hi paul welcome to the fold mate its a balancing act with bigger reds in shallow reef areas..over the years ive tried light/heavy.and have settled on 15lb mono..i fish light to medium drag..the more hurt you put on them the more they will go to ground and brick you...I have had 100 mtrs of line out on 8kg fish then work them back no problem..then the next fish will brick you..how big some of these lost fish are anyones guess..ive caught a few over 10kg..but been smoked by others.??????? I got dusted by a red on fri evening.then my mate got a 78cm next throw that gave no bother..occasionally I fish twenty lb on an overhead with big baits..im talkin nearly a whole 30cm slimy..i wont use circles..i use fairly small hooks 1/0 short shank titaniums for strips..3/0 4/0 for slimy or yakka heads pinned thru jaws..most fish are hooked in lips circles struggle to bight in such a hard mouth....we get reds in surprisingly shallow water just on dark..but I get a lot in the 30/50 ft range even in the middle of the day...I live at gorokan and have fished Swansea/norah/terrigal all my life..there are good spots near bird island and south of norah...a lot of ground holds fish but most guys drive past it goin out to texas and the perch grounds...keep watching this space if your interested in a meet greet fish weekend soon...rick

just point your headlamp up in the air and don't look down when facing water the surround glow lets you see the lures wake on surface...rick

in Tackle Talk
6455xxh blanks..i have a sabre 550 for lbg off rocks lot heavier than 540h..can fish 80lb over it..i bought 10 into aus back in the day best tuna stik off rocks ive ever seen..no one out here knows what they are as described as salmon rod on sabre catalogue..i still use a b/butt sabre for deep dropping with electric reel...rick

I have same jon..don't leave without it..bilge pumps bait pumps radio gps lights all adds to battery goin flat...rick

poppet valves generally jam in shut position with corrosion holding them..mine was jammed the other day..after long run high revs for half hr or more when I stopped and idled my buzzer would chirp..plenty water at telltale but not enough flowing thru head..cleaned it repositioned with smear of grease and no more probs..rick

in Tackle Talk
thank you very much for the reply I didn't know we had overseas raider readers..i know rod and guide products very well I owned a tackle shop in the 90s and have built hundreds of sabres and calstars..kilwells etc etc..my forte was 24 or 37 kg bent butt strokers for yfin tuna in the good old days when we used to pro fish inshore yfin for jap sashimi market in 80s..i will consider one of these rods as I still havnt bought a new one yet..again thanks for very informative reply from afar...rick

I spend a lot of my fishing time up at broughton isl..im amazed at how many people I see in nice lookin boats with lots of rods bristling out the sides but fishing in areas we call [no mans land ]...generally shallow shitty bottom where ther aren't much fish to offer..i spent many years spearing round the island..there isn't many spots round the island up to 80ft deep where I havnt been swimming at some stage..there is heaps of reef all round the island ..but..some of it holds fish/some of it doesn't.....I seeblokes fishing in areas wher I wouldn't even bother stopping..i know a lot of people just go we are here lets stop an try here..if any of you raiders wanna fish broughton and don't want to waste your time fishing dead zones..pm me and I can give you general areas to try..much better than just pulling up anywhere an hoping..i seen guys in 7.0mtr $100 k boats on the weekend fishing in places where you cant even get bait let alone an eating fish..i scratch my head an drive off just because you have the best boat n best electrics doesn't mean it shows you where there are fish...if you are spending the time n money to go to a place like this ask for some pointrs there are heaps of good fishos on this site that have local knowledge and can help point you in the right direction...good luck for the rest of the year ..rick

hey zoran the 70s are usually a desert from Sydney to above Newcastle a couple of miles and fish 85 fm to 100fm and you will fair better...all the hotspots up n down the coast are in this depth ive fished broken bay tournament in the past and always found fish straight out the front in 85/90fm the seventies are flat long and no structure or change to hold bait..a bit further and find bait find fish...rick
