Just get a manual one. they are cheaper and easy to quickly put in and out of you boat. they are easy to use by yourself once you get a system going. I have a 4.55m boat and run a scotty 1080. its fine, i have put 200lb braid on it and use a 10lb bomb for more control.

nice work braining the reds! thanks for sharing your dramas. surge is a nightmare when retrieving boats, especially where a break wall is involved. we had a bad time at coffs this year! no solution unless you pull your boat out from a shallow water trailer or buy a polycraft!

I went out yesterday and all my regular spots where i usually do well were devoid of fish. two weeks ago we got hits as soon as you touched the bottom once we found the patch and managed 12 big ones in an hour all on lures. I find you just keep prospecting around till you hook a keeper then mark it on the sounder. if you do this each time you hook a solid fish you get a picture of where they are holding. But as i said, yesterday they weren't there or not feeding. maybe they have finished spawning.

You have to catch a kingfish in summer in sydney as they are the main target and would pull most other fish backwards! Bonito, Australian Salmon, Frigate Mackeral, Mack tuna are all common Sydney speedsters on the cards in Sydney Harbour!!

be careful with that one, its referred to as a happy moment (due to its venom on its spines if spiked). i would give it a wide berth and not eat it. also known as rabbit fish and black trevelly.

I have just returned from a week bareboating the whitsundays and had mixed results this time with the fishing. Unfortunately the weather was against us with 35knot se trade winds for most of the week making fishing and anchorage options limiting. I had planned to fish, Bommies and flats that i had discovered on a previous trip but these proved to be unfishable this time so had to opt for the old plan B. Anyway, i managed some nice fish that will make me want to get back up to this unique part of the world. The first pillie i drifted out resulted in this monster 112cm Queenie caught as i sipped my first beer at an anchorage out of the wind. what a start! As the weather was so unkind, i spent time trolling some fishy areas and the highlights were this lovely Bar cheeked coral trout which tasted a treat bbqed at whitehaven beach for lunch. Also i hooked a massive spanish mackerel 25kg plus (easy) that had the lure pull whilst trying to land the fish at the back of the Cat ( my girlfriend wont let me have a gaff) with all the dingy and davits, getting in the way in 35knot windy conditions. Unfortunately the lure flew back and punctured the dingy so i had a foot pump in the tender for the rest of the trip. all in all its an awesome place to fish and visit. we saw tonnes of wildlife, Eagles, turtles, dolphins, and curious baby whales with mother in tow. We also managed about 10 species, including small GTs, Bigeye trevelly, spotted and spanish mackerel and a few small reefies, like red emperor and perch. despited the conditions, the geography of the area allows you to still enjoy your time.

I work in TV and we use Gopros every week. I would recommend the gopro as it is so established now. It has so many versatile mounting options, and is great quality. i would recommend buying the hero 3 silver or black. Black is the best if you can afford it. as you want to do some underwater shots, make sure you have a flat lens on the housing. the hero 2 models have a round lens on the housing and underwater this limits the focus of the camera to about 1 meter (buying the dive housing eliminates this problem but if you get the hero 3, the flat housing is standard. the wifi in them chew the battery power so turn it off when your not using it. also, the wifi does not work underwater. other great cameras are the contour brand. all have there pros and cons

plenty of salmon feeding around north head on small lures/ baitfish. if your after a nice feed try drifting off diamond bay in 110 ft with bait for flatties. move around if your getting hassled by jackets. the artificial reef off the gap is also worth a look for kings etc the co ords are on the fisheries website. otherwise drifting north harbour is always good if the weather is nasty.

Ignored seabreeze and the boat show and went for a session on the sydney reds with erroll. turned out to be the best choice as we came home with a nice feed. awesome to eat the fish before it went rigamortis! all on softies.

rarenium are great reels. i have 2 and they are light and smooth. the t curve powerspin rods are awesome strong softplastics rods. Erroll recently caught a 97cm king, a jellybean YFT, a big Mac tuna and a 77cm Black cod no worries. I'm thinking of getting one for travel up to the top end.
