would be the result. I am heading up to queensland in a few weeks for a holiday (fishing trip) and am keen to improve my SP skills on some flatties, jacks and cod. I will just be fishing in tidal estuaries in water ranging from a meter deep to maybe 7-9m. I have purchased a few different packets of SP's and am wondering if anyone can help me out on which jig head suits them best: * 3" Drop shot minnow in pumpkinseed- Bream, Flathead, Jacks, Cod * 80mm squidgy fish killer tomato or silver fox- Flathead, Jacks * 65mm squdgy wriggler in bloodworm- Whiting, Bream The size and weight of the jig head will do but if anyone could recommend a good brand that would be great! Thanks!
  14. Hey raiders, with all this rain the water is sure to be a little dirty when i next fish (Monday or Tuesday). I am going to need to pick up a few yakkas and was just wondering if the dirty water makes them harder to catch or requires different techniques?
  15. I know that there are plenty in middle harbour. Around Castle Crag in Sugarloaf Bay there are juveniles under the 2m mark. Further up near the Roseville Bridge holds a few bigger fish to around 2.6m. Saw one up here earlier this year cruising in the in the middle of the harbour. No guarantees that one would take your bait though. Make sure it is something with plenty of smell like a tuna head, bonito frame or big, bleeding livie. The jewies are in middle harbour also. Well worth a shot!
  16. Having a flick for the first time in months tomorrow! After waiting so long to get out i hope the jewies wanna play..

  17. Give them a go mate! I do all my live baiting with circle hooks. They work a treat. Should be perfect for squid and slab baits too. Depending on the size of the squid i would consider a two hook rig using circles. Will work on jews no problem!
  18. Of course not mate. I just started this thread to find out if there was a risk in eating something from here. It seems clear that the risk outweighs the gain by far!

    Holiday ideas?

Hawkesnest in Port Stephens. Beatiful holiday spot, nice ocean beach and great fishing. The river and offshore. There is one offshore charter that goes out from here and fishes broughton island offshore for snapper, kings, pearl perch, nannygai and flaties etc... Great spot to sneak out for a fish whenever you have time! Only 2 hours north of sydney.
  20. Jimmy's beach on the northern side for whiting. Dusk at the sand spit near the entrance will see you catching dozens of 40cm fish on live worms.
  21. yeh mate, if i kept what i catch here i would only be eating monthly/fortnight so definitely in moderation. Thanks for the help!
  22. Thanks for the help guys. I'll have to go with my own judgement i guess. Might pay to play it safe.
  23. Hey raiders, just a quick question. Is it safe to eat a fish caught in upper middle harbour around Roseville? Mainly for Bream, Flathead, Jewfish and mullet.
  24. Hey mate, good to hear you got one! How were you fishing the yakka (under a float, unweighted or on the bottom)?
