  1. Just drifting dead bait. Works great in summer!
  2. ah, the mother in-law fish strikes again. Sergeant Baker...
  3. Thats definitely a good way to target them. The alternative is to stick a small pilli on ganged hooks out under a float. The By-Catch is Bonito, Tailor and Salmon.
  4. Lovely long tom. Just make sure you stay away from the business end of that thing. From personal experience, IT GOES RIGHT TO THE BONE!
  5. I was thinking that for a while... Maybe a Saros 4000 with 7kg Drag would be better? It can take a 4000 comfortably because thats what i have had on it for a year or two now. If it would be used for light live baiting and trolling for small kings, tailor and salmon then how heavy should the braid i use be? 20lb? 25lb? 30lb?
  6. Well done mate, i also got my first decent jewie up that way only a month or so ago. Its definitely worth the effort of fishless sessions prior to the capture. Sugarloaf is a very fishy spot. Some monster Bream have been pulled from there at night on unweighted strips of mullet. Keep at it and that big one will find your bait again soon!
  7. Its hard to choose. The Okuma Salina 2 5000 has generous line capacity and 13kg of drag! Matched up with 30lb braid, you can stop some big fish with it! The Spheros is still in the back of my mind though!
  8. Can't go past a squidgy 100mm Bloodworm Wriggler for flatties. For Bream, either a smaller 80mm bloodworm wriggler or 3" gulp minnow in pumpkinseed. As previously mentioned, it sounds as if you arent feeding the hook on properly. Take the time to get it right and it will swim a whole lot better!
  9. Hey raiders, need to upgrade to a new reel for my 6-8kg rod. I use this setup for trolling and livebaiting. Had a look around and found a few options: - Shimano Spheros 6000; $185 - Okuma Salina 11 5000; $199 - Shimano Baitrunner B 6500; $169 - Abu Soron STX 60; $150 - Pflueger Crank 50; $169 Any other suggestions for under $200 would be great! Cheers, Tom
  10. Yes, its actually true. Got 2 there on dusk one night while fishing sp?!?! Decent size too!
  11. After Heavy storms, wind, rain etc the Bigger jewies come out to play. Up the north coats people crowd the breakwalls at the entrance to rivers as they soak a livie or chuck out a big sp/hardbody. We don't have too many breakwalls down here but these conditions should still stir up a bite. Also, mullet ABSOLUTELY hate the wind. Don't bother with them at times like these, even for poddies in the bait traps...
  12. Thats the problem. Gets pretty packed but there's still plenty of fish to be caught!
  13. Not at all. One of the fishiest spots in the harbour. You get Bream, Flathead, Whiting, Trevally, Salmon, Tailor, Kingfish, Jewfish aswell as a few bonito and frigates in summer. Even a few big cobia have been caught near here.
  14. A mate caught a 14kg model in February on a live mullet. He was fishing landbased on the Seaforth/Manly side of the bridge. Late afternoon. Always a few Nice Bream and Flathead to play around with while you wait!
  15. Jew- Tide change on dusk or dawn is prime. New moon aswell. Flathead- Second half of the run out or second half of the run in. Moon doesn't matter a whole lot. Bream- Run in tide. I like a full moon for some reason. Always seem to pic up 1kg+ fish on it Whiting- Second half of the run out. Moon doesn't matter too much. Overall, i would pay more attention to the tides and time of day rather than the moon. Match the ideal tide for the species being pursued and find a time where it coincides with late afternoon or early morning. For some (Jewies, Bream) night can be great too!
  16. Yeah, i know about balmoral. The thing is it will take a VERY long time to get there via kayak from the Roseville Bridge....
  17. Both great reels. Not really that different. They should handle just about anything that you come across
  18. Yeah i guess they are pretty small but there's no legal size on them
  19. yeah, good luck mate. Might have to get one myself
  20. Beautiful Kingie, Landbased firsts and pb's are the best!
  21. Thanks for that mate, the yak hasn't been released yet so probably a month or two.
  22. My favourite rod for bream is definitely my Shimano Jewell 2-4kg. Great rod. They have stopped making them for some reason but they still have online stocks. I got mine for $139 but they are cheap online now! Something like $99. Next favourite is the the raider as previously mentioned. Have a look at them. Great value!
  23. They're actually bigger than they look. When eating Leatherjackets you remove the head which is a significant part of the fish.
  24. Haven't actually received the yak yet. Pre ordered the new Hobie Pro Angler . It has the foot pedal system so my guess is maybe an hour and a bit flat out. I'll mainly fis the waters around Bantry Bay and Sugarloaf though... How did you get your yakkas? Jig, unweighted bait or little hook/sinker rig? Cheers, Tom
