    Melbourne Cup

Anybody pick Viewed?? It always seems to be some outsider horse that breaks out at the end. Bloody close finish though
  2. Thought i'd would do a poll to see what eveybody's favourite Braid is. I know that it may vary in one person from one line class to another but you can only choose 1 so choose your favourite line for your favourite type of fishing. Cheers Josh

    Monster Of The Deep

Yeh those guys do look pretty American. Hodgey you always seem to pick up on things like this
  4. Nice work on the blackies and Surgeons. Thats just infront of my school there. Didn't think you could go on those rocks...guess you'd need to, to get a surgeon out of there. Josh
  5. Mate most companies make baitrunner reels but in most cases when you hear people talking of them, they are referring to the Shimano Baitrunnner series as they are probably the best. As you said they have the feature of being a threadline that can go into free-spool and the tension of the free spool can be adjusted just like a normal drag can. What this does is enables the fish to pick up a bait and not feel much resistance at all in which case it'll probably start to scream off with it, this is when you pick up your rod wind the handle quickly and strike so that you set the hook in the fish and by winding the handle engage your normal drag setting. I don't fish beaches much so i can't really say but i suppose you could use it, it may run a little bit in the waves, not really sure though. Josh
  6. Well when we don't get any squid we resort to trying to get yakkas/slimies but i all is to no avail thenwe just use lures. Never really bothered to go ask anyone else for their bait unless i know them, even then if its squid then firstly they'll want to use it as bait and whatever's left as Calamari. Thats atleast what I do. Josh
  7. What a great fish, well done. Lucky being able to catch something like that whilst cleaning your boat.
  8. We went up to Hawaii in July, it was great fun. Definitely recommend going there!! Josh
  9. Daniel you must be one of the unluckiest guys alive to not get a kingy with that much persistence. Definitely get your squid early. Then look for some birds working the surface as this can often indicate fish feeding aggresively with them being Kingfish a lot of the time particularly this time of year and the next few months. In this case throw 6 inch sluggos at the edge of the schools or a metal slice or if they are not staying on the surface long troll some rapala cd-9s or xraps around the areas they have been feeding. Research some harbour and middle harbour wrecks as these are favourite haunts of kingies and fishing them on the early stage of the outgoing tide can prove very successful and enjoyable. As said it can pay off to go out on a charter, i've been on quite a lot in the harbour as i'm good mates with who i think is the best in the harbour with kingies and jewies. Wait a little bit longer until the rats move into the harbour well and truly and if you keep doing what you have been + what other people have told you then you can't fail. Good Luck, Josh
  10. Yeh they do lose their effectiveness when the tail is lost but as Dicko said it can be fixed. Just heat up a knife with a match or lighter then hold it in between the plastic and broken tail, squeeze together and remove the knife then cool it to make it set. Alternatively you can put in a little corkscrew and then attach a shiny metal willow leaf that will both flutter and give off flash. Cheers Josh
  11. I like the CD-9 in Pilchard pattern, they are my favourite for most pelagics and kingies in particular. Also had great succes on the X-rap slashbaits. Seem to love them cast and trolled. Josh
  12. Nice work Geoff. Things definitely are looking good. The water's warming up and so's the action both in and out of the harbour. This summer should be absolute Mayhem. Well done on the PB, strange about the other one though, pretty annoying when things like that happen and you're not sure what did it. Josh
  13. Great work mate, good fish on a lure. What body of water were you in? Harbour, Hacking, Hawkesbury?? Cheers Josh

    Braid

Mate i can't say on the Platil millenium but i have used regular platil braid before and found it pretty mediocre, definitely better lines out there imo and i'd say there are probably better and cheaper lines than the millenium one also.
  15. I did think it looked photoshopped at first look, particularly with the big catepillar scoopers, hard to say for sure though.
  16. Bad luck Humesy, can't stand the feeling when people around you get into them and you don't, just thinking what the hell am i doing wrong? At least you got some action though. Which beach were you at? Cheers Josh
  17. Nice work mate, must be a good little adrenalin rush catching kingies in a canoe. If you got another one like your PB you might get a bit wet We never seem to do that well at Seaforth when baiting tied to a buoy...maybe downrigging makes the difference?? Anyone else find this Josh
  18. I can definitely relate to what Red is saying. Most of the small Daiwa's have a medium retrive rate usually 4.7:1 which is a pain in the ass when you're trying to wind in the slack line after cast when ripping lures back in for pelagics. Stradics have a higher gear ratio i believe and would suit this task better imo. Josh
  19. I don't target and catch flathead regularly enough to be able to make a good comparison between lures but have definitely found as slinky said that scented lures outfish those without the scent. Gulps of course work well even without great tail action i've found lures like the minnows and even the 6 inch worm has been very successful in catching flatties. The squigdy x factor scent that you add to the lures i think works better than the gulp flavouring, and although you have to apply it yourself, i think it produces more scent and lasts longer in terms of still giving off a good smell longer than a gulp would.
  20. Well done mate. They sure make a great feed, i reckon in bread crumbs or batter they are the best eating fish, makes me hungry just thinking about it
  21. Hi Yarraone, You can go for squid all along that right hand shoreline of Rose Bay and then further downstream around the face near Nielsen Park. Use a good quality squid jig like a daiwa, yo-zuri or yamashita if you have one in about 2.0 size in a pink or natural brown colour. Let the jig sink over the weed bed and give your rod a few gentle lifts when it has sunk for a while, this is when you will know if there is a squid on your jig, then qind the little slack and let it sink again and repeat the process. Give each spot 5-10min and move on if you can't find any. As for the kings it is definitely worth keeping an eye out for birds working on the surface as this will indicate fish activity. So you'll need a light-medium spinning outfit rigged up with a metal slice or 6 inch sluggo to throw around the edges of the school. Or if they are not hitting the surface regularly enough, try trolling diving minnows around areas where you find bait, birds etc... When baiting its good to fish over wrecks and around markers, do a bit of research to find some wrecks within the harbour and plan your outing so that it can be adjusted accordingly. Use heavier gear 30lb+ preferably braided line, with a running sinker onto a swivel and a meter or so of 50-80lb mono/flurocarbon leader, with a single or i like a 2 hook rig of 6/0's. Use a variety of baits (of squid) e.g. put out a small live one, a head, a strip and the guts. Good luck, let us know how you do. Josh

    Polycraft Boats

We have a friend with a polycraft 4.3 or 4.5m open boat but he uses it for a rental place he owns and only has 15hp which was cut down a bit further i think so it really struggles to get on the plane in that case. They are quite heavy boats but are a very good platform in terms of stability and space. Cheers Josh

    The Ball Game

Changed it like 7 times and got bored. Got to leave it against the wall then quickly click on it after you've taken your mouse off the side of the screen and go to click on the ball

    Tackle Hates

Yes thats pretty annoying. Also when lures you buy don't fit in tackle boxes you already have, uncalled for tangles in the lines which leave you wondering how on earth it happened. Sure there are many more though....

    Polycraft Boats

Hey mate, We have a poly boat made by Triumph Boats. They are mighty strong and have some pretty good designs. We have the 170CC which is a 17ft centre console and it is quite a good boat, definitely worth a look. Put Triumph Boats into a search engine and you will find their website. What size are you looking for and what are your main uses going to be? Josh
