  1. [quote name='Robbielites' date='Dec 4 2007, 10:51 PM' post='210089 I would love to get into game fishing, but know absolutely zero. , basic tips for the beginner. Cheers. Robbie. Hi Robbie A basic tip i would like to offer in regards to when you go gamefishing is that you will find the gamefish plait to be the prefererred knot for forming a double line and is high on the list of choice by many of us... i did not notice it on the section on knots above and i presume it will be shown by instruction on the dvd's that have been recomended by others however in regards to the plait.....my advise to you robbie would be to get with a mate for a short session and instruction first hand on the procedure as its so much easier to pick up....especially the tightness required in maintaining the plait effectivaly which is allways a bone of conjecture with who ever is experimenting in useing for the first time... you will quickly become efficent with doing it with a bit of practise and has i said remains a preferred knot by most for forming a double.....i know you said basic but was unsure to how far back basic to refer to or zero info known required....if you require suggested lengths of the plait then hollow and myself or someone can post them for you... Cheers Warnie.....
  2. Chris..... mabe it will .....maybe it won't but why run the risk when you could just as easy mount it on the opposite side another reason that can quite easily happen is when you burley...... a lot of gunk and fish gizzards get caught on the transducer it only takes one little shark to get inquisitive and the next question could very well be 'does any one know if you can you join a transducer cable back together again' so if possible then mount the burley pot on the opposite side to cancel out any risk of either happening..... Cheers Warnie....
  3. Unfortunently bart....for me xmas is the only time of the year when holidays can be organised for all concerneded with family etc....but in all honesty i have found that up there to be no differant from any other holiday destination at that time of the year the best of a bad bunch so to speak.. Coff's, Ballina Yamba etc,...... i once tried Port Stephens at xmas now that's what i would call busy...... although that's the benifite of owning a boat once out on the wild blue yonder.... there is a hell of a lot of it and quite often only get to see one or two boats at best have thought of staying home in Sydney but it just dosen't seem to hold the same appeal...... the possibilities of heading south crosses my mind.....but the thought of the fickle weather throw's me..... any suggestions on good holiday destinations any one????? Cheers Warnie...
  4. Thanks for that craig best of luck goes with you for tomorrow... Cheers Warnie......
  5. Hi Craig just a quick question SGFC pointscore is held on the 1st & 3rd sunday of the month which (day or weekend of the month do) B.B.GFC hold there's ?? Cheers Warnie...
  6. So that's what happens when you wait for a boat to be built is shane one keen or mad fisho or what. that is going to lend its self to some great video footage........ either which is going to be great viewing on u tube.... or at the very least win me a great prize.......... when i show it on funniest home video......... i cant wait and have the video prep'ed and waiting will shane be haveing a bait tank on the jet ski or will the bait be hand delivered???? nudge just to clarify he said blues did he not say like outwide over the shelf blues is that his train of thought or closer to the jail grounds for little blacks.... either way it will provide no shortage of excitement when one of them rod's bend over Do they make a two seater ???????? i'm all ears on this one Cheers Warnie.....
  7. James.... Its quite apperant by most that the witchdoctor is a highly favoured teaser.. and with good cause it work's....when chasing tuna our favoured quantas coloured bibless is placed 4 mtrs behind the doctor for consistent result.......and marlin are not shy of the doctor also.. However i would like to offer a word of caution and advice in regards to the witchdocter if useing a heavy tow line then make the last 2 mtrs of the tow line out of say300 lb mono....last season gone i lost 3 to sharks (yes sharks like them also) primarily cause it was mono.....but a while back i had a nasty experiance when running one on heavy cable a mako we estimated around the 350kg mark grabbed it and became entangled in the cable it tried to jump out the water as they are known to do in responce to the resistence but was held in the process and half landed on the walk out on the boat and the cable in the ensuing mess totally tore out all the electrical connections.... to the starboard motor while in the meantime the shark literally went beserk right at the back of the boat before the cable snapped sounding like a 303 had been shot off....... in short a terrifing experiance i will never forget in a hurry hence the word of caution as i shudder to think off the conseqences it could of been for a small trailer boat... my full admiration goes out to those who fish for them for fun.......some thing for you to think about.... Cheers Warnie....
  8. James.. i am sure there are heaps on here who can give good advice and other ideas.... take what boutime said for example... at the end of the day in most respects with these types of things its not the case of doing it the right or wrong way.......... if i come across for example with a differant slant on the way you percieve it to be done .....more so because it often can be quite differant from boat to boat...what can work and were it works for me might not turn out to be as sucsseful for you....not with standing the basic concept of course... time on the water experimenting and trying first hand in getting to know what works is invaluable... take the well known saying for example "Run the lumo on the long rigger and leave it there" for me that is so true....in regards to your teaser question for me the uppermost and number one teaser is the boat!!!! hence my answer to your question would be to make sure that the spread you chose to run around it is set correctly in the right position, fine tuned to run enticingly with tried and proven colour pattern's the one above as i mentioned for example when first starting out and finding your way...... Some thing i do as im sure others do also is when i approuch a fad i get on top of it and delibretly hit reverse with both motors and turn the water into a boiling froth.....then throw a hand full of pillies in the stirred up mess along with a bait and the dollies rush in for the kill all fired up and unperterbed....that would have to be considered a form of teasing by the boat and motor's...would it not.... any way as allways if any thing is unclear feel free to ask as like you....... we are all eager to learn....... Cheers Warnie...
  9. Hi James...thought i might just give you my 2 cents worth The important part of the question "is one of them better than the other" one thing that we all hate to see after putting so much effort into hooking a marlin and i presume that is your intention is to see it all terminated very quickly by tackle failure.... make no mistake about it if there is a weakness in your tackle to exploite it will show it and after it happens and all the finger pointing and shaking of the heads as settled down inspection of what's left leads you to an answer to what has transpired...yes i have been through it many a time.... needless to say i use chaff tube...what ant mentioned about the spring is a relevant point i also can add through experiance that when pressure is applied to your trace the trace stretches.......... That little bit between the top of the crimp and the bottom end of the thimble stretches also to the point were under pressure if the fish was to do a 90 degree turn its possible for enough leverage to be applied to cut the leader clean through at that point... in live baiting with out giving to many tricks away i will say...You will find you will have a much better result if you down size your leaders......... i drop to 100 lb trace and less if need be... bearing in mind i use circles... chaff tube on the loop as mentioned and i use Yo-Zuri double sleeve crimps nbr 2 if i remember correctly applied with the appropriate power presser and a lumo bead is neatly slid over all crimps so they are not exposed.......this serves to lower the overall bulkiness and visibility factor substantially over say a jinkai crimp.......and your hook up rate will improve substatially....... sorry about getting all technical on you but if any thing is unclear and i can be off help then let me know.... Cheers Warnie....
  10. Yes they had a great run last season gone....reminds me of the perils of fishing!!!!!!!!! if having a small boat and crossing the bar is not enough i took a mate to the area and left him to his own devices he was in a quintrex 18' approx when i see him hook up to his first cobia as you can imagine the two of them on the boat were estatic the cobia was around 18kg after gaffing the fish he must of killed it in the process as it lay motionless on the gaff so while he held it there the other guy started to take a pic.... this is were it goes pear shaped for a hole half the size of his boat opened up and the head of a shark ate the cobia and the gaff while he was holding it for the pic....Sheer Panic took over as this was one of them gaff's which has a lanyard attached to it in turn to his wrist (didnt want to loose his grip) as fear took over whether he was going to get pulled overboard in the water or his arm ripped out of his socket......the actual gaff head straightened releasing all involved needless to say all were relieved we joke about it now when we see each other for he mounted the gaff on his wall with the pic taken at that moment which shows nothing but spray.....but now when i tell him to take care with the bar..he says warnie thats not what im worried about....... the shark since has grown to about the size of the one of jaws....but i can say with all confidence it was no little fella and just goes to show dont go dipping your toes in were they don't belong... Cheers Warnie..
  11. Hi all... it's fast approuching that time of the year again were at xmas myself like a lot of others hit the road and travel to greener pastures... In my case south west rocks being the destination of choice...For those of you who have experianced south west rocks it need's no introduction.... For those that are just starting out or whose first marlin alludes them this place would have to be high on the list of most likely of place's to be able to achieve such..... It never stops to amaze me of just how many fisherman with there own boat have not been able to achieve there hopes and dreams of there first marlin untill they have tried there...every xmas i have great delight in taking out my family or friends and watching with a grin from ear to ear when a rod goes off and my . or one of the kids get to to do battle with one of the little black marlin....and being within so close proximity to the shore.... The sight of olympic size bait schools with marlin swimming through them is a sight that never diminishes no matter how many times you see it....and when the 10kg outfit screams to life and whoever which one of the kids turns it is to achieve that experiance....whilst i run around getting barked at with 50 differant orders telling me were to go, how to drive, whilst trying to evade other boats,or the breakwall at the same time attempting to video the event so it can be shown for there school show and tell...... and when they have had enough a short ride to simply drop them off at the beach is all it takes so that us big boys can go back out and play..... oh yes!!!!!!! the word on the grapevine is....... it is a great place...so if you see me up there at xmas say hello....... One word of caution..... s.w.rocks does involve crossing a bar please treat with the upmost of respect and caution talk to experianced fisherman and or seek local knowledge and check on weather and conditions before crossing and if in doubt don't go..... Cheers Warnie...
  12. Sounds like that was one nice fin and a nice inutation back after so long out of it.... looked like a nice day on the water to put time in for a cube...... Just curious but this by chance wouldn't be Rod.... from "Tomahawk" the boat that was fitted with twin rockets on the back from the old days gone past at SGFC.... sorry if that's not the case and i have you confused with some one else... Cheers Warnie.....
  13. Mark Not so much about the realease as such for you can position the band on the peg were you require it to control the amount of release.......... no its about the fact that as the same principal of conection as your lures when the band is clipped into the peg and when the band takes the tension you can see through the band all the actions of the bait... you know after a while by the way it acts if some that threatens it as turned up on the scene quite often when this happens we put the boat in nuetral release the band with a gentle pull motion and allow the bait to swim off this action usually results with what ever is stalking to instinctivly chase it and grab it were as it was prepared to just consider it before hand....obviously if all dont go to plan reconnect to the peg and continue on this sort of indication is harder to judge on the roller troller were it is more likely to open either when it happens or bait activated there is minimal fine tuning or teasing on of the fish as free spooling in the hand allows and some days makes all the differance Cheers Warnie....

    Mt Fuji Gps Mark

This will put you within spitting distance 34'43.139 s 150'59.296 e Thats interesting you would'nt of heard of something that would be of interest on the grapevine have you .....hint hint..... Cheers Warnie....
  15. Whitecaps... What ant is saying there is sound advice......however by the sounds of things differant in respect to the clips i use a stainless snap on both riggers with the exception to the shottie which is plastic due to the speed and force at which it can recoil back at..... I have'nt come across what ant mention's to but don't doubt it happens i think the critical thing is the referance to "Tag lines are great IF set up right" The secret i feel is after you have wrapped the band around your line make sure that loop on completion goes through the other loop so that only one loop then clips onto the snap.... you will find the band then stretches a lot truer with the action of the lure.... twists yes but only so far and then untwists and keeps on repeating the process.... The other reason i use snaps is cause it actually adds a bit of weight to the string that anthony touched on allowing you to reach out and comfortably reach the snap after the tag line return as travelled back As it so happens i am in the process of renewing all the lines on the riggers in prep for the new season so i will take a couple of pics and post so excuse if they look a bit skungy...... Oh by the way i employ a peg for live baiting and replace it when required with a roller troller in say switch baiting for example....i use nbr 32 bands for lures and nbr 16's for livies.. anyways enough confusion from me here are some pics (i hope) Cheers Warnie...
  16. Caige..... Sensational effort well done !!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers Warnie.....
  17. Hi jewgaffer.... when it comes to thinking about what lure to have in Little Jewgaffer's collection in regards to game fishing there would be quite a few that pop up......bearing in mind little jewgaffer might not have the oppartunity to do it all that often.....so to cover virtually all species he would be likely to come across that swim and feed out there..And push changes to shove and if it has to be one choice then im going to make it the cocky in the colour combo evil...... as the most versitile all round lure...... i dont know how to provide a link but if you throw me an email address i would be more than happy to send a pic or two of a marlin caught with said fore mentioned lure for him..... Cheers Warnie.....

    Yft

Thanks Big Ken..... i can see the smile on his dial now.......... yes i missed it on Mr Magoo's report...... you might have to start tying one of his arms up to quickly teach him the differance between the right & left rigger......lol.. Cheers Warnie......
  19. Hopefully it will come together for you next outing graig in the mean time be comforted with the fact that it was happening pretty much the same way with some boats from SGFC the fish jumping on the shotgun and then proceding to windscreen wipe the ocean resulting in the fish throwing the hooks... got to love them striped marlin!!!!! Least you got to see one............better luck next outing.... Cheers Warnie..........

Hi Nick... well done on your y/fin young one .........nice tucker hey......all your attention will turn to billfish shortly.... as that warmer water draws nearer... hope to read some good reports on that side of things soon nick....... and take a camera for some pic's....want to see the smile on your dial........ talk to you on the water soon Cheers Warnie......
  21. Hi roylo just to clarify things a tad.....you will come across greater depths of water than browns...... but most likely browns will be the deepest depth of water you will most likely attempt to fish...having a sounder that will punch to that depth is an advantage obviously if you are going to be fishing the mountain...200khz against 50 khz.again depends on what set up you are running if it were to read better on one or the other ....... then you would just switch over accordingly i myself read it on 200khz easily.....co-incindently when i myself fish out way over the shelf most times i would not be reading the bottom that would be a waste of time for me..... but have it reading the top coloumn 40 fathoms of water endevouring to locate bait and this is were the plotter comes in to its own by using the contour lines as a guide........you will find that when refering to the shelf we are talking 100 fathoms the second drop off being 1,000 fathoms.......places like bermagui for example are easily reachable but out of sydney......only for the big fellas.......hope that is a bit more insight for you..... Cheers Warnie.....
  22. Hi Roylo..... ask and look around first with other boats what sounder's and transducer's they are running and it will quickly come clear to you what does the job... the depth at the top of the mountain is around 1,270 ft dropping down to around 1,500-1,600 ft on the fringe's so that amount's to around half the depth deeper drop than the continental shelf at 600ft ( 100fths) sorry about the feet for brown's...i will let some of the other guy's give the depth's of some of the other reef's......in regards to the drop?.... i take that to be after crossing over the continental shelf and when you do after an initial steady drop to approx 120 fths it is just a gradual progressive drop from there onwards......this of cause can vary greatly from what part of the coast line you do it at..... good luck on your choice of sounder..... Cheers Warnie....

    Advice Please!

Hi Wildfish Could you give a little more info..you say underfloor storage what size do you envisage the live tank to be???????.......is the boat self draining with scuppers at the moment???? i mention this as i have what you are looking for in being two tanks in total with two inlets one at the bottom which is open to the sea which fills at rest and empty's whilst underway with control cock to close if you want to retain the water...and one at the top of the tank which is fed by the pickup and pump with control cock as well.... also at the top of the tank is a 50mm overflow which is straight through the hull again bungable if required but dont need to...... of cause i have a self draining deck...... You will find as the boat climbs onto the plane or over the swells quite a large amount of water overflows out of the tank through the lid and down the deck exiting out through the scuppers....so it be best that your mate is aware of this fact in the event that his deck is on or just below the water line.... also if the tank is a large tank the weight factor might also sink the ass if thats were its going just enough to make the deck which at present is at waterline to just under with the two of you standing out at the back...hope that makes sense..... Cheers Warnie.........
  24. LUKEC.. i am not familiar with the rod holders that cruisecraft fit...but would strongly advise some sort of backing plate to help spread the stress that is applied to the area were the bolts go through the gunnel and affix to the rod holder.... its not so much the rod holder pursue were the trouble lies...(providing of course it is of at least reasonable quality) that can't handle the stress but the gunnel fracturing from the constant flexing... hence the backing plate to help eliminate this.. the other area of failure being the gimbal pin on the rod holder check it out and if it is just a pin thats been flared at the end's then remove it and replace with a s/steel bolt which i think is around 8mm from memory so just check first do that and keep an eye on it see how it holds up and Is there an area under the gunnel were a bracket of some sort can be fixed at the lower end of the rod holder by chance ??????? for helping in eliminating movement here is an enormous advantage Cheers Warnie....
