  1. shelf is about 28 miles easy to do in the haines weathers lookin ok u might get a bit wet but the swell will hopefully stay down. lures depends what you have. id be running all skirts id be running a lumo style on the long rigger or long corner if ur only running 2 lures (cant go past the pakula lumo med sprocket) short rigger have a black and purple style short corner maybe similar colour and a bit smaller and a bit of dark green (something that looks like a slimey) long corner maybe a blue green style or an orange if you find bait on the way out stick to it. could pick up a small black or a stripe.
  2. dont say im not good to you knapers. gps here will help: http://www.marinews.com/exploring/gps/fg_nsportstep.htm theres plenty of action to be had at port. livies can be obtained around the headland as u get out of the so called bar. few bills around the gibber if theres bait. kingies around the pinnacle and broughton island and the like. and i mean big kings we got a 28kg model there last year. how big is your boat? if you're going to go to the shelf. go to the "car park" a well known gps spot troll lures until you find bait, if you find bait troll around the edges. no luck? whack a bait jig into it and feed the livies back out on hooks and wait for the bite. theres good water still so you should do well. by catch of a decent dollie and yellowfin happen regulary. Ive heard a few rumours of some big blues around the shelf at the moment. have fun Col
  3. dont forget to put the bung in <------ always a good tip and its best not to learn the hardway !!
  4. if you sweet talk ur way around this site mate hopefully someone will take you out. I would take you out if if i wasnt bloody working. welcome anyway !!!
  5. thanks for the info guys! see how i go!
  6. its perfectly safe. you dont need a vhf. you get perfect reception on the 27mhz. i have been at boxhead and my mate has been at browns mountain and raised him on the 27mhz when you guys were out at the pittwater social i was at the fad talking to a few of u on the radio. 80% of the fishing i do in my 5.2m centrecab is done on the shelf. you just gotta be smart about it. and yeah tandem with another boat is always a good thing just in case. i dont know if id be going out to the fad in your boat joe unless its super flat, but in a 4.3m centre console you could do the shelf easy. 7m haines you should have been at browns not the wave rider!!!
  7. not a bad spaniard. good work mate!
  8. fads are deliberately placed and are nowhere near the shipping lanes. they shouldnt have a problem avoiding them. dollies dont take long to take up homes, might take a week or so for decent numbers, but if you find any floating debris in a current line. you can guarantee a few dollies will be under it. as said before fads are strictly fads (fish aggrivating devices) the wave rider buoys will attract dollies as well, but the fads are designed for one thing.
  9. Hi Guys, Gonna be boatless for a while when i sell mine so might do a bit of good ol beach fishing for a few noahs etc in between a bit of lbg. just wondering what you guys use. i know theres the good old alveys but what threadlines do you guys use? and what rod do u use braid? anyone been using the kite method to get ur bait out far? i think ive got a 9 or 10ft rod somewhere there but need to chuck a new reel on it. cheers, Col
  10. the fad is gone. it got smashed by the big swell we had about a month ago
  11. the boat was probably ****ed anyway people like that are just offloading shit dont let it turn you off a good boat though. least u know where not go
  12. think the difference if any was the powerhouse. i think U.S. models at first didnt use the standard mercruisers
  13. but in any case that should not happen. my boat has a very deep v and is a bit unstable at rest. ive even had 2 waves broke over the front and its never even looked at doing that. trailcraft seem to be buggy boats imo stay away!
  14. this is the 2nd trailcraft i have heard go under. i saw a similar one go under at woy woy wharf, brand new, the guy put it on the wharf to go get some alcohol came back and it was sunk. apparently the skin fitting on the bung let go (apparently). for the price, there are plenty more plate alloy boats id be looking at before trailcrafts. and yeah when you insure your boat you can insure your gear also. 5k of my insured sum is gear.
  15. they sound ok. they are 100% protein too. maybe i can ditch the protein shakes finally and chew on a soft plastic or 2 every morning instead
  16. Hi mate, You can not go past the bertram 25ft. it is worldy reknowned as an awesome gamefishing machine. I have been looking at buying one for sometime now. first step would be to work out how much you have to spend. you can pick up a late 80s bertram for around 30 to 70k depending on condition. i dont have too much money to throw around but from what i have seen, you can pick up something really worthwhile from about 50 to 70, even some early 90's models. check boatpoint, trading post etc as there are so many bertrams around because they are such an awesome boat. i found one the other day that would have been perfect. converted to a single screw. never been antifouled always kept on a trailer it was the sportfisher model so had all the gear i want for gamefishing etc for around 55k. just remember these are old boats and the cheaper scale are no doubt full of problems. as you know berties 25 and up are usually twin engines. the bertie 23 is a good option with the single screw. i have however seen quite a few 25's been modified to have a single screw. if you are seriously thinking about one and most of it checks over, get a full survey done make sure the hull is ok and the motors are sound. theres nothing like inheriting someone elses problems. another option is the 24ft huntsman flybridge. a bit rare to come by but also a solid boat around the same price usually a bit cheaper than the bertie. if you want some more info etc pm me. Cheers, Col

congrats mate, thats a solid one
  18. haha you're right andrew. but with the season coming down, i think i can afford to have one over winter. she will have to be gone by summer though!
  19. no money no petrol spendin time with my new woman me thinks not that that is a bad thing!
  20. its all a frame of mind and experience in boats. as bashir has mentioned haines haines haines its because thats what he has and is happy with it. mine is a custom made 5.2m centrecab (which im selling soon *wink* *wink*) based off a haines hull. and i havent found a flaw in it either, but am upgrading soon. but there are 1000s of boats worthy a mention. get a feel for what sort of length you want, if you want a cabin or if you dont mind getting a bit wet for extra room etc etc. will you be fishing overnight? what extras will you want i.e. game poles etc? are u comfortable with the ride of an aluminium boat and dont mind a bang or 2 every now and then? look at boatpoint website, look at the local papers. look at the trading post. go out and look at some boats maybe even go for a test run, the more you look the more you will think about what you actually want. as you are buying 2nd hand, make sure you check the boat thoroughly and the motor, for 20k you could get something very nice with a low hrs outboard. you might be looking at older model boats but they are still solid. 4strokes are good but for that money you would probbaly be gettin an older model boat with a newer motor, around 20k u could find a good package of say a 5m boat with a low hours 2 stroke and that would be more than ample. all i can say is dont rush out and buy a boat, research as to what you want and go out knowing what you want and dont jump at the first boat you look at. i know because im looking at the moment. plus its fun just to look and dream! Have Fun! Col
