  1. Yea, I'm not to sure about this fishing in a boat like mine but. I reckon I'll give it a go up there and try my luck at getting work as a deckie. I'll have my gph, coxswains, mechanic and fitter/machinist tickets. Surely I can useful to someone on a boat! What's the seas normally like up there. Seems like a long run 25-30k to the reef but. Do the reefs tend to shelter the water between the reef and land from the swell and wind?
  2. Do you have to head far out to catch long tails mate? What's the pelagic fishing like in Close? Cheers mate
  3. Awsome thabks for the advice guys! I really want to do bluewater fishing so I think I'll be needing a bigger boat. I really love pelagics more than anything else and that's what I want to chase. I'll have a read of that article now swords thabks for that. I'm a qualified mechanic/ qualified fitter/machinist with hydraulic experiance and qualified deckhand as well as a few other tickets. I'll be looking for work up there as a deckie to be honest.
  4. With the talk of this ban of squidding in North harbour, how many of you actually think it stops people from Squidding there? I mean it's pretty hard for fisheries to catch you squidding there lets face it. Also when you look at the life cycle of a squid and the ever growing population of squid in the harbour and north harbour you will Understand that it is pretty pathetic lock out
  5. Make sure the fad is missing and if it is, launch from sydney harbour. That's your best bet then You can just head to sydney fad
  6. Hey guys. So basically me and the missus want to move to cairns/port douglas early next year, went for a holiday and just got hooked on the place. Anyway we are thuking of living around the Palm Cove area if not we are open minded to anywhere between Carins and Port Douglas. Now what im wondering is what i can expect when I start fishing up there, im going to take the boat up which is a 4.2 runabout with a 40 on it which i fish as far as 12 mile regularly off Sydney but do i need to head further than 20k out to get into the GBR fishing for reef fish and pelagics? AS most of you would know I chase kingfish in sydney and would like to replace that with something similar maybe queenies,Gt's Mackeral etc. But would also love to do the whole creek fishing for Barra thing as well. Has anyone got any experiance in living up there at all? Thanks guys.
  7. Thinking of heading out to find that bull this weekend and was wondering d anyone had any luck on te weekend with the dollies? Cheers guys.
  8. Well done mate sounds like a good day out!
  9. Good effort on the squid mate, it can be really Annoying your hard earnt squid getting smashed as soon as you put then down. Were you downrigging?
  10. Nice! Just all through the harbour mate? What metals do you like to use I was using raiders last week and getting quite a few tailor
  11. If you set the drag correctly no matter how hard or fast the fish runs it won't snap the line, if the drag is set at say 4kg cracking pressure then it will Always crack at 4kg no matter how long the run is.
  12. Nice work on the hook up mate, what you should do really is rig your rod at home set your drag up and have your hook hooked on something and walk backwards with the rod pointing directly at your hook and slowly wind yor drag till your line pops, re rig and back the drag off a bit and te test and make sure the line doesn't pop. Then when you fish leave your drag, don't touch it at all there's no need to it's set and no matter what that fish does unless he gets you on something sharp, you know te line won't pop.
  13. I might do it tonight and send send it through to you scratchie! Cheers mate
  14. Yea I get what you guys are saying and was expecting that sort of response which is fair enough. I was thinking not so much a 'here's how to do it' but more of a here is what to are into consideration if you thinking of doing it. Seeing as I believe 90% of rescues of either rock fishermen or fisherman in a boat is due to inexperience and not being informed on the real risks.
  15. I'm actually thinking of doing a write up on inshore/offshore fishing in a small boat and the do's and dont's. Seeing as I am really one of only 2 people I know in sydney who head out as far as the shelf on a regular basis in a boat under 4.5m and do it SAFELY.
  16. I've got a 4.2 stessco skipper runabout and I fish in anything up to a 2 metre swell of it is around 10secs or more duration. If it is 2m @10-15secs normally in between the heads and up to about 2k out is a bit sloppy then your fine. You just roll over the top of nice long waves so it's not unsafe at all. If the wind is pushing against the swell or the wind is above 10knots and the swell is about a metre I can get to uncomfortable. There's so many factors that go into it and when you read the weather you really need to know how to read it properly and put all factors together to tell what it really going to be like. Then you get out there and find out the weather was completely wrong hahaha
  17. Yea I was parked on the first spot up the hill, so my trailer was sitting just past the no parking sign, someone still came and parked right up my ass lol
  18. Hey guys you need to check your trailers haven't been played with. I was at tunks park today and after coming back to the trailer someone had lifted to towball lock, if I had driven off it would have fallen straight off as soon as I go over a bump. Id love to catch the little s**** in the act.
  19. Live beaut beats everything I reckon, all Lures do is imitate a live bait. What not use the real thing
  20. I have two fuels tanks (over 200% of fuel I need for a run to the fad then 12 mile and back in) I have a big bilge pump under the floor running off two seperate circuits. I have obviously all safety equipment. New boat with low hours new motor. I've come back from 12 mile in over 2 metre swell and a southerly blowing about 15knots. Wasn't fun but not really that scary, you just take your time you'll always get back if you don't rush things and don't try and go out when it's stupid weather
  21. Hi Ian, No it's not it's a runabout shape so two seats up the front with steering wheel. I've heard of the guy who has the tiller steer and outriggers, there's only myself and my mate who I know of in sydney who head out that far. I study the weather a lot of take alot into account before going, I also have learnt how to drive a boat in less than favourable conditions. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but can be done as I have shown. You just need to have your head screwed on and have some balls basically lol
  22. Doesn't look that bad really, if the weather is as it says it is (which it never is) it will be a day of Slapping around in the boat but not dangerous, just uncomfortable. I was out 30k offshore last weekend in my 4.2 aluminium runabout and it was about 1.8-2.0m swell at 8-10secs with 8-10knots, rough old day but I still ran back in at 30kmph
  23. Hey guys I'm heading tomorrow to fish for dollies, trying to find that elusive bull! I've got a few traps marked in my phone and sounder but was wondering if anyone would like to share a few marks with me and I share mine with them? Private message of course and in happy to share intel with people as it helps save us time and fuel. Cheers mick
