  1. Nice work.

They are good sized ones, and great work for a first up attempt. Tip for cleaning, don't bother scaling them, just gut them, then fillet and skin. Skinning is much easier if you leave the scales on. Don't bother with getting rid og the black gut lining, this is only important if you are cooking them whole, otherwise its a waste of time and effort.

    Matt

Thanks for the tips! That's pretty much the same as flatty. No guts, no scale, just fillet with skin off!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  2. You are now joining the addicted luderick anglers club,There is no turning back you will be getting downs in your sleep I do anyway.Congratulations and good going on your first attempt

I wouldn't say addicted but it was good fun! I generally dream about the rod peeling off. There know doubt though without people posting on how they catch luderick, I wouldn't have even bothered. Glad I did!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  3. It is great to take kids to fishing, I agreed too.

My 11 years old and I went together lately a few times.

He has developed some interest after a few keepers.

Now I am in trouble because a school friend of his is keen to come along with the dad too, we are no fisherman by all means.

I can tie a couple knots, another dad IS going to buy his gear.

Hope you and kids have a great day.

It's great taking the kids fishing and if he can get a mate involved even better. Keeps him entertained while you can concentrate on fishing. Even if your a novice, start reading the posts on this site of the types of rigs sinkers bait etc you can use. Also the area and time and tides people fish. It will help you immensely. Good luck!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  4. Thanks for the encouragement!

I am not a good fisherman though.

    Have a productive day Scratchie.

You too! It's Thursday and the little fella has already reminded me it "fishing day". So I'm busy cleaning so I can get out there! But it's pouring here ATM. So hopefully by time I'm finished it stops!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  5. Scratchie you have to proud of that effort well done mate, did you try any metal lures from that spot?

Yeah I did. As well as SP's. but I figured with all the cabbage and weed sitting on the rocks, the chance of blackfish was good.

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  6. Well done on your 1st & P.B Scratchie.

Freshly caught, filleted & skinned they are a top feed.

Just shake them in a freezer bag of flour & mixed herbs & pan fry them. YUM!

Frantic is right. I would be hammering that spot with heavier gear & big plastics

for a jew. It looks like a prime spot.

If they won't take a placcy then a big fillet of fresh blackfish is a top bait off the rocks.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

Thanks for the info grant! I didnt know that jewies would eat a fillet of blackfish! I target them in the bay with mullet fillet or live/butterflied tailor or squid! Will definitely give it another go soon!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  7. that spot looks tops (bit of white water ,changes in depth )bet theres a jewie lurkin there somewhere )mate u wanna bleed them as soon as you catch , when you leave spot if you can find a calm pool fillet & skin them , should be plenty around your way with the breeding run of sea blackfish /seamullet /sea bream all pretty much coinciding with each other .i know of big catches from hat head . season little ,flour then pan with butter and a couple of minutes each side and oh yeah ,time to eat .

Thanks frantic. I did bleed them straight away because every post I've seen they all seem to have there throats cut. I didn't know to remove skin, learnt that while eating. My culinary skills are pretty good though, so I give the fish respect and not over cook it. The kids loved it anyway and the eldest said it was his new favourite. So with a bit more reading and studying I'll be adding luderick to the menu!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  8. Nice one scratchie! Never thought you would be putting in a luderick report! Great work on making the best of a situation and seeing that amply rewarded. Don't give up on the plastics though. I can't give any specific advice for SPs off the rocks but they slay many species and usually catch decent sized fish once you get the hang of it.

Thanks nbdshroom, mate I didn't think I'd be putting up a luderick report either! But once I realised I have no clue on sp's, that was the only alternative! Tastes great though, with a lemon and dill sauce! Yummmo!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  9. Well done on the luderick the fish you got are around the average size for off the rocks although 39cms is up in the mid too large size range.

As for cooking them i dont eat seafood so other members will have a better idea.

Surprised hawkesbass!!! You don't eat seafood?

Thanks for the feedback, I ended up filleting them!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  10. G'day raiders,

Well, I had a couple of hours to kill today, so I decided to take a walk around the rocky outcrops of sunny corner, a renown spot up here but I had not been before. After a 15min trek in, I arrive at the cliff face and scoped the area. It was low tide but the swell was still pushing in hard. I've never gone fishing without bait before so this was a first for me. Armed with a few brand new SP'S and metals that have been in the box for years, I surveyed the area and picked my spot.

    post-24974-0-12873600-1369204186_thumb.jpg

I began to toss metals and plastics for about 30mins for one bite I think. After that I realised I didn't know what I was doing, so with no bait I looked in my tackle box to find a long float. After remembering reading posts from people like stormy etc, I sort of remembered some explaining how to make a rig for luderick. So I thought I'd give it a go, found some cabbage, trusted the rig I had made and in she goes! Within 30secs, I get my first down. Didn't land it but ahhhhh the rig worked. So I rebaited, tossed some burley and my rig and again another down, this time I'm on but 10secs later I dropped it. So out again and bang I'm on, played the fish and after a short fight up comes my first ever blackie!

    post-24974-0-59249000-1369204821_thumb.jpg

The fish goes 36cm, not sure weight but looked really healthy.

With confidence booming I try again and within minutes I'm on again and break my PB on landing the next one.

    post-24974-0-16157100-1369205030_thumb.jpg

This one goes 39cms and very fat and healthy! And I'm delighted with my catch!

Overall, I had 6 downs, dropped 2 and landed 2. Was really pleased with my catch and it made the trek out very easy!

Questions for all you rock fishos:

    A. What's the usual size of blackies and are the ones I caught of good size?

    B. How do you cook them? Whole or fillet?

    post-24974-0-25475900-1369205568_thumb.jpg

So thanks, to all the raiders that are providing info on rigs, techniques etc on their posts because if it was not for this site I would be walking back empty handed.

    Thanks for reading!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

  16. How's this report for you, hope it helps!

    ESTUARY -

Reports this week suggest that the estuary will be the place to fish this weekend. Bream and Luderick are the two stand out species with plenty getting caught from Karuah to Shoal Bay. The oyster racks at the entrance of the Karuah are fishing well on the incoming tide for Bream especially if you anchor and burley and allow your baits such as mullet gut or peeled endeavour prawns to drift back into the racks, be sure to use fluorocarbon leaders as those oysters can be nasty. Bream up to 44cm around Soldiers Point on a night time. Fish the rock walls at Fame cove or around the oyster racks tossing lightweighting hated Z Mann grubs amongst the racks. Luderick have fired up especially around the Break walls. Plenty are getting caught from the anchorage so to Nelson Bay and the Torpedo Tubes at Shoal Bay. Cabbage weed is the best at the moment and with the low swell and tides will be easy to get from around Boat Harbour and alike. Some good Jewies were caught in the bay. fish the back of Middle Isalnd with live baits also heard of a few smaller ones coming from the wreck at Salamander. The Long Tail Tuna keep anglers on there toes as the rip into the Garfish around the wharf behind Salamander Shoes. Some big Kings have also been sighted doing the same thing around the break wall.

    BEACH -

Its great to see the beaches firing with plenty on offer from Birubi to Zenith. The big news this week Jewies from in front of the surf club at Fingal, fish on a high tide change last weekend. There are also some good Tailor from around the spit along with a few Bream. Zenith and Box beach are fishing well for Bream especially the northern and southern end, there are also a few Tailor mixed in.Whiting can be still caught despite the water temp cooling off. Try One Mile or Samurai for better results. Birubi is holding plenty of good Bream in the gutters but it pays to fish on sunrise or sunset.

    ROCKS -

Its the time of year when rock fishing comes into its own. Plenty of species are on offer and you can always find protection from the wind. This week has been great with good fish caught in the washes. Fingal Point is fishing well for Tailor and Bonito whilst the southern end of Box Beach is fishing well for Tailor and Bream. Boulder Bay is holding plenty of Drummer and Luderick but it pays to walk a little bit further to find the better quality fish. A few reports of Snapper coming from the rocks at Sunny Corner and Fishermans bay this week and with a building swell over the weekend it will be worth fishing.
