  1. G'day Steve, yeah it's me I really lost interest in the game fish scene after selling the boat. I still have great memories of the point score days at SGFC though. look's like the new Ungry is just about bulletproof, kind of reminds me of Victors old boat Mungral. I did like your centre cab Ungry though, I alway's envied your fuel bills back then! I will pm you soon for a proper chat. Regard's Rod.
  2. G'day all, after selling my boat about 5 years ago I hadn't been out game fishing or to the mountain, mainly concentrating on bream and flatties on sp's. Untill yesterday when I got an invite out with an old mate who has just bought himself a little Riviera and is keen to get into game fishing but wanted some clues on how to go about it. We ran out to the bait station where we found 21* water and started trolling down sth to head for Browns. The water temp improved the closer we got and I couldn't believe that there was only 1 pro drop lining out there on such a top day. About 500 m off the mountain we picked up our first little fin on a sprocket and after boating him we started a cube trail. We picked up another 2 fin and lost a mako over the next few hours and after things slowed down we decided to have some lunch and then troll back up to Brown's as we had drifted a fair way south. We started trolling again and just as we got back to the mountain we had a double hookup on fin, with one being boated quickly however the other was a fair bit bigger and ended up getting away. As we started cubing again one of the guy's hooked up big time but lost the fish fairly quickly, Bruce our captain was christening a new Saltiga rod and reel loaded with 50lb braid and sure enough he hook's the jumbo size Y/f. After 1/2 hr we set him up with a make shift harness and rod bucket as the stick had no gimble and the rod no harness lugs and he's into it. To cut a long story short after 3 hours on this fish and not even seeing colour Bruce's back gives in so he hands the rod to me! 3/4 hr later we get colour and it was some fish, I've caught quite a few fin before up to 60kg and this thing was easily bigger than any fish I had seen, it's sickles reached back as far as it's tail. The flyer was ready with a fixed head as a back up and just as we get the trace clear of the water the leader let's go at the hook. We we're disappointed but to be honest with you that fish fought so hard that it deserved it's freedom so at 6.00pm we turned the boat for home had a beer and talked about the one that got away!!!
  3. What? Have I missed something. Must be time to get up to go fishing again.
  4. Well done Shan, Look's like a new boat. You've got to do the fun part now and put some fish into her!
  5. Sunday's definetly the pick of the WE! I will be hitting MH for some squid around 3.00am and hopefully converting them into some kingies!
  6. Congrat's on a great trip. Sound's like you still had a ball Greg even though you guy's couldn't get out wide. Any cobia with the manta's? Cheer's Rod.
  7. This adds new meaning to the term I'm dying for a fish!!!!
  8. congrat's on a great day. That was one top flattie, well done on releasing her. Cheer's Rod.

  10. Congrat's on a stella day boy's. It's all a learning curve and when that beakie comes along you'll be ready!!! cheer's Rod.
  11. I use size no. 16 bands (superior brand) you can get them from most newsagents.
  12. G'day Roosterman, I don't use release clips, I use a short length of 150lb jinkai crimped to the rear ring of the bomb with a BB snap swivel on the end. I then twist a rubber band onto my main line and put the 2 ends of the band into the snap. When you get a strike the band breaks and you are free to fight the fish. Same an outrigger setup when trolling. Cheer's Rod.
  13. Remember the AFC championship is on channel 10 at 12.00 today!
  14. Hey mate, have you checked out the eagle Seafinder 480 DF, dual freq, 500RMS, and 480X480 pixels, 5" screen, the same features as lowrance but with better clarity and cheaper. Furuno LS 4100 is less powerful and has less pixels so I don't believe is in the same league. Bias has the eagle at the moment for $469.00. A good deal if you ask me. The number of pixels do count for a lot, Just thought I would put my 2 bobs worth in. Ps I don't work for eagle or Bias.
  15. Hey Mate, Last sat main harbour 19, Spit bridge 19.5 - 20, Upper MH 21, I was surprised, it sure has warmed up over the last few weeks however don't know what effect all this fresh will have on things? Cheers.
  16. Congrat's and well done in such trying conditions! cheer's Rod.
  17. Geeez mate sound's like you were awfully lucky! May I suggest some swimming lessons if your not too comfortable in the water or at least wear a life vest. The old yaks aren't too forgiving when it come's to freeboard and swamping. Glad to hear it all worked out ok for you.
  18. Good report, at least you got a few squid and had some success. I was out Sat morning in MH and found the squid rather thin, we only managed 2 arrows. D/rigged them and missed 2 half hearted hits Got pretty wet but at least it was better than being at home. Cheer's Rod.
  19. Come on guy's, the skipper just didn't understand the concept of downrigging!
  20. Hey Carpinator, You've got to agree that it adds a bit of magic to the win; doing a rod grabber on your Mate! Congrat's on the win. Cheer's Rod.
  21. Congrat's on a great session, Those y/f will go real well with the wasabi. Look's like condition's were pretty good out there! Cheer's Rod.
  22. I can tell you that Saltrix's bombs work just fine! As good as any commercial product!!
  23. I have a mate who was cubing for Y/F one day when a large leopard seal took a liking to the 30kg kin he was about to put in the boat. As he gaffed the fin and dragged it over the side the said seal decided he wanted it for himself and tried to board the 18fter by way of the engine well. Almost sinking the boat! The angler who wont be named, fearing for his safety belted the seal with the gaff handle and he slipped back into the water! All this did was make the 300kg+ seal dude angry, who proceeded to swim around the back of the boat bellowing loudly Said mate decided enough was enough so he started the motor and moved approx 2 klm away and began cubing again. Next thing seal dudes back, so mate decides retreat is best and heads back in. This is a true story!!!
  24. Ok Netic, Iv'e got it now, I will give the treble a go and stick to the little circle up front. Anything that improves hookup's is worth a go. Sorry about the hijack Kingie master.
