  2. G'day Fishraiders

    This is my first post.

I would like some information please?

I have planned a fishing expedition to Swains Reef with some enthusiastic fisherman friends, and the problem is what fishing gear should we be taking?

The intended method of fishing is, casting egg beaters from the dory boats for pelagic fishes, and fishing the mother boat by trawling and bottom bashing.

As none of us intended fisherman have had no experience at Swains Reef we would like to purchase an over head reel and egg beater each?

If any one has had any experience fishing in these conditions your replies would be appreciative

Your feedback on the type of reels and tackle would be appreciative?

    cheers Miskie

    Hi Miskie

I'm with stewy and the others that are indicating to go with the best.

The one thing that will help you make a decision on quality and price is how much you are looking forward to this trip and what your expectations are.

This trip could be a once in a lifetime trip.

So it's my opinion you should try and find that extra $$$ and purchase the better quality gear.

This should help reduce the chance's of your trip being ruined for the sake of a few bucks and cheaper quality gear.

And if you decide to do more of this style of fishing then you will alway have the best gear for the job.

Just one more quick thing, remember that if you purchase right the first time. This will save you buying it again. So maybe you should also go and speak to tony or pete, both are site sponser and would be more than happy to help you.

So now with that out of the way i hope you have a good trip and hope to see some good reports here on fishraiders.

    cheers

  3. Hi there raiders

I was just wondering if any one can tell me if the blue eye and gemmies are still around or are

they more of a winter fish.

I am asking this because there has not been much talk of them alate and i was thinking of

heading out to brown on the weekend as the weather is looking good at the moment. But do not

want to waste a trip out there if b/e and gemmies are not there.May just hit the fads for some dollies and

the b/b head land for some kings

    cheers

  4. Ok Raiders

I thought I would ask the question. How many fellow raiders are now using electric reels and winches?

It would be good to find our what type of reels and winches you are using and for what style of fishing.

It would also be good to find out what are your thoughts on their performance.

I know their will be many that think this is a lazy way of fishing,

And their is going to be many that will have some other colourful description on this topic.

But this is not why the topic has been started. I myself am a user of electric reel's and would hope that with this topic we may be able to help others that may be heading down this path to make the right choice for their needs as we have already made that decision.

Ok I am the proud owner of two-tanacom bull 1000; both are spooled with approx 900mt of 80lb braid. These reels are used in water beyond 200mt. I have used these many times at browns (400 to 500mt with 3kg sinker) and have had double hook up on both green eye sharks and deep-sea perch. I have found the reel's to handle this situation quite well.

I have fished with other raiders at browns running both reels of one battery , done approx 10-12 drops each, ¾ of these drops having fish on the return trip, so most of the times on the return trip there was load on the reel. The battery seemed to handle this fine as well.

I have also caught the bottom of the mountain :ranting2: a few times as well and let me tell you the reel had no problem bending the 24kg penn rod it was mounted on. My deepest drops has been in excess of 700mts

I still have not yet caught a blue eye or gemmie on one of these reels but would like to know if there is someone who has and how the reel went.

I am also the proud owner of a marine power 3000 spooled with approx 1600mts 125lb braid mounted on a 37kg custom built rod, :yahoo: but since its purchase some 3 months ago the weather has been crap so have not used it yet.

    cheers

  5. hey raiders just wondering what i could use to mould lead for my down rigger weight? anyclues?

    thanks guys

It realy is cheaper to buy them.

Contact one of the site sponsors and you will see that for the amount of bombs you would need the make to cover your cost of setting up its just not worth it.

    cheers

    bob

  6. Mate the best advice is to get a marine sparky to do it for you.

Cop the cost and get it done right the first time!

As you say a fire at sea is not good...

    cheers

    inhlanzi

    should take inhlanzi advice.

I have 2 mag20 and at max load just one of these alone will pull 40amps.

so a sparky would be the best person to see.

    cheers

  7. Not happy @ all.

    post-3509-1202034256_thumb.jpg

  8. I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy, (explaination = look on the bright side)

Bob, I think it's great that even though you have the items for sale you're taking the time ensure everthing works

Shows the character of person. I hate nothing worse than going to buy something and the seller saying "you just have to add this, bend that and it will be fine"

If its that easy then why didn't they do it before selling?

Anyway getting back on topic, Bob it sounds amazing to see two downriggers fully automated, I have a single manual type and I feel like henry the octopus trying to keep it tracking against the bottom. You could run your system single handed! :1clap:

    Thank’s Gone_wishin

I could not have put it better. When I go to sell something to someone, I first of all want to know if it’s going to work the way that it should do.

I truly do not want to sell my riggers, :( I love them and I want to keep them after my trials in the bay.

But if it has to be to help me sell my boat and get the upgrade I want then so be it :05:

I will miss them. :( But they will be something that I can replace in time and the one thing that I will replace.

I would also like to say that I have had the manual rigger as one lucky raider can testified as he bought it from me at a good price. But once you have gone electric you will never turn back

But i suppose the best thing of all. I have found the answer to my question. That it is possible to run two different brand sounders at the same time and get the exact readings on both sounders.

    Cheers

    bob

  9. Ok kingyfisher and bluefin

For your information the sale of my two downriggers have no bearing on the original posted question.

The question was do ( two transducer work on the same boat and at the same time ) and in my opinion yes they do and work fine. And as stated in the post the riggers worked fine.

Now for the sale of my riggers if you looked hard enough you would have seen that they are for sale on fishraider as well, and the riggers are only being sold for one reason which is clearly stated if you had read the post 5.4mt boat for sale

I have seen no where in the site rule that stops me from reading and being a member of another site

and I don't think it would ever be the site owners intention.

I have not tried to hide the fact that I am a member of more than one site except for the fact that I do not mention ( other site names ) on fishraider site as this is against the site rule, and I think that is quite fair too.

This reply is in no way intended to start a slanging match but to clear up the misunderstanding of what the post was all about.

    cheers

    bob

This post was submitted to me by Bob first and I have allowed Bob to clear the air

  10. G'day Raiders,

I'm about to Name my boat, which got me thinking.

What have other members named their boats?, i know some people have

some funny ones so please, lets here em'

    Cheers Etho

Well lest's see i call my boat honey, darling and many other things but for the name on the boat i would like to put LUNAR TIC but that's me a little screwed up. :tease:

But there is one thing that stops me from doing so.It is supossed to be bad luck to change the name of a boat so this could affect the resale.

    cheers

    bob

  11. Ok raiders

Here is the result of my attempt of running two transducer and two different sounders.

The reason to ensure that both system where accurate is that i want to run two electric

    cannon downriggers.

When the riggers are hooked up to a hummingbird sounder with a Cannon link control unit it allows you to set them to do a number of things in auto.

The main function that interested me was the ability to set the downriggers to track the bottom.

So now after all the input from raider and huey the decision was made to fix the other transducer to the boat and head for Botany Bay for test run.

Ok it’s now the Sunday the 27/01 and the weather is not all that good on the bay.The wind was blowing hard from the north west and the bay was choppy (and I mean choppy) and the drift was about 5kms to the south west.

So with all this in mind decide to first test that both sounders where reading properly

by switching one off to see if the depth changed, well this was not the case. both sounder read no different when either one was switched on or off.

So now it was time to try the riggers out with both sounders running.

First test was to set rigger to track 20 feet from the bottom whilst we were drifting across the bay at 5km.The rigger tracked perfectly, if the sounder said 50 feet the rigger counter read 30 feet. I could see the bomb on the other sounder at 20 feet from the bottom, and this was over a variable depth range.

So now happy with this it was time to put the only slimey i had caught on and try for my first kingie on a downrigger.

This was going great as started trolling from just west of mollies point which was about 12 mt of water to to the east of mollies point which has a depth of 19 mt and the riggers where tracking fine. :yahoo:

So pleased with all of this was not paying a great deal of attention to what I was doing and managed to get to close to another boats anchor rope and well you can guest what happen from here. That's right 300 feet of cable with 10lb bomb still attached hand drag back into the boat and two hours to sort out the mess. :05::mad3:

So conclusion is that the two sounders work well together but if running self tracking downriggers do not get to cocky as it can cost you a lot of time and effort.

So next test is schedule for a much more focused and less windy day

    Cheers

    bob

  12. Sorry to hear the weather was not all that kind to you, and your daughter did not get to truly enjoy the pleasure of fishing.

But 10/10 for stickin the week out.

I would have lost the plot after 2-3 days of the shitty weather and head back for home .

It is also good to see there are still reports of fresh water fishing comming in.

    cheers

  13. Good on you mick and your new toy.

Reading this post has got me thinking that this would be a great new fourm topic ( raiders and there new toys )

This should be a topic for what raiders are buying, this will help us all understand what is on the market and what other raiders are getting into.

This should not have to be new, it should also inclued used.

    cheers

  14. Hi Bob, good question, and I do not know the answer. I would be guessing and say that you should be fine especially if the transducers are on either side of the outboard, but hopefully someone who has fitted two different makes of sounder can answer this.

What I would do mate, to be certain, is take the boat out with the Humminbird in the boat but not fitted, and at rest have the Humminbird transducer in the water at the same time as the Navman is going and see if you get the bottom on both screens.

It will be interesting to see what you find,

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Thanks Huey will give this ago.

    cheers

  15. I have 2 transducers at the back - quadbeam and widescan. They are connected to the same unit so I don't run them at the same time - have a switch on the dashboard. No issues.

prob should have mention that they are two diff system one being a navman and other being humminbird

    cheers

  16. Hi all

    Quick question.

I have finally received my humminbird 717 and my cannon link to run both my mag 20 downriggers.

    What I wanted to know.

Will running 2 transducer off the boat give me false readings.

Does anyone have 2 transducer running, and do both sounders work ok.

    Cheers

    Bob

  17. First of all well done on the catch

Even a bigger well done on releasing her , it is good to see that there are still fisho's out there that are happy with just a few snaps

I know its some time hard to release a trophy fish.

But its fisho's like yourself and others that will help insure that there are fish for the next generation

    remember every little bit helps

    cheers

  20. Hi all long time viewer first time poster on this great site.

Headed out onto Tilligerry Creek 6.00am this morning dropped of witches hats then fished a couple of oyster racks.

After about an hour got one just under legal bream and just under flathead.

Checked the hats 2 crabs in first hat  things looking then 1 in each remaining 4 hats. Called it quits about 9.30am back in time for breakfast.

    Cheers

    Welcome gibbo63

Even if the fishing side did not pan out that well, you have to be happy with 4 crabs.

There are many of us that spend hours and hours on the water for zip.

Well it's not realy for zip, it's for what we enjoy doing and the fish are only a bouns.

Once again welcome and hope to see more reports and pic's

    cheers
