Thanks, probably boring to most, but sometimes first hand accounts kind of fit into a topic in a sideline way. That page from the diary is just one of a hundred, I don't know anyone who kept something like that, for so long. He was a very keen bird watcher and mentions various species and nests, I will read a bit more and see what I can find about Windang.

Cheers. One thing I’ve learnt about progress and change is many times it isn’t for the better.

The person that wrote that was from a very well off family, when I was young, we were the only permanent residents on Barrack Point, the rest were just holiday houses (fibro shacks) built bit by bit over time, the one writing this (John Ramsay) kept the diary from early on. All the other holiday houses were relatives of his. I can remember he had this old flash car with spoked wheels, it must have been a trip in it from Burwood to here back then, no idea what kind of car it was, but he had it for decades that I remember, when he passed away I never saw it again, his kids came down to the holiday house then, and they were the ones that sold it, there was (I think) seven houses, all sold over the years by the kids, my good mate bought one and built two magnificent units on the block about 10 years ago, (just guessing)

Great read mate. Those blocks would of been a gold mine to the kids and your mate.

Thanks Donna, the photo puts it into perspective. AND I do remember it.

From where the photographer is looking north, this was what was called the back channel. A few big bream lived in it, and busted off light lines.

Now I’m being called Donna?😂😂I remember it also.Shame it’s gone.

I was only a small child but remember the boatshed well- it was always exciting hiring a boat from there. We (grandparents) had a permanent van in Oaklands caravan park and my Grandma bought a tinnie from Knock and Kirby's at Warrawong, it was the first aluminium with an 'outboard' motor down the Windang end. Grandma surprised Grandpa with the boat after she won the money on a huge 'daily double' at the TAB. First anyone knew of the boat was when a big truck pulled up and asked where it was to be put, Grandma just smiled and said to leave it on the bank next to the water and Pop (Grandpa) was stunned. The boat was left there for years in the same spot with a small chain to a Casurina tree- the logo on the side was a top hat and cane with the word 'Topper' painted onto the white hull. Motor and all boat accessories were just left in the van's annexe- only clipped up and nothing was ever pinched.

Quite often had to hire a couple of boats as well, due to extended family gatherings and friends in three adjacent vans. Very fond memories of early childhood. There were always fishers lined up standing in the water either side of the boatshed fishing for Luderick. The old boats were classic style timber with a kedge-style anchor each end and no chain, just thick rope.

You only had to row straight out from the boatshed to find fish in either the main channel or our favourite back channel

What a great read! Gramps would have thought all his xmases came at once receiving that boat.Shame people can’t leave others property alone these days.Laws are way to soft for everything in this country in my opinion.Bring back the old days.

Where is it in relation to the Windang Bridge?

I stayed at the van park about 1km north of the bridge, in the late 50's early 60's, then my grandparents moved their van to the Oaklands van park early 60's to the early 70's, by which time I did not visit anymore.

I vagely remember boatsheds to the west of the bridge.

Yes west of the bridge on the north side.I’ve put a photo up.

I have a vague recollection of my parents hiring a boat from there and taking my brother and I out fishing. It would have been early 60s and I can’t remember too much else.

@Yowiethe boat shed was on the north west side of the bridge.

    Correct .

  5. Does anyone have any tales of the history of the lake illawarra boat shed? I use to fish from the park behind the house land based.Fishing platform there now.I hired a rickety old wooden boat there in the early 90s from memory. That weed bed in front is gone to.

perhaps @Yowie or @noelm could fill me in on its history?4709DE25-5675-43A0-B983-EBE691B9E4C8.thumb.jpeg.593dfbf77783671873e727f4ad3e33ae.jpeg

    That it does Fab..

It's been a tad patchy over the last few weeks, but if persistent, there's always something on offer.

I've only been in the area for about 12 months or so, still impressed on what it has to offer..

At least you live local.I’m an hour and a half away roughly. The paper mill,Broughton creek, drifting along the islands like pig island,Numbaa islands have produced fish for me over the last 30yrs or so (I use to fish there every weekend about 20yrs ago) drifting around.

We did alright on flathead, bream, whiting and by catch of flounder at times.

We are by no means gun fishos but usually would catch a few decent fish back then.

I was there about 3 yrs ago and didn’t do too well.

    Good luck in gods country.

Late night session started with catching a few small bar tail flathead throwbacks, kept persisting and caught a keeper 40cm dusky flathead. Nothing for two hours and then wham buckled the rod into the sand a few headshakes and a run or two later landed a beautiful metre flathead. A few rushed photos, a video and fish released to fight another day. Swam off strong

Headed out early this morning. Tried for squid around Bass and Flinders - none there, and snagged the jig.

Headed up to Maianbar flats to pump some nippers, no whiting there, so headed to Lilli Pilli flats. It was around the middle of the run-up, a big tide so the sand was swirling around, but the whiting were on the bite. Drifted for the ones in the photo, the hook pulled on a few and released some small ones.

Once the current slowed, the water cleared up, the fish stopped biting, so I headed top another spot. Pulled out a smallish blackfish, a just legal flounder and a trevally about 35cm, all released.

I hooked up a little reddie, on the retrieve there was a bit hit, headshakes then the line started running. Felt like a good flattie, but did not stay hooked. I pulled in the little reddie, missing many scales, not looking too healthy and the point of the hook was inside it's head so no hookup on the flattie.

No surface fish splashing about near me this morning, though spoke to my mate by phone later, and he could see tailor splashing around North West Arm.

A big dredge is working out from Gunnamatta Bay, sucking up the sand then motoring out to North Cronulla Beach to dump it. Hope it stays a while and moves further up river.

I walked over to the pool this morning and said to myself I really need to catch Yowies fish.I went to the north side, looked in the water and said…I need to get the boat out.Went back to the south side and said….bloody Yowie.

Then I said Bugger it and did this all day.

You can have the heat and fishing until it cools down.

I don’t know how people do it in this stinking heat.

     Good stuff as always mate.Enjoy.

Can't beat Nippers for bait, I don't know why people still insist on buying frozen servo bait, when a Nipper pump can supply the best bait there is for free! I think it's just a convenience thing?

Time poor, reside far away from water, that’s all they know, and convenience are all reasons mate.

These days time poor, convenience and distance would be the biggest factor me thinks. It is for us anyway .As for yabby pumps I have had one for 30 yrs or so and I think I’ve used it 3-5 times.

Give me a nipper any day if I had the choice.

ps.We are a far cry from serious anglers or even boaters to be honest hence why it doesn’t really matter what bait we use.

  10. Why are you using them to begin with?Guide posts would be my choice.

I had a idiot at ramp when we first got my boat knock my boat off trailer causing a big gouge in hull when it scraped along the edge of trailer roller bracket.

I since put trailer guide posts on and my boat won’t move sideways as soon as the keel touches the rear roller.

The water has warmed, so the bulls are getting ready for breeding time. Why anyone goes swimming in the rivers not knowing what is swimming underneath them - I suppose if you cannot see anything, then there is nothing to worry about. 😂 Grays Point an example.

I was hoping for a bonnie for bait, but these critters on the surface amongst the tailor were bigger, they took off in a straight line. My mate was laughing at me (it was one of those nights the fish kept getting off my line) until he hooked up and it was not stopping, so he increased the drag a little then the line broke.

That’s why I swim in my pool.I can see the bottom.😂😂

    Hey Fab

I have the same issue with the Row Locks (Oar Holders) on my daughter tinny, they are right where i step out onto the trailer mudguard.

Mine take two seconds to pull out but do you think I do it?No,just climb in/out and get hooked every time.Sheer laziness on my part.

After having a read of Fabs (It comes in 3's) story i thought i would share my mishap story.

Towed the boat down to Huskinson in Sept for a holiday with the family in tow, decided to take a fishing trip to St Georges Basin,

So pulled up at Old Erowal bay ramp, which looks like a normal street between two houses, but has a nice two-lane ramp.

It was quiet and i was the only boat there so i backed the boat down close to the ramp and then climbed in the boat to turn the battery on and put up the Bimini and stow my gear on my 539 bowrider,

Once everything was ready, I decided to hop over the side of the boat to land on the concrete ramp, instead of using the steps on the back or the spare wheel on the front,

Just as i was about to launch, my brain said, " This could go really bad, you only had an ACL rebuild 14mths ago,"

Well, it did go bad and could have been really bad, as I leaped over the rear corner of my boat, the leg of my favourite boardshorts became caught on the rear cleat, the cleat ripped through my short and hooked my shorts, which cause me to violently swing headfirst towards the ground.

As I am falling my right arm is trying to grab the handrail and my left arm was going to stop me from going headfirst into the road, but as I was trying to reach out, it was caught in my loose-fitting T Shirt, thankfully my shorts held, and my head / hat just grazed the concrete as it swung towards the back of the boat.

Once i got my wits about me, i realized i was stuck hanging upside down, could not get a good enough grip to pull myself up and the best i could do was a handstand pushup, t was trying to jiggle my shorts off the cleat or off my body, that lasted 2 mins before my arms became tired. So i was hanging there wondering how long my shorts can hold 110kg or how long till another boatie comes to help me.

Just then an old bloke came past with his dog and tilts his head down to mine, "that was one way to get out of a boat",

He then gave me a hand to get down, just as my mate and his family pulled up. We all were having a laugh, but it was also a bit of a scare as it wouldn't have been pretty going headfirst into the concrete from the top of my boat which is probably 1.5mtrs from the ground.

    Was very lucky that day,

P.s I still wear the shorts with the rip as I figure i owe them for saving me, although my wife things i should throw them away as they (a) are ripped, (b) tried to make me a quadriplegic by getting hooked on the cleat.

😂😂😂I’d get rid of the shorts as that rip will catch on anything and everything now.My boat is in the garage and has metal rod holders that I’ve nearly self loaded myself into the mrs front load washing machine many times climbing in/out getting caught on it.

Last time I got caught on it I head butted the shelf the drier sits on.

You’d think I’d pull out the R clip that holds that one on and remove the holder but I’m not that smart otherwise I’d be the prime minister of the country if I were.F0FDA5D4-E137-4950-8586-B5F3A88ABBE4.thumb.jpeg.b74b8b5e17124931384eb2781ef2896b.jpeg

Funny you say this, was only just thinking whether or not to upgrade my 2011 ranger, last of the PK's, only done 120k's,  thought about it for a week or so, then the same as you by the sounds, I'll save myself 60-70k and keep driving my 1 owner for another decade..

I have a 2003 Hilux that drinks like a Samoan at a pub,has manual everything, vinyl floors, will shatter your spine over bumps and will survive a nuclear bomb I reckon.160k on clock now.I thought about new anything Ute and I simply cannot justify it and am attached to mine that’s never giving us dramas other than the norm.Brakes, oil changes, etc which I’ve done since day dot costing peanuts.

My neighbour had a Ute the same as yours and I can tell you know you’re in the same boat as the new ones are not anything like yours.Personally I’d keep yours as all new cars, utes are 💩 now if you take time out to smell the roses and really look at them/

prices have gone significantly ^^^^^^ and quality vvvvvvv big time.

As I've recently traded my ranger of the same model due to continuous repairing of faults and defects, I should have done the same.  I'm guessing "accidental" forgetting of handbrake lever

Hopefully you learnt your lesson. All the utes ain’t what they use to be including Toyota in my opinion.I think I’ll hold onto mine for the next few decades me thinks.

  17. You forgot to follow rule #1and #2.

Rule #1 Never buy Nuts & Bolts from Bunnings or ask the morons working there anything as in my experience going there for the last few decades my 10yr old nephew knows more than those incompetent clowns.

Rule# 2 always go to a good Fastener supplier for all your fastener needs as they have thousands of different types and more often than not at a fraction of the price than the rubbish sold at the green shed and much better quality. The more you buy the cheaper it is in bulk.

One last question to you @noelm….By tapping out the threads and drilling out I would of thought you’d compromise the galvanising exposing bare metal?

Great work thus far on trailer mate.
