  1. Martin is more the squid whisperer, I just got luck. Lol Mike
  2. Went for a late arvo into night session for squid and a shot at Jew in MH on Friday night with a mate. There was a little bit of wind which slowed us down but we headed into north Harbour area looking for squid. It was a bit slow at first but after dropping a good southern at the boat lifting him we eventually managed another and a cuttle. Decided to head back into MH for more squid on the high tide and managed a few arrows. Time for Jews so moved into deep water and got some live squid and strips down. Once again the Jew didn't want squid so got the plastics out and started jigging. Eventually got a hit and miss and knew we had some under the boat. Got a real good hit but missed again and next take the hook held and boated a soapie that we promptly realesed. Stuck it out for awhile until the tide was ripping through so decided to move to another spot. On the way we thought we would have another flick for squid and SP's. To our amazement Martin had out a shad style SP being retrieved on the surface and got hit by a squid. We managed to boat it as it wasn't letting go. We noticed he brought his whole gang of cephs with him and we had all these squid at the side of the boat. At one stage I put a squid jig in the water by hand and caught one. So we managed a few more which was cool and decided to call it a night. My last trip for Jew was my first time catching one on plastic so was happy to repeat the catch. The are in MH but no real size to them. Heading out tomorrow for the morning high tide to give it a try during daylight. Mi,e
  3. Great bag of flatties there. They are on the bite at the moment as we did well too but offshore on Friday. Mike
  4. I didn't see your earlier post for advice. I have and do fish MH at night a lot usually. It's a long night and only really productive a few hours either side of a high or low tide. On a typical night I would go out before sunset and get yakkas then at sunset flick for squid. I like a high or low tide within a few hours after sunset that way I can fish the prime time and be home at an early time say 12 or 1am. If I had a bigger boat I would stay put a livey out drink a few bourbons and crash for a few hours. Wake up and fish for kings or Jews again in the morning. Night time it's really on mulloway your fishing for and the odd big flathead or tailor. You must have good bait. As I learnt a few weeks ago when you know the Jews are under the boat but being picky then get out some SP and have a flick/jig. Forget fishing at the actual spit bridge at night for anything other than bait. jig the bottom around The spit for squid. Jews hang in the deeper water that is a bit calmer in the bays either side. Find a good mooring and settle in with a few rods out with different baits. I will be out for a night Jew sess this coming new moon period. I would be happy to show you a few spots etc if your out there on the water on the night. Mike
  5. Good score and a very healthy looking mulloway. Mike
  6. Mate the Harbour was the same for me last night getting 3 green eye and dropping 2 in 40 minutes at dusk. They really were hitting the jigs hard. My boat got inked bad but I managed a quick " duck 'n' weave". Mike
  7. They start to get real good eating at that size. Fish looks nice and healthy. Remember tide etc and hit that spot again under similar circumstances. That's the trick to Jews as I reckon you get like a 30 minute window in certain places. Mike
  8. Don't feel too bad as its tough going in the Harbour lately. I was out on Wednesday and lots of bait but surface fish were not in big numbers, spread out and focused on glassies. I tangle with some pretty big tailor but just couldn't get them in the boat due to their teeth. Water is cooling off and a bit dirty doesn't help. Mike
  9. Hey Dan,Mate I really just haven't been fishing much this year. Been busy and uninspired when it comes to fishing as need to find my mojo. Your report gets me interested so will hit MH leading up to the full moon. See ya out there. Mike
  10. Nice to get a MH red. I got a 70 a couple of years ago. You said you caught some stripies, did you mean striped tuna? How was the water quality after all the rain? Mike
  11. Hi Pete always good to find the Jews. I reckon it's been pretty average this year for jewies so haven't done many sessions but heading out tomorrow night in MH. Can't remember the last time I caught a good fish. Fished Harbour Wednesday for bugger all except a huge tailor I dropped at the side of the boat. Cheers. Mike
  12. On Wednesday we went to 12 then trolled out to Browns. No fish, birds or significant temp breaks. browns was deserted and only noted I think two boats in the area so we headed to long reef wide. I thought the water was better north and only hit of the day was there on a striped tuna. Saw more bait and flying fish. Late in the day we headed in closer to LR for a nice snapper with an awesome lump to his head. Hard work. I think north was better than south. Mike
  13. Nice snapper. You get the occasional big snapper in MH. A few years ago I got one 70cm. Mike
  14. Yeah stuff this weekend. Friday and into night perfect. From Saturday it will be a nightmare out there. Mike
  15. I am heading out in the morning for a few hours. I will try sugarloaf, Seaforth area and out to Balmoral area. Get bait there or centurion. Will try fresh squid caught recently with a live bait and srip bait of yakka, pillie or slimie. Might even drop a big plastic below any surface action. Will put up a report after. Haven't really fished MH much as give it a wide berth usually until school holidays are over. I will try my favorite spot at prime time. I like any deep water spots in MH on top or bottom of tide. Moon phase is excellent right now. Mike
  16. Hey andrew, Ain't that the truth. Mike
  17. Mate that's funny about the nudie beach. Gotta be careful on that front especially at night. I will keep it PG rated and say only this "don't get off the boat at night" in some of the MH parks. I was on the roof of a skyscraper today in north Sydney and watched a surface boil for about 15 minutes in a bay near the old submarine base. Not one boat went anywhere near it. Would have had it to yourself. Mike
  18. Tailor do that to livies all the time in the Harbour at night. Swim through take a chomp and keep swimming. Nice flattie. Mike
  19. RIP mate. Loved your stories and advice. All the best to your family. Mike
  20. Yeah never worth letting someone harsh up your mellow. Had an incident sat night when some random Dad and his kid motored over to mooring next to us, ran into my boat whilst trying to grab the mooring and then proceeded to tell me i should take in some of my mooring line. I was leaving anyway as had "yakked up". Said Goodbye and moved on to the squid. It is just not worth letting people get under your skin. Cheers
  21. I have always liked the Spirit and 530 is a good size. Has it met your expectations. I would be interested in your feedback via PM if you feel inclined. cheers. Mike.
  22. The smile on ya dial says it all. Well done mate as that's an absolute beauty. I am in Vanuatu chasing a big blue. I knew you'd crack one over 10 kegs before me. Happy days. You'll have to move onto a blue water addiction now. Mike
  23. Might of been something trying to eat the flattie. We pulled in an 88 cm flattie and only just got it in with a small shark trying to take it and even got a bite on her. Mike
