    Hey Fab ...

I'll comment based on my experience with an aluminium foil fitted to a 225 Yammie. That's how I bought my rig. The problem the foil was supposed to fix was to get the stern up on a plane quicker. The Haines was stern heavy. It did that. The problems it created were:

    1. if the motor was trimmed out a bit and the foil bit hard it gave me some inconsistent turning experiences especially riding down the face of a wave,

    2. and more importantly the foil starting to crack the ventilation plate.  The Yammie motor ventilation plate was not designed to carry the forces this thing was exerting when under way. So I took it off.

When I spoke to my mechanic his comment was the cracking was to be expected he'd seen it before, he also said a couple of other things which made sense to me:

    1. the motor mounts on the transom were also not designed to carry the weight of the hull riding on them ... they were designed to carry the weight of the motor hanging down and pivoting, not carry an upward load.

    2. if a foil was the answer to these problems  and created a better ride all around,  then all manufacturers would be producing motors with larger ventilation plates as standard .. and competing on that design basis. But the reality is having a large flat plate running through the water often causes other undesirable hydro dynamic effects in addition to the extra drag.

These experiences could all be due to the size and weight of the haines .... but that's what I experienced.

I eventually solved my stern heavy problem largely by better balancing the boat. Also using the power tilt/trim to tuck the motor in during holeshot (which pushed the stern up) and then leveling the motor out once I started to plane. Not sure if any of these approaches are suitable to your craft ...sorry can't remember  if your motor is a power tilt/trim model ?

So by and large I'm with Noel on my opinion regarding foils ....

    Cheers

Thanks for your excellent info.Unfortunately it's a bit late as i have just fitted one.

Personally I don't like them at all, agree with Noel that they can be dangerous ( very dangerous ) and people use them because they see so many other people using them. At best they are a band aid solution to a minor problem with boat set up.

Yes I have had them on a motor or two over the 60 odd years that I have been using boats, but they don't stay on long and it's usually because the previous owner of the boat OR motor fitted them.

Find the reason the boat is not acting the way you want it to and correct the reason.

    Frank

    Fair enough. THANKS.

Its funny how I asked this question just over 4 years ago & you were the 1st person to answer-

After reading a bit more the overall consensus was that they help with one aspect but tend to create more problems then they solve as per Zorans answer.

So I never fitted one but just try to load as much heavy gear towards the bow.

I still with all the tackle ect forward have what I would call an average holeshot with me in the back @110kg, the motor & 25kg of fuel, at the end of the day when out solo there is only so much weight I can move forward.

Maybe its just the idea of drilling into a perfectly good & almost new looking motor that puts me off 😬

But then it could still be of benifit on the smaller motor/boat combination with less stresses that a larger vessel would produce?

Im still on the fence myself.

I have as much forward as possible like I think i told you in your post already.I just fitted a permatrim and will let you know how it goes.

    3 hours ago, frankS said:

One easy solution for you would be to get an extended fuel line and put the 25 ltrs of fuel up front.

    Frank

No room for that unfortunately mate.

had one on an old boat, made it awful in a following sea....

id be looking at other fixes (proper ones) before adding a bolt on cheapie to an expensive motor.

I'm not worried about following seas as i only fish calm waters.I do know they can cause broaching. If i ventured offshore I'd definitely avoid them.

@Fab1 , how about she sits up front?

How rude.😂🤣😂😂 maybe I'll tie her to the anchor rode.

Simply adding weight is not the ideal way to alter trim, moving weight is the go, take stuff out of the back, and put it in the front, it's very hard to alter physics.

Agree 100% No more room left to shift gear/people from back to front.

Good excuse for a bigger boat.🤣😂

  2. Can i have peoples opinions on them please? The good, the bad and the ugly.

I'm looking at getting one for my tinny in the permatrim or oz hydrofoil brand.A mate swears by them on 3 different boats he's had and I've read good and not so good about them.

My boat sits a little low in the transom with my mrs fat rump sitting on the rear bench(Hope she's not reading this) if she is I'll have to slap her around a bit🤣😂😂😂 and I'm told they do what they say like helping lift the transom, maintain plane at slower speeds etc.

    Looking forward to reading opinions.

Also one size goes up to 30hp the next size starts at 30hp.I have 30hp do i get smaller or larger size?

    Cheers.

  3. Good report mate.As for the dill in the boat he deserves to be stranded.I have my 24l tank full and a 10l as emergency(I never have needed it as i get 2-3 trips from a tank).

You'd be surprised how many morons don't carry spares too both in boats and cars.

Good on you for getting out.

It's fine now, probably 8-10 boats out at Oak Flats ramp this morning.

    So there's still hope.😂

    Fab,

bloody Covid has caused this. No-body heading overseas, so money is being spent on new boats, jetskis, caravans.

I know. Hopefully when this Covid thing is over many of those boats become garden gnomes.

    Might go out tonight yet.

I would not be making a rush decision based on what is happing right now. Summer holiday time, especially on weekends, is always a nightmare, and I personally gave up going anywhere near the water in such times long time ago - there are no joy or fish, just frustration. Saying this, the things should improve from February, and winter time is generally nice and relatively quiet.

I know mate I like winter fishing too.

@pegz was telling us that it was crowded on the weekend

We wanted to go to Berkeley to do crabbing. Might wait a week or two

Sounds like a plan waiting until Febuary as kids back at school, etc. This was my thoughts befire I made the post but thought I'd kid myself asking if it was ok out there knowing it wouldn't be.😂😂

I feel for those only able to fish daylight hours and weekends as i simply wouldn't do it.

Fab, I live down the end of burraneer. Today was like peak hour all day. Many jet skis, tons of boats (many too big for the hacking). The no wash zone was a washing machine all day. It would have been impossible to fish in the hacking today.

I'm starting to think there's no hope left for anyone to get any peace out there.I'll give it a crack soon and if it's not to my liking it's bye,bye boat as I've got better things to do than deal with all that.

Thanks for the heads up mate.

I went for a fish this arvo at Lane Cove River off a wharf, well..tried to fish, Ive not seen that many boats, mostly bowriders going up and down, people skiing, tubing, I was constantly reeling the lines in due to bucketheads coming too close.

I dont even both trying to boat on Sundays, even if I was to get a park at the famed Silverwater ramp, its becoming no fun trying to navigate massive wake waves and people everywhere now.

Not all of us can do "dark 0 thirty" trips out due to workhours and family. Let alone stay up on an all nighter out, would be nice, maybe when kids retire I might get that chance :D

@kingie chaser, Im heading out to Parsely Bay tomorrow, planning to get there about 11 am, have to wait till kids leave on outings from home first, I hope I get a spot to park, being a Monday, but will soon find out after a one hour drive, one way.

Sounds like fun.I have an hour drive to any water too mate.

Let you know tomorrow, I figure although its still school holidays a lot more people/parents will be back at work next week(has to more than this week anyway?) having used their annual leave, meaning less boats on the water midweek.

Sounds good in theory right 🤔.

I imagine night time midweek would be way better than day as well.

Weekends, well I just dont go there anymore.

If the car park is crowded at 5.45am then I will just turn around.

    Cheers.

  9.  Being tortured to death i think I'll enjoy it more.😂🤣😂😂 Sounds like my tinny will be sold very soon as i won't go in that.

I go fishing to chill out with the Family and catching fish is a bonus.

I might give it a go mid week in Feb and if I get annoyed there will be a tinny in good nick up for sale with little use.

    Cheers.

  10. What's the waterways like out there in general please?Still as hectic as Xmas time?

Planning on taking the boat  down to Windang or the hacking for a few hours night fishing as I'm assuming there will be less people about. You know what they say about assumptions don't you?

    Cheers.

  11. I caught a pelican fishing off Windang Bridge a while ago.He hooked my transom as i was driving under the bridge.I just kept driving until i spooled him and the line was free.

I didn't know pelicans could scream. This pelican was screaming out "Oi,you've got my line". And waiving his wings frantically.

    Sorry about the bad news.

Who ever you choose, read the fine print. Insurance companies are updating there deals all the time. It has been a rough year for them, with Bushfires etc. They are trying to claim back all the money they can. I have two vehicles insured. I have just received the renewal, while the value has gone down the payments have gone up over 3%. They are about to receive a phone call.

    Good luck JonD.

Don't feel sorry for insurance companies having to pay out "Every now and again mate" .Thet are all leeches on society just like banks and like banks make millions if not billions of dollars from fools like us.

They are quick to expect premium payments from their members but when it's time to pay up god help us.

We still do. We play online canasta and Cribbage tournaments daily. We also do board games and always get a new board game for family to play at Chrissy.
Covid-19 has helped bring those pursuits back.

I bought several jigsaw puzzles and craft stuff during lockdown.

    Games are great fun 👏👍

Canasta is my favourite card game.

Used to love my darts and wasn't all that bad at it, won a few contests in my hay day including an Olympic gold medal, bet you didn't know there was such a thing for darts, did you ? . Well it was the Law enforcements Olympics .

I haven't thrown a dart in about 15 years now but probably wouldn't take much to get my aim back to something competitive, never was PRO status just a pretty good dart thrower.

Still have several sets of darts still in box unused and many used sets.

    Frank

Didn't know mate.Love throwing a dart or three just don't get the time to do it often enough.

    Love this topic.

We have a dart board in the outside area. Swordies family always used to have a big dart contest over the Christmas period. Lots of fun :)

Just look around the neighbourhood at council clean up time, where's always old bikes around my area.

It's ok.I overheard the little boy next door telling his mum that someone flogged the front wheel of his bike he left at the front for 5 mins.

I better never invite that little boy over for darts.😉

  16. I needed to upgrade my lighting from a spotlight to a led ring light and didn't want to spend $200 on one.

Next best option a bicycle wheel $10, led tape lights $14 and some ally flat bar and darts i had.

    Results.
