  1. Oooops sorry Daniel..... i was talking to a micheal on the phone when typing the original post does that make me dislexic????? or confused put me back on ya chrissie list all's forgiven Warnie....
  2. Hey gary if a bit closer in suits you better any were around long reef wide area will put you in with a good shot to be putting a bend in those game rods of yours.... they can be prolific around there at times ... Warnie....
  3. Gary As daniel mentioned many a epic can be recounted of the mako shark which makes for good story telling when sitting round the fire with the boy's drinking Turkey.... But on the whole gary i guess the element of danger would be no more or no less than fishing and boating in general.... With the actual gaffing of the fish being were most can come unstuck.. for as we all know they pocess a powerfull propeller and adorn a good set of dentistry... And seeing that gaffing one to not be my prime intention i use what we refer to as a "sacrifical shark trace" this consists of a single hook on a short length of wire trace of around a 1mtr which then in turn is crimped to a 3mtr length of 400lb mono making up the Trace... this allows you to be just handling mono when tracing the fish and a simple snip with the side cutters at the connection and the fish is on its way... on a side issue i once tried a piece of mako shark to eat after a mate raved on about it and i thought it to be the biggest load of crap i have ever tasted....do i stand alone in this regard ??????? or do people really eat and enjoy it......Yuck!!!!!!! Cheers Warnie...
  4. Bob... as Ray has just pionted out but we do get to hear so often of unusual species of tropical fish that regularly get caught in and around sydney... every year........so its not to far out of the realms of possibility that Jellyfish can hitch a ride down to this part of the world on the EAC... and with all these whirlpools that have been happening of late throw this into the equation and goodness knows.... for excample to name two instances of unusual occurance of note would be the large run of dolphin fish that was experianced in the bass strait VIC last year that would be pushing unusually well south i would feel.. and the reverse instance being of an atlantic salmon that was caught at the entrance NSW which most likely hailed from a damaged pen in Tasmania.... so hopefully they are just your everyday run of the mill jellyfish with a verocious appetite to fish.... and nothing more sinister... Cheers Warnie...
  5. Yes Pel and you should of seen the one that got away.....lol... No back to being serious..... apperantly bottom bashing the bottom for blue eye with that being the end result maybe hooked itself as it was taking a fish off the hook......of impaled itself as it battered a fish with it's tail........either way im only guessing but they were bottom bashing... Warnie...
  6. Hi Scon... at the recent bermi tournie a well known charter boat hooked up to what was then an unknown????? all manner of suggestion's were made on what could be on the end with a suggestion that it could even be a broadie in the end after a four and a half hour odd fight on the electric reel quite a sizeable Thresher shark was captured.of which the weight elludes me.....apperantly it was hooked through the dorsal fin which would explain the hard yardage experianced........could this of been what your mate is referring to????? Cheers Warnie....
  7. Hi all.... With this coming weekend likely to be a non event due to the weather And with eagerness levels growing in anticipation of what awaits the next trip out My mind wanders to the (Geoff Woolley Memorial) Monster Mako Tournament Held over the weekend of the 26th & 27th July run by SGFC.. A friendly tournament being restricted to 15kg line class help's add to the excitement And I am sure there will be plenty of stories that will be recounted and told of the big one that got away.. Held at a time when the mako is generally around in pretty good numbers and can be found in most known places…. but no more than at brown’s mountain which seems to Co-incide with the arrival to the mountain of in particular the frostfish.. So if a fun weekend fishing for these solid ball’s of muscle with teeth sounds inviting to you Then give a thought to this tournie..... for those of us already in the know from my own as well as other clubs need no introduction to the mako tournie with it being well Represented by quite a few raiders from on here so if you need to know any Tackle and technique questions or maybe not sure what best methods may apply then feel free to ask a question…i am sure someone will be more than happy to answer Hope to see a few of you there.. ....just had a quick browse and here are two pics of what you may hopefully expect to come across Cheers Warnie...

    Auto Pilot

Hi Andy... admit to not being able to give you any insight into the technical side of a auto pilot other than to say that i run a ST5000 raymarine and this mainly come about because i packaged it along with the Raymarine L1250 sounder i bought at that time... it does everything that you mentioned above and more and you will find them to be a very usefull tool as you allready said bring up a waypoint..press the "go to" and away you go....effortesly... after a while you get to use it for specific purposes and as well as what youv'e mentioned.... were it also comes in handy for me in particular is for Game fishing at the back end paticularly when i am under crewed.... some one will be able to be more specific but i'm pretty sure they talk to each other and with most brand's of electronic's that utilise NMEA i think i recall it is... but all the same... some one like Huey should be able to advise you better further.. also i think you will find it will come in at a lot better price than the 3-5 k you made mention here... on the whole a piece of equipment that you will find invaluable which will work in unison with your, gps, and radar........Go for it........ Cheers Warnie.....
  9. Only when youv'e been out at sea for 7 days at least dead set chris you don't eat enough to feed a sparrow..... dont know what it is but when im out fishing.... calling it the munchies is not doing it justice....a nice touch we do at this time of the year is to fill a thermos with boiling water and pop in some frankfurts then its hot dog's all round not without the tomatoe sauce of cause.... also i am partial to me MM&M's can't get a body like mine with out some sort of sacrifice.. Cheers Warnie....
  10. Judging by the lack of reponse to the question.............im guessing were all sticking to the good old slimey... Cheers Warnie...
  11. With the amount of leather jacket that seem to be prevalent out side at present it may not be a bad idea to send one of those out sporting a hook instead.. at the end of the marlin season just gone i witnessed a marlin that spewed out bulk leatheries that he obviuosly had just been having lunch on has anybody resorted to leatheries at all and had any success....????????? Cheers Warnie....
  12. Bob... would love to agree with you.......about making your own luck but!!!!!!!!!!! ..........would hate to run fowl with the gods of the deep..... so just incase..... next time a storm is brewing and your thinking of making a dash for home... DITCH THE BANANNAS OVERBOARD FIRST BEFORE DOING SO..................... Warnie...
  13. Nath.. Thats quite a curved ball youv'e thrown....when i have ever sold a boat i have allways tried to take the name with me to the new boat...ie the boat i am selling i would have it so no boat name was attached to it... however this did not go to plan though when i purchased a boat for sale a bit quicker than planned and the previous owner wanted to retain his name but had not been able to remove it quick enough so before we settled on the deal we scrubbed the H off.... so i then bought it with the name "ungry "enabling him to retain the name "hungry" for his new boat getting built this was taken one step further when a purchase of another boat by him led to the name of 2 hungry....as we are in the same club and fished the same tournies together we have caused many a radio operator to pull there hair out calling the sched's...... let me tell you... the myth being..... is we feel it bad karma to change the name of a boat that allready has a name attached to it after you purchase it so therefore change it before you phurchase it which i did and have retained that name ever since... okay was that confusing enough..?????. Cheers Warnie
  14. Hi craig... Here is a pic of a mate micheal who you may know who hails from my club with an alfonsino with a little bit more info re its habit's.... as you said they make for great eating....hope the info will be decipherable... Cheers Warnie..............Bummer how do i make the wording bigger??????
  15. Peahead... you will find it will be said to do this, and use that, with particular ways of setting a trail for them.... i myself advocate and use good quality pillies to lay down a trail and use the best quality pillie you can source to go on the hook.. so normally that would involve a box of trap bait to lay the trail with and IQF pillies for the hook nothing added to them... the reason i would not add tuna oil is the obvious one in not wanting to unecesserely invite a shark onto the scene which in the next month or so will start to become an issue unless of cause that is of no bother to you.. one word of advice i can offer with cubing that i like to do is to bring your bait the pillies up to the sea water temp... a quick way to send y/fin on there way back to were they came from is to feed frozen pillies to them..... as a rule were you first start to cube is were you stay untill the end...so make the first choice the best informed one you can... when they are around in numbers like they have been of late... the fact you break the trail and move elsewere what you burley with, and how you present the bait to the fish is of no way as critical now say as it is when the fish are not in as bigger numbers and being uncoperative...enjoy while the fish are around Cheers Warnie...
  16. bait the pillie and treat it as you would a j hook if the hook is hidden so much the better.. though you will find due to the wideish gape that it will protrude.... have no concern with it doing it's thing it will lodge in the corner of the mouth 9 times out of ten.... that tenth time being in the gut... do away with crimps and tie the hook on as far as fishing for y/fin goes.......with a standard loop crimped with chaff tube at the top end of the trace for connection to the swivel.... my traces consist of 80lb ande as t standard faire dropping to 60lb if the fish are being tentative..otherwise straight through to the mainline if they are being super shy...... the way the fish are at presently they are not shying away to easily..... Cheers Warnie.....
  17. Hi Arman... as well as rab's getting back to you try 9/0 Owner ssw in line circles.... you will find by the time you are able to think about going to strike on the fish he's allready hooked himself and hit the afterburners..... Cheers Warnie...

    Tuna Gear

Browney 1 i can tell that you are itching to get out there and into them this weekend the short answer to your question and roffo's is sure...they will both handle the fish just how many pieces of the rod you want to go back home with and how sore you want your back to be will be up to yourself's Good qaulity game outfits are the normal preferred option of choice and simply going down in line class to up the ante is the norm when a more sporting option is sought after which i'm sure you all ready know..... but saying that if your not well endowed with all the game gear then sure throw whatever your best able to muster up with in reason off cause and i cant see why the 1200fa and the beastmaster would'nt do the job it goes with out saying off course.... that obviously some outfits are going to adaquently handle the job a lot better than others and you will find in most cases it will tend to put more hurt on the angler than what's being put on the fish so whilst there are plenty of fish out there at the moment eager in being caught and you dont get to experiance it all to often then go out and join in all the action and have a ball with whatever you can muster up.... but when it turns back around again to when the fish are not as accommodating resulting in maybe one chance for the day........then the very best of what is designed for the job would be the way to go... Cheers Warnie...
  19. Hi Scon The answer to your question lay's more in the rod than the reel.... thats were your leverage and lifting power will come more into play.... a reason why a short stroker for example on tuna is so popular... stick to the known saying....Pump and Wind..... Cheers Warnie...
  20. Hi nath.. how ya going... I am not into camera's and all so excuse my ignorance.... but are you able to fit a poloroid lense to video camera's at all?????? so as the colour of the fish in all it's glory just under the surface is able to be seen a lot better.... as in the blue eye video maybe it could of taken the glare visible out of the equation.... just a suggestion nath... maybe one was allready been used... or it can't be done??????? all the same...... keep up the good work.... any thought's been given yet as to jumping into the water at all and doing any underwater footage.....if so and your keen... i have a spare spot available for the upcoming mako tournie... should provide some good underwater footage for you and i will even bring a spare pair of undies to hand out if need be......... jokes aside looks like your having fun..... and that's the name of the game... Cheers Warnie.....
  21. Hi james... are you adjusting to the change up north yet????? if any shark comes up your trail to look over proceeding's it will be a fair assumption that he will sniff out whatever is offered to him .... as a general rule here in sydney and this mostly aimed at mako's is i try to set the bait at around the depth that try's to keep it in touch with the approximity to the burley trial....ie the further you send it back the deeper you may have to set it at....but saying that rarely would i set the bait deeper than 6mtrs.... combined with sacrifical shark traces that's just my method james i am no dedicated shark nut....just do it at the back end of the season when it tends to get long in the tooth and i am over catching y/fin at that stage......but it seem's to work for me... Cheers Warnie....
  22. So sad to hear of the death of another fisherman on saturday and i also would like to extend my sincerest condolances to the family and friends...... The conditions on saturday out at sea were deterioating fairly quickly with the swell begining to rise and was quite confused i was working an area along with another half dozen boat's about 4 miles over the shelf east of bermagui when at around 2 pm the call came from tournament Base that due to current weather conditions that the day's fishing is cancelled and to stop fishing.... were upon that call to the best of my knowledge and to what i could see all the boats in my vicinity and myself included made there way for home the wind at that stage was gusting at around 33knts.... when pulling the boat off the ramp into the carpark i heard the situation on the radio unfold.... as best as i could gather the last of the boats coming back home came across the blokes in the water... apparently the boat had gone down around 12.30 ish and there had been in the water for around 2 hrs at that stage.. It was encouraging and a word of praise should be said though....... for the boats that upon hearing of such over the radio that turned around and went back out in the condition's to the co-ordinates given to help in searching for the crew member still missing at that time...everyone was sad when hearing of the the awefull news.... Warnie.....
  23. Well the time as come tomorrow to travel the goat track down south and hopefully i will be able to report some y/fin news when i return back.... after watching some of the boys unload some solid y/fin tuna weighing up to 54kg at the club tonight... caught wide off browns in the cube trail..... as got me chaffing at the bit and raring to go....hope a few at least will hang around long enough untill i get down there........ Cheers Warnie.....
  24. Hodgey.. The weighstation is on the same side 100 mtrs up from the ramp in the harbour directly adjacent to a big white marqee with banners erected... you won't be able to miss it.... Cheers Warnie....
  25. Smokinjoe.. infinite wisdom hey....you could be opening a can of worms with that question... assuming you are referring to a trailer boat as i guess it mainly comes down in the end to purely what you prefer.... so in answer to your question to useing a bent butt as opposed to a straight butt is that for me a bent butt feel's awkward.... and a nicely balanced outfit with a straight butt for me feel's so much better..... so with stand up tackle then being my number one choice and preferred option......... and it were me.... i would buy the boat and get rid of the chair giving myself more room out the back in the process.... Cheers Warnie....
