At least something for the boat Fab, even though they all fell back overboard.  😀

I would of kept them if we hadn't gone to the fishmarkets the day before. As you know i don't catch many fish but it's not the end of the world if i release them too.Spending quality time with the mrs and boy far out weighs catching fish for me.

South west arm looks interesting I have only caught a few good bream and some tailor there. At least it’s got some protection from southerlies. A day of exploring is always good.

If you hadn’t gone out you would have wondered what the day would have brought.

There's some big things lurking in there in the deeper water mate.I've been busted off a few times in that part of the river. It's one of my favourite spots further in to anchor up and have lunch.

Good to see you're getting out Fab. Good for the soul. bn

Cheers mate.I'd be out every day watching the world go by if i could. Beautiful part of sydney the port.My boat fired up with half a kick after spending months sitting idle and went like a trouper the whole time too.

It’s nice to hear you got on the water Fabian and a few fish in average conditions.

Cheers mate, love being out and always enjoy ourselves no matter the results. There was no working on the tan this time around or getting a sunburnt potatoe head.😂

Good job getting out on the water especially with the family Fabian ...  the fish are a bonus !

    Cheers Zoran

They sure are a bonus mate. What matters the most to us is doing things as a family spending quality time together.I try to do as much as i can with them outside working hours.Sometimes I'm tired but still make the effort of taking them somewhere even if it's just out locally to lunch or dinner.

    Cheers.

  2. As usual hit the port with the family adound 8am for a few hours fishing.

Went straight to swa only to catch nothing substantial after adound 2hrs in various places.

Thought we'd go up river past Grays Point to have a crack drifting.  We manage one really nice bream and 3 flounder using prawns on running sinker rigs.

We released all of them to fight another day as just yesterday we went to the Sydney fish markets  to buy some deep sea perch fillets for the mrs.

It was miserable and windy out there eith water temp anywhere in the high 19's to 21 deg depending on where you fished.

    Cheers.

Yes but the devil is in the detail. On that particular day did you decide to go with:

    • The suicide,
    • Circle,
    • Octopus - circle,
    • Long shank
    • Pan fish
    • Mutu
    • J-hook,
    • Etc.

These details are important to the rest of us in deciding which hook isn't working in a particular location. ;)

Well, you may want to stay away from suicide, circle and longshank then and if you want to fish somewhere that you can guarantee another person hasn't pulled fish from....fish beside me.

Hey Fab. Have you thought about mounting a GoPro or something on your trailer looking at the area and driving around so that you get some video and sound of your coupling.  Video is worth a thousand guesses

    Bear

Thanks mate.I know what it is.It's the ball inside the coupling is a loose fit.Towbar mounts and trailer winch post, draw bar etc solid as.

Hey @Fab1... I've been thinking about your conundrum because like you "I'm a stubborn B*ST*RD" when it comes to solving mechanical things.....my rig is a lot heavier but I only hear a clunk (tow ball hitch moving in the tow bar assembly) when there is a major shift in weight eg. heavy braking, a sharp turn etc. otherwise it all settles to give a quiet tow.

So here are a few thoughts that may help isolate the problem before you start spending cash:

    1. Can you get someone else with a 50mm towball to tow the boat/trailer around the block.  This will isolate the Kia (towball/towbar hitch) out of the equation.

I've towed it with my ute and theres no noise other than the usual noise with a haymen reece tow bar you get.

    2. If the noise is still there then you most of the way to concluding the cause is the boat/trailer...  you've already double checked the towball weight, so I suspect something may be causing vibration.

2a. Are the wheels balanced? Sometimes on trailers they don't do that, my box trailer rattled like sh*t until I had the tires balanced.

It maked noise driving at very slow speed over ,speed humps, gutters, braking etc.Even at 10-20 kays.I agree with unbalanced tyres but that occurs at much higher speeds.

2b. Can you run a simple rope test to check that the axle is mounted square to the trailer and equidistant on each side from the towball. (Run rope from centre of towball hitch to centre of LH wheel hub - this should be the same length as centre of towball hitch to centre of RH wheel hub). If they are even slightly out, the tyres would not be running on the true round face. If you have done a few thousand kilometers you may also be able to see uneven wear on the tyres (ie the inside and outer edges wear differently on the same tyre).

Axle is square as i have moved it to balance trailer.(Trailer has always made noise).Iv'e towed a few thousand kms with those tyres and are wearing evenly.

2c. Apologies, I can't remember all the previous posts but is the noise present at all speeds (say up to 50km/h or just at highway speeds)?  If it's just at highway speeds - looking at the picture you posted previously you rig doesn't appear to be very heavy at all. If slipstream over the Kia is getting under the bow I would not be surprised if it's lifting the bow and hence significantly reducing your downward tow ball weight to the point that the the trailer is acting stern heavy, floating and clunking around on the tow ball. So you may actually benefit from having greater than recommended towball weight.

It's fine on the freeway at 110k up and down hills etc is when you accelerate and stop that its worse as theres play in the ball and coupling.

I can and have tightened the grub screw on coupling and noise goes away but then i can't remove hitch without loosening it again.

2d. Or as you have said the trailer tow ball coupling is oversized (>50mm) so you're looking at changing it to fix the issue.

Anyway, I guess I am encouraging some diagnostic testing to isolate the problem.

I have a 50mm towball kit on my Landcruiser and as I said, I can vouch that its a quiet tow whether I tow my boat, or my 6x4 box trailer, or a couple of other trailers I have towed. So if I was to trial tow your rig,  I know we can pretty well eliminate my towball/tow hitch as a contributor - only problem is I am in Castle Hill not Campbell Town way. Maybe another raider is closer and can work with your schedule or you tow your rig to my place and we test before/after your work commitments.

    Cheers

    Zoran

Thanks for the offer mate but i will give it a miss as i know the issue is in the ball and coupling.

Ill put both new ones on.

Take a set of Calipers and measure a few tow balls to make sure yours wasn’t made on a Friday and is a mm or 2 smaller than everyone else’s.

    Insert ball jokes here

Mine are too dirty for public forums mate. The jokes not balls.

Well done old mate, Me like others have said I think the Whiting would have come home with me, your choice and I commend you for your decision. But geeze it would be hard!!.

    Frank

It's easy for me.I just plonk them over the side knowing I've given Yowie a chance to catch something the poor bugger. 😂😂He's a terrible fisherman and i get sick of seeing him come home emty handed.🙄

I caught three whiting (all 27-28cm) on the flats on Saturday afternoon (all released).  I took photos of all of them, but they look the same anyway so attached just one.  There was a few undersize tharwine in between them.  I fished the run in tide with nippers, the bite went cold towards the last 90 mins of the run in (maybe the fish are spread too much by then)

The boat traffic has been crazy this summer.  Even on the weekend some of the wake from the big cruisers in the channel was causing waves to break on the flats

I can imagine it would have been.During the week days is great and at night for the above reasons.

I don't know wheather to take that as a complement or a tease.😂I usually base my success on if i can catch something bigger than my prawn on the end of the line.lol.

You finally catch some fish, then throw them back in.  :074:

Sounds like you had a good day out anyway. It is nice to have a relaxing day out and find a few fish. Need to spend a few dollars and buy another reel - some specials at the popular fishing stores at the moment. Good work there Fab.

    Dave.

Yeah,it's not the first time I've put them back.I think i have some spare reels in the trusty shed.

Nice to hear you are back on the water Fab.  Sounds like a good day on the water,  I would struggle to put those tasty whiting back.

They are a nice eating fish the whiting.I have to admit it did cross my mind to keep them and decided to let them go in the end.Maybe when the planets line up next time and i catch some i will keep a few.

  9. Late report but had to get the boat out before it grew roots last Tuesday morning. Hit grays solo  about 8am and headed out to give her a good squirt in the river. My main objective for the day was taking her out for a run and just relaxing without thinking about work and perhaps having a swim but still packed bait and berley.

I went into the swa and found a nice hole on the sounder with good bait showing in about 20m of water.I threw the anchor down then deployed the burly.

Two rods went out one with squid and one with salted tailor fillets.

I managed to catch a few fish(most undesized) but 2 legal whiting, some trevally and a nice bream plucked out from the rocky shore.

I tried on this trevally that went back taking photos on my phone but i found it almost impossible with the other rod going off and crap on the floor of the boat.lol

Highlight of the day if you can call it that was hooking a rat and it breaking my reels drag on a squid strip losing it boatside.(It's a old cheap reel).

Ended up at bundeena swimming and just having a leisurely day out on the boat.

All fish returned to water to give Yowie a chance of catching a feed as i feel sorry he never catches anything.

The mexican photographed isn't me but is hiding from Trump.

Boat ran like a trouper since i resolved issues.

    Thanks for reading.

    Fab,

As Colonel Sanders once said, "finger licking good." (only kidding) Hope it gets better soon.

Port Hacking still has lunatics in speed boats and on jet skis. (wish I had a few RPG's or heat seeker missiles to use  :074:)

The fish are there, but spooked by the noisy boats. February may be a bit quieter and should see some fish on the chew.

Thanks mate.I don't blame you for thinking that way.

Mate that looks bad I would give it a rest

My thoughts too.I was thinking i wouldn't want it to get infected from all the fish i catch and need to fillet.😂

Oh well at least it's a good clean cut and should heal pretty quickly, I assume you are a lefty ?. Get back into it, I like to see what you are up to.

No,right hand dominant. I cut it picking it up of the floor believe it or not.Haven't done much at all mate.

You are going to go nutso if you don't keep busy Fabian. Protect the damaged finger and get out there mate. Highly unlikely that there won't be enough room for you to catch a feed. Plenty of water to access and the fish are biting, if the reports are anything to go by. Good luck mate and I hope your finger makes a complete recovery. Cheers, bn

    Thanks mate.

Is the finger grinder or saw related ?, 80 present of workshop accidents involve grinders. As for the boat traffic, I have seen it worse, the bay is copping a flogging but the hacking is pretty quiet.

    Frank

Neither grinder or saw.I cut it with a olfa knife 3/4 way through.

    Thanks for the reply.20190120_155829.thumb.jpg.414290e57e3f8119c08ad89e2805b193.jpg

  13. Want to go out fishing but unsure how busy it is out there during morning hours. The ususl haunts like hacking/windang im guessing will still be packed due to school holidays etc.

Iv'e nearly severed a finger too so I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

    Thoughts?

Our house once had a heat pump hot water pump, meaning our electric metre doesn't have the off peak cheaper night time electricity. The cost of getting it put back has put me off having it done, especially considering how little electricity we use.

Our house is great for collecting heat from the sun during winter and though it can get warm in summer, simply closing the blinds helps heaps.

We are a family of five and regularly have the kids friends stay over for weekends. We have a deep freeze and a giant sized fridge freezer. The kids all have computers but most of the time they are outside doing some sort of exploring.

I changed to led bulbs for even better economy than fluro which seemed to blow every time we had ellectricle storms. We all tend to be good at turning off lights around the house which obviously reflects in our bills.

Our last bill was $236 and winter bills are closer to $300, while our biggest bill was almost $350.

The kids are environmentally minded and so have no problems showing in under 3 mins, they used to use a timer but that novelty wore off.

We would need to huddle in a swag to get your bills.Ours is $1300+ each and every bill cycle.I have friends with bigger houses than mine, more people ,run a/c etc (I don't) getting $600- bill cycles.

We originally thought that there was something wrong with meter but had it checked twice.

We've always had high bills in the 18yrs we've lived here.

If i had your bills id go on a cruise to celebrate.
