XD351 Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 G’day Raiders, just another quick Hawkesbury report and that’s right it’s more flathead 🤣🤣🤣 I hit parsley bay ramp at dawn to launch for a trip up to moony moony area and with a good hour and a half of run in tide left I decided to try the tiny creek that runs into the bay behind Long Island . I started out wide of the creek mouth and worked my way towards it on the minn kota fanning out casts of a Gobblers plastic . It wasn’t until I got right to the creek mouth that I got my first hit but a mid 40cm flattie spat the lure at me just outside the reach of the net and this would be the first of four fish -all low to mid 40cm models to do this to me Anyhow I continued up the creek and finally got one in the net - it was barely lip hooked so maybe the others were the same ? Only one fish on the way up the creek then a lure colour change to a bloodworm colour for the return trip which yielded two undersized fish . I then tried the mouth of the bay between kangaroo point and Long Island with the same lure and two bait rods - both the half pilly but with one running a half pillie and the other a garfish fillet but this produced a donut . I then tried a drift from the northern end of the road bridge down river to the northern end of the rail bridge which produce a solitary small mulloway. I was now starting to run out of tide flow so decided to do a drift from moony moony creek out into the main river which produced all of the fish except the one I got in the creek , it seemed that nothing wanted the bait as the first couple of fish were caught on a plastic but then something changed and the bait rods provided some welcome action and the biggest fish of the day . Overall I probably landed a dozen fish , dropped a few and kept the two smallest ones but only photographed the fish over 40cm . If it has a lure in its mouth or next to it then it was caught on that lure the rest were on bait. I also ran into Zoran at the ramp - awesome to finally meet you mate ! 15
Isaac Ct Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Nice report again, got the flatties all sorted out. Well done. 1
Yowie Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 A few nice flatties for your efforts. Bait one hour, lures the next, not much you can do except keep a hook in the water. Have not heard from Zoran on this site for a while - might be in holiday mode. 🤣 1
Larkin Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Your system’s working XD! another great catch of flatties! 1
big Neil Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 I just love these in-depth fishing reports XD351. I would love a good feed of Flathead, one of my favourite eating fish. Interesting that so many fish were barely hooked. Not usual behaviour for Flatties. There must be something about the lure to explain it. Keep up the good work, love your reports. bn 1

Thinking back I could have upped the hook size a bit but didn’t have the same weight in a larger hook . Another option may have been to Texas rig it and I could then pick and choose hook sizes and weights - something too keep in mind for next time ! Edited October 12, 2023 by XD351 1

Still got to find that big mumma though ! The real test will be using the system in Botany Bay ,Sydney harbour and other areas where the current is a lot less . 16 hours ago, Yowie said: A few nice flatties for your efforts. The great thing about drifting is i can have two rods set out with different baits and flick lures at the same time. Funny thing is a few weeks back it was the garfish that seemed to work . Also the rod with the white lumo sinker caught the bulk of the fish and even when I changed the other rod that had the green lumo sinker to pilchard bait the white sinker seemed to get more fish - might try a white lure there next time ! 17 hours ago, Isaac Ct said: Nice report again, got the flatties all sorted out. jenno64 Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Nice work on the flat chaps! The size in the photos produce the best sized fillets in my opinion:) 1

Excellent report again Ian ... true raider spirit - full of details and specifics. Like others have commented you have the Hawkesbury flatties worked out mate. It was also a pleasure to meet you at the ramp and to put a face to the name. I told Maria on the drive to Parsley Bay that we may bump into Ian (XD251) - so after we actually met she was convinced it was all pre-arranged 😂. Anyway, looking forward to your next reports ... btw your poly is a work of art, perfectly set up for the bays and estuaries 👍. Cheers Zoran 2

Little_Flatty Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Some nice flathead there @XD351. Looks like your theories are working. My neck of the woods is only starting to wake up now for the flatty fishing. Hopefully in the coming weeks I'll have more to report. 1

Pickles Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 (edited) Great report Ian, great you caught up with Zoran at the ramp ( his taking a few decades off you it seems- XD251?). A really good effort on the Flatties - seem to be plenty around at present and you nailed ‘em and always sharing and caring with your info - well done. (We all know the pain / frustration of fish spitting the hook just at the boat). Edited October 14, 2023 by Pickles Spelling 1
