  1. Depends how much you have to spend. Some ideas could be: 1. Trynos 12, 80lb braid, Tcurve rod Roughly $600 2. Shimano Bait Runner 6000, 50lb braid, Ulgy Stock 8-15kg about $300-$400 These can get you kings, tuna etc. What I would put more money into is the reel (Drag) and line. The rods can be substituted with a cheaper rod ($80- - $150) Cheers Squidboy
  2. Hi fellow raiders, I am currently running a Daiwa Monster Mesh 6-8 PE rod. The rod was buckledover at 18kg a few weekends ago when a good mate of mine landed a 23kg kingfish. My concern is that if I need to run 15kg at sunset that I will be in the market for another reel. I also have a Stella 10000 which is a treat on the bigger kings. Let me tell you, there is nothing like these reals going nuts, and yes you hold on, usually the rod and boat at the same time lol
  3. Hi fellow raiders, I own a Shimano Tyrnos 12 Overhead reel with 80LB braid. It is rated at 15kg drag on their website. I was wondering whether I need to set sunset at 15kg or only the strike setting. Would appreciate any advice, as I can crank up 18kg at sunset if I rellay try. Squidboy
  4. Good work Andrew, and like Jim, get a real job lol. Mate there were some big fish out there that day. Being dusted and not landing one has been on my mind everyday since. Oh well, back to 100lb and knot tying for now. Still have a sore back too. Congratulations, it shows plenty of research, patience and technique brings in very impressive results.
  5. Fish of the month. Great Catch of a lifetime I know the effort you went into for this, and it was surely worth it. Congratulations to you and your skipper. Squidboy and Squidgirl
  6. Nice work Jim. You are right, with a bit of persistance, you do manage to get them when things are quite. Would of been such a buzz reeling it in. Landing a 120cm fish in sydney is pretty hard work. I have only ever managed one and he definitly had me on the bottom at one stage and it took another mate to help me lift him off the bottom on sunset. Hope you enjoyed ever moment of that fish, they are a ball of fun. Squidboy
  7. I have been reading up a fair amount and it appears water turbulence is what could be affecting both our sounders. They recommend either dropping the sounder lower or to lower the back part of the transducer by about six degree. Hope this helps. Will be testing again on the weekend
  8. Maybe it ran into a downrigger weight in its early days???
  9. Hi raiders, I own a Quintrex Topender with a humminbird sounder. The sounder used to work in greater than 20 knots in the old boat but I cant seem to get it spot on in the quinnie. Could someone PM me a photo of how their sounder is setup on their boat so I can get a good idea? I ran it parallell to the bottom of the boat to start with, but something either hit the trnasducer or the water ended up cracking the holder off. Then I ran it a little higher but I got readings to 7 knots and then nothing. Would appreciate any help. Cheers Squidboy
  10. I have past on the message to squid girl to post her own reports. She is still talking about landing that fish to all her friends. Now back to the BBQ and more refreshments for me as I watch all the boaties on the water Happy new year fellow raiders!!!
  11. Just want to start by wishing all you fellow Raiders a fantastic new year. I hope you all get those inking squid, spooling kings and snapping snappers. Also enjoy tonight and be safe. Ok, yesterday I was itching for a fish and with this weather I have not had the opportunity to go outside. Took my wife to a local spot in the harbour and set some fresh squid out into the deep. After about forty minutes my wife pulls up this baby jewie. I was a little surprised with the amount of cruise boats and people prtying with loud music even to get one jew. I have to thank the boat who drove so close to the shore line he took about 100m of braid and my rig. I wasnt happy but I exected some inexperienced boaties on the water at this time of the year. The boat was not more than 5 meters off the shore line. In any case, I am happy that I did not lose my rod and reel. We fished the change of tide at 7:30pm last night and got home by sunset. It was a beautiful windy afternoon but definitely worth it. We used fresh squid stripes on a 5/0 cirlce hook with a large sized snapper sinker. Fish was let to run for about 5 seconds before the bait runner drag was set to fight. My wife loved pulling in this little fish. Due to her bad back, it took a little longer, but she had that fishos smile on her face the whole time she was fighting the fish patiently. Not a huge fish by any means, but for a quite stroll down to the harbour, it was definitly worth the outing. Well that is it for 2011 and I am looking forward for some 2012 lower swells. By the way, I used the Tapatalk iPhone program to do this report and it works a treat. First post using this technology. I might try doing one from the water next time. Happy New Year Squidboy.
  12. Some rust remover (liquid) might help you as well. You just paint the stuff on and hose it away after a bit. This will tell how deep the rust has eaten
  13. Thanks for all your help fellow raiders.
  14. There is some great feedback on this topic raiders, thanks a million. By the sounds of it, if I got 8lb and buy some braid downrigger cord I should be ok. Do the fish style downrigger weights come up any harder then the round balls? Also, does the fish add any further strain on the downrigger with its downwards fins? Cheers Squidboy
  15. Hello Fellow Raiders, after purchasing a Scotty 1050 downrigger i was wondering what size downrigger weight to run. Although the item handles up to 15lb weights, I will only be trolling slowly for kings and trout. I also want to make the retrieve as easy as possible. I am considering buying on of 6 or 8LB. What size do fellow raiders run so the downrigger weight is somewhat straigh down to the bottom at idle trolling? I want to make sure the downrigger weight is picked up by the sounder very very easily. I have a dual beam sounder 83/200 khz that I run. See in freshwater it is easy cause I am not downrigging at huge depths, but at 40 or 50m downrigging, my current 4lb weight is well behind the boat. Love your thoughts. Squidboy
  16. Hi Raiders, I have a 60HP Yamaha Four Stroke. I have purchased an engine cover for the motor but I am not too sure whether I can run the engine with the cover on as it does not have any breathe hole/s. Would anyone know where the air intake for these motors is? From my look at the engine, it maybe from the top of the cowling which may suggest the cover I have purchased is for travel only rather than full time protection. Love to hear fellow raiders views. Squidboy
  17. Ok started the week looking at the weather and trying to work out when to get kings, squid or jews. With the weather telling me rain, wind and swell every single day and getting a different result when it came around I was getting kinda tired with the weather man. So last night I spoke to my dad and decided I am going trout fishing at Lake Lyell. Got myself some trusty earthworms from my back yard and went to bed. We arrived this morning, no wind, no rain and the swell was about 3mm. Perfect weather we threw some earth worms out and waited. I put a hand full of worms on a circle hook and just waited around. After about two hours I finally got a sms on my fishing rod, only to loose the fish. Was not very happy, but persisted with more bait. Next was a big fish, and I mean BIG. This fish was like fighting a salmon in the harbour, it even jumped. Fish was guided by my dad onto shore and it was a horse! Measured 58cm and I weighed it is at home at 2kilos, and was a male brown. Nothing further for a while till the wind picked up to 10 knots, the swell was about 5cm and the sun was still out with a few freindly clouds. The fish was another cracker, this time spending more time in the air than in the water. But wait, low and behold, it measured the same. Unbelieveable, me and my dad looked at each other, and say, measure it again. Yep, 58cm, but wait, it was also 2kilos at home. This fis was a female I think. Could be FR record too to to it off. All in all, my PB Brown trout was broken today, and almost re-broken. top day, given the weather in Sydney doesnt look the best. To add further information: 1. Water was slighly discoloured from clear 2. Probably fished in about 3 metres in depth (Rough estimate) 3. Spot, well closer to the park where you pay at the gates If possible can a moderator help me put this catch on fish of the month please? Hope you all enjoy the report. Squidboy
  18. Well I would be very careful if I were the film crew because the carpark area is sign posted for car and trailer. Not sure whether they have permission to over rule that.
  19. I must admit they are there. Could be the tides that are playing a big part for you but keep the spirits up. I fished 60 times before landing my first. Then I only landed one. After that I collected a stack of my own data and worked my own pattern for them. Honestly, they exist and other raiders would say so too.
  20. I use a bit of rope to a burley bucket and hang it over the side. When I am done, I just pull it up, put it in a bucket and I am done. Beauty is, I can clean it, leave it home or pull it out when the cootas turn up.
  21. Thanks Troy 1, really good advice. I hope not to catch a shark when trout fishing, but the reliability side is a plus. I went out late yesterday and bought two. Thanks for your help, Regards Squidboy Squidboy
  22. Hello Raiders. I have been looking online at the Shimano TR1000LD overhead reel. My only purpose is for a economical reel to hold five leadcore colours (In case I lose one or two when trolling) along with some good backing when fighting good sized rainbows. I cannot find one in the stores in Sydney (Unless you know of one open in the weekend) and i can't make it to Shimano cause they are open the hours I work. Just wondering if anyone uses these reels for this application and any other general feeback. Cheers Marco.
  23. Great work there Andrew. Keep up the effort on the snappers too, they look like a fantastic feed.
  24. Absolute legend! I tell you all the Internet can solve problems over night. Thanks a million
