  1. Never done a fish head but done a couple of deer head/antlers & you need to remove all the soft tissue. Boiling it out is the easiest time & cost effective, then scraping & or jet blasting the flesh(not to close, could be to much for small fish?). This might interest you Baz https://www.instructables.com/id/Preserving-Shark-Jaws/
  2. Nice! Do you mean Sydney offshore reefs?
  3. Ain't that the truth. What works one day may not the next. Guess the morel of the story is to be able to change tactics quickly.
  4. I was in a boat, south side of the headland. Yes Bear island has a bommie right in front of it & can be very dangerous. I have seen 8ft barrels breaking over it when the conditions are right & at the same time in a NW the swell hits the rock platform so not recommended at that time to be anywhere near there. I've only just started to target them in the last few months really but only from a boat. If you have a tinny @FishyMcFishFace it would open up more opportunities I think but hey I get how just walking in & having a flick can be way less time consuming & easier at times. We might have to catch up for a session one day.
  5. I was at the mouth of the bay but it was about 1/3 of the way of the run out tide at 6.30am. Would have preferred run in but that was the time I had to be out there. I have caught them at different tides & time of the day but that murk atm is like dirty black tea. Will hopefully clear out soon. Thanks for the tip
  6. Let us know how you go Had the same thing in mind on Tuesday but couldn't get any squid. Water quality still very average.
  7. Great effort Dieter, good to see the persistence pay dividends for you On my 1st visit to your back yard showed me it does look like a great bit of coast line in close!
  8. I dont beach fish much but I wouldnt use a running sinker as it will just tangle up your line in the current. Generally I use a 3 hook paternoster with popper about 14 to 16 inches above it when going for salmon or mullaway. In saying that rigs can vary depending on what your chasing. If your going for whiting or bream then you need to use a rig suitable for that.
  9. Yes pretty much the point I have been trying to make. Not a hypothetical a reality scenario-so your on a platform& have a rod in your hand, you need to wear a life jacket, someone comes up & stands next to you with his kids & dog & starts having a conversation, no lifejacket needed. If everyone(corporations & government) is going around promoting inclusivity & fairness in policy then how is this a good example of doing so? Seems that fisherman are targeted where it should really be a blanket rule for all! IF I were a rock fisherman which I am not I would absolutely wear a jacket, but it should be a choice, especially if others aren't required to be wearing one! Their should be a sign in these area saying 'no one past this point without a life vest' if you are going to be fair dinkum about it!! Just my 2 cents.
  10. Cheers, no my PB FH is the one in my avatar which was 80cm.
  11. Rebel, If your going to call me out in being wrong then maybe you should tell us about your background plus personel involvement & submit the environmental studies that the info is based on. Also are you suggesting there are no dip whits in council & local government 🙄 It goes deeper than that to a federal level 😉 I am not saying rock fishing is not dangerous, yet if you are going to target one individual in the same area then same rules should apply to all. Like I said no municipality has the balls to do that!!
  12. The way I see it a beach bases surf popper rig is as you describe, a popper in a 2 or 3 hook patenoster rig. In saying that if you use a popper lure & throw it into white water to catch something like a GT or similar well you that's also a popper. Open to interpretation really.
  13. Tried oysters, fresh & partially salt cured for not much. Pippies, well that's another story, great bait.
  14. @SquidMarks & Rebel. Its some council HR dip whit looking at a satellite image on a screen & drawing a line with an E pencil not having ever been to the locations!! Its no different to the twits who close public access gates on crown land & say you cant perform a back burn or cut trees to protect your property. That it what your hard earned bureaucracy gets you. What should happen is- there should be a line drawn in every rock face in the so called restriction areas saying 'no thoroughfare beyond this point without a life vest' Fisherperson or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But don't upset the whole general public, just the fisho's 🙄
  15. I hear you Scrathchie, you just have to believe that if you put in the effort its got to pay off sooner or later right 😁
  16. Went out today with the idea of targeting kings after seeing the recent encouraging threads of @swordfisherman & @nbdshroom & test out the whole poor mans downrigger live bait set up. In the water by 630am & didn't really know what to expect after all the recent rain but the water quality was still very average to say the least, dark brown colour, lots of weed, rubbish & random stuff still floating about. Straight to my regular place for yakka's as the sun rose & no amount of burley was working, tried for some squid at another location but came up donuts which doesn't help the goal. So without the livie's decided to do a but of a flathead drift with the chute out as the wind came up a but more that expected & got a really nice hit, came up about 1/2 way before spitting the SP, a quick retrieve & throw straight back into that area around the 8mtr mark & it hit again, had to be the same fish the way it hit, this time I gave it a bit more of a second hit to set the hook this time. A nice 60cm flatty that as I brought it into the net & just over the boat spat the SP then jumped out if the enviro net & slap the hell out nearly every forward panel of the tinny. Just managed to calm it down enough for a quick pic on the mat before sending her home do what she does. Used a squidgy pro black & gold prawn wriggler(cant remember the size but think it was a larger one. Stopped off at the 3rd runway on the way home & tried some micro jigging & larger SP's but no takers. 2 fish only for the day, still if I could get just one 60cm flatty every trip that would keep me going 😀 And actually thanks to modern tech & being able to zoom in on a picture I am going to claim a 609mm fish 🤣😜
  17. @Jpatane as Donna mentioned lots of good info on here & as I was saying in Donna's tutorial thread you have to look at all the info/footage you can to get an idea! If you have a look at the video that James posted you can see where these guys are fishing in Sydney harbor, you can even see the naval vessel going by in the background in proximity to the heads. You have to do some work & research yourself here. If we all said come here to this location & you will catch squid then shortly after there would be 100 people there & no room for you or me!! Sure we can all benefit from some guidance but at the end of the day you just have get out there & put in the yards!
  18. Great info & tips Donna. Through doing my own research like watching some commercial fishing shows, watching raiders videos & YouTubes I have managed to now started targeting & catching squid in the bay. Being familiar with an area you can get the general location & where to go from the footage. You just need to be observant 😁 I have actually got a couple of new places to target now just through noticing squid chasing my SP when fishing. You just have to have a jig ready to go
  19. Sounds like a good bit of fun 61! Shame they don't stretch a few cm, Id rather have YTKF sashimi over bonito any day 😁 Next trip Ill pack the soy & wasabi I recon if you get a few days use out of those bargain bin buys you've made your money back
  20. @P_Konrad thanks for throwing all those up, it will certainly make it easier for fellow raiders now
