  1. To add to what the guys said i use anti seize compound or grease on the threads and on the face of the hubs on trailer wheels and spare.

For a seized nut there's many ways to get them off but one of the essiest is heating the nut with a blow torch (Portable propane torches from hardware are cheap) then touching a candle stick to the thread area or base of nut.Melted wax will wick down into the threads and it will normally loosen off like butter once this is done.

     Well done mate.

I lift floor and clean out once a year or straight away if I suspect something has gone down there. I also have a rule I never have coins in pocket as they can be worse than stinkers.  Ron

I don't need to worry about money falling down under the floor mate.My mrs takes all mine.Yes, even coins.😂

Bet you didn’t know you lost it. Luckily you do this seasonally possibly saved you major corrosion problems can be costly.

My key lives in the ignition permanently mate and i didn't know.Don't know how the spare got there .

You always find something. Last time i found a metal reel component,  an 8Oz sinker, size 7 ball sinker and a couple of small hooks. No damage done to the hull but the tackle was well rusted.

I am careful with tackle its passengers who aren’t so careful. Always amazes me how people can damage/lose your stuff and not have the courtesy to own up and tell you.

That's humans for you mate.I stopped lending Tools/gear out decades ago due to that very point you make. They break them or lose them and it's sorry then you're left footing the bill to replace them.

  5. Pulled my floor up on my boat for a clean to find my spare key under there. How long it's been there is anyones guess.(I lift/clean yearly roughly).Found a pea size ball sinker too.

Due to a change in fishing styles I decided it was time to part with much loved zodiac. That little boat had been the most fun boat Ive owned in 43 years of owning boats.

I was looking for a boat I could attach a burley pot to without the worry of a mako taking a chomp on and something with a little more storage. I decided on another Haines signature having owned a couple in the past. The same overall length as the rib gives a much bigger deck and storage area in the rf model and the opening front hatch system also allows for good lure flicking from the bow. Haines signature 543rf.

Due to the fires and road closures getting away to view any vessel had been impossible over the Xmas period, so I bought one without viewing. How could I go wrong with a low hour, one carefull owner ( school teacher) who had garaged it from new!!!!... yes I'm a fool who trusts most people by their word.

After a 12 hour drive to pick up the boat I was a little surprised the owner wasn't there as arranged to meet me ( he had been sleeping until the banks close Friday afternoon). Three hours late he rocks up with his first words being "you bought it it's yours" my heart sunk as I cast my eye under the hull seeing poorly matched paint and patchy filling. Walking to the back I simply couldn't believe how bashed the engine was and a totally written off propeler. Anything that could be rusty was, even under the cowling things were grim to say the least. Lie after lie started dribbling from the owners mouth, who wasn't even the person who I had been dealing with from the boatsales add. Contrary to the add it hadn't had just one owner either and the previous owner had lived in QLD where the boat was kept on an open mooring, hence the very poor gelcoat above the waterline.

The regular service history was a service in 2012 and 2016. The safety kit consisted of flares that expired in 2013. Just about every repair and fitting had been done with steel screws or string. Trailer wheels nuts snapped off and incorrect rollers for boat. Every drop of fuel drained from the tank, dead batteries, the list goes on and on.

My drive home was depressing to say the least, my wife had already given me the 'told you so treatments n the phone!!!

Trying to move on and get the boat ready for the water as soon as possible, dumped a heap of money into it this last week and trying  to put the poor start behind me, after all what are mortgages for!!!!!

He saw you coming a mile away mate. For an expeienced boatie that's owned so many boats you'd think you would of learnt a looooong time ago not to depart with your hard earned until you were 110% sure everything was honky dory.

     DTA- Don't trust anyone.

Hopefully your mistake doesn't send you broke. All the best with getting her back on the water.

    Hey Guys

New to boating as just bought a 2005 Quintrex Estuary Angler with a 25hp Yamaha.

I am wanting to remove one of the transom nuts and replace with a bolt on type of lock, now i realise that there are a good few available on the likes of evilbay but just wondering would a car wheel locking nut do the same job as long as i made sure the thread was the same.

Or does anyone have any home made ideas for a bolt on lock not the slider tube type as mine does not have the 2 tightening levers.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    auspom

Best lock if it's to prevent theft is a tack weld on the existing nut.Nothing is truly anti-theft though. I could have pretty much anything off within sec/min including wheel nuts.

Some photos would help guys recommend options too.

      Cheers.

I understand the reason why they SAY to pump the oil from the bottom but what is wrong if you just put in the specified amount from the top? Surely it would all flow down and any air pockets (if there happens to be any) will disappear as soon as the gearbox starts turning.

Obviously, if less than the required amount goes in and the top hole is overflowing then you either wait for it to go down or turn the gears until you can add the whole amount.

What about when you tilt the engine all the way up and then back down again? Same thing.

As they say there's only one way to find out.Personally I'd keep filling from the bottom drain plug.

Thanks mate, hopefully I can squirt it in just with the bottle and I don't have to buy a pump

You can get away with just the one bottle if you have access to air( I use compressed air)and put a small hole in the base of the bottle when you can't manually squeeze anymore by hand and give it a squirt with compressed air to force the fluid into the gearcase.

Another option is filling a large syringe and injecting the oil in .

I've used both methods for various applications and they do work.

It's very hard to get it all out using just the bottle, infact it's almost impossible. Buy a pump, look after it and it will serve you well.

    Hi All

Just wondering if anyone uses an alternative oil other then yamalube in the gearcase.

Got a 70h 2 stroke I think around 2006 model. Not sure what viscosity it should be.

    Cheers

    This will suit.

  12. I'd be locked up as this is my pet hate.Right up there with idiots leaving filth in "OUR" Bushland etc.

These people only understand one language Rick, but the problem is not many are prepared to give them "Free" language and swimming lessons hence it continues to happen.

Watching someone do the wrong thing without getting involved achieves nothing.

Not having a dig at you mate as i know your reasons for not doing more than you did.Just saying that there's no point getting upset really as while we as a race  continue to stand back and do nothing these vermin that do these things will continue to do the wrong thing destroying everything in their path dud to greed.

Better safe than sorry Fab. I have been using non-Yamaha impellors in my 15 HP and never had any problems. Worth pointing out though that I fish almost entirely in fresh water. Hope you get everything A1 and can return to the water confident in the motor doing its thing. Cheers, bn

Me too.If not I'll pass the mrs the paddles.😂😂

I never use aftermarket parts on things like water pumps, some stuff is OK, but "important" items, no, genuine every time, on the age thing, wear is often relevant to where the boat is used, if you continually churn sand with your motor, you will wear out pumps quick, if you use a deep water ramp, and never see sand, they can, and do, last for years

I agree with what you've said  but this is a first for me using after market.Maybe it got through qc unchecked. Beats me.

I've ordered a whole genuine yamaha impellor kit.May as well replace the lot.

  15. Put old impellor on and works fine.Checked new impellor with micrometer...thickness of vanes, height of hub, length of vanes etc and there was found to be slightly smaller then the OEM Yama ha one originally fitted.

For those that change impellors on a yearly basis here's something to ponder .

My impellor is the original one that came with my boat/engine when bought in 2011.Apart from some very light creasing where the vanes meet the hub of the impellor itself its like brand new.So is the stainless cup and plate with very, very light wear

The thing i do religiously is turn the motor over by hand every week as well as move the steering from lock to lock a couple of times.

You make up your own mind how often the impellor should be changed.

I've been  ordering after market parts for years and this is a time when it's  bitten me on the Arxxe.

The only thing i can put it not pumping water is that that non-genuine impellor was slightly out of spec(they are rubber) and not sealing/functioning correctly as all other variables remained the same when swapping from old to new and back again.

        Thanks for reading.
