  1. Hi all

so I am moving house and the new place has a 6m x 6m double garage.

my boat on the trailer is 7.2mtrs, so i have to put the boat sideways across the garage to allow the garage door to close.

there is a slight maybe 10deg upwards slope on the driveway but the garage is flat, level and smooth concrete floor.

once I get the boat most of the way in the draw bar is still on this slope and although I haven't tried yet, I think it will be a hard task to muscle the boat into the correct angle.

so I thought I would buy either a electric jockey wheel or the Ratchet type. I did also think about go go jacks for sideways movement.

has anyone used either the elect or Ratchet type of jockey wheel and is there a good brand you can recommend.

boat weighs 1,400kg loaded I think.

I was caught out by one bloke enquiring about a boat I had for sale.

The more I spoke with the lady the more I realised this guy was just after a free local tour in each town they stayed at. They had already been in many boats joy riding up the coast from Melbourne. They even had a list of boats lined up for the trip on up to the Whitsunday's. I asked what vehicle he was planning to tow any boat that he buys with only for a reply he'd never thought of towing a boat. By this time I couldn't wait to see the back of him and couldn't believe I been part of his east coast free tour plan.

It would have been about then I would have faked a Break down and just floated around for a few hours, especially if I had a Rod and some bait or SPs.

  3. I respond to low ball offers with, don't you want the motor or are you bringing your own trailer?

Which they usually reply? What, isn't the trailer included, I say not for that price.

    P.s

i add heaps of photos from different angles, inside and out, I make sure the item is the only thing in the photo and if I have to I move the item so the photos are worthwhile.

the amount of boats on Gumtree with one crappy side on photo taken on a IPhone 3 in low light is amazing.

i sometime think I could buy the boat or car, clean it up and take some great photos and sell it for a profit.

  4. This is where having a decent sized engine matched to the boat also helps, Having power to get out of situations rather than having to compensate for a underpowered boat.

I searched for nearly 12 months before buying my boat, nearly bought a few but was determined to buy once and not settle as I have been caught before settling and then spending $$$ upgrading or repairing and then having regret that the money I spent was more than the newer or better boats I didn't look at,.

    P.s

I will look at boats for you and you can look at properties for me, must be in Sydney, have room for me, 3 kids, wife, 2 cars and a 7.2mtr boat/trailer.

    Prefer a pool too.

  5. If I fish around Gladesville its catch and release, but its a great spot to teach the kids, if I am close to the Harbour Bridge I would consider keeping it, If I am at Taronga Zoo / Clifton Gardens / Balmoral we will keep a couple for a feed but still mostly catch and release.

With the little one they usually get tired and ratty after a few hours in the boat, so I never bank on doing much fishing and like I said with the family on board a few hours fishing is the best you can hope for. Its all about sight seeing and swimming.

  6. Hey PC747

i also fish from a bowrider and usually 3 kids in tow (5,9 and 10) and have done so since the youngest was 3yr.

i like to fish around Clifton Gardens , Taronga zoo and for further down the river I fish Cockatoo Island and east of Gladesville bridge.

half the fun with the kids is touring around the bays and catching bream, if it's hot then we duck around to Balmoral for a swim.

the family prefers to go up to the Hawkesbury and pump some nippers and chase bream and flathead, but mostly to cruise around and find a beach to pull up at and have a picnic and a swim. There is also a coffee boat that does fresh coffee and ice creams which the wife loves.

Thanks for the replies raiders.   Yes this one has a fresh coat of paint.   The owner claims he's had her for 19  or 21 years only selling becuse of a new 7 meter boat parked in the driveway.  800 hours on the donk with full service history.

I like the Caribbean as well but concerned that for a 5.2 meter fg boat she is a bit underpowered with a 70hp new yamaha on the back. She's a trade in at a dealer.

Over the next couple of days the wife and I are looking at a few boats and I'm trying to research each one as much as possible.   Several are no brainers like a raider 166 which there is plenty written along with a Haines Hunter. Btw I  do have some of Jeff Websters used boat mags and using them as a guide.

I definetly want a stable platform and at least in my mind dont wish to venture much past the heads on good days. I have limited experience in a 475 Bayhunter Quinny that my dear friend who just past used to own.  Difference being he was 20 times the skipper I'll ever be.  Thank you for replying..

    Bear

Can you have a chat to the dealer and see if they would do a engine swap with something else in the yard, my mate did that they swapped a 50hp of a alloy boat on to the Fiberglass boat he wanted and put the 40hp from the fiberglass onto the alloy. The engines were similar in age, which made the cost about the same.

It cost him a few $$ more but was cheaper and easier than selling the outboard and buying another 2nd hand one.

Just a question you could possible ask.

  8. I have a 5.42m bowrider with a 115hp and it has the same hull as the Runabout, it takes 7 in estuary waters but is a bit crowded if people want to move around,

it's very stable and great for fishing 3 guys max, 1 out front and 2 at the back.

if the wife and sister come along they sit at the front and listen to the radio and watch the world go by.

we recently took it to Nelson Bay and Jervis Bay and went Dolphin / Whale watching, the kids loved it as did the mother in law.

i also have a 3 person ski tube and knee board which are very popular and a lot of fun as well as find private beaches for swimming and picnics.

we fish 95% of our time close to the heads and in all the bays and anywhere in the Hawkesbury and Jervis bay.

i would have no problem going offshore on a good day with 1 mate maybe two if they were experienced. I would have the bow cover on hand if the weather got a bit rough to help with wave splash.

only a serious fisho would go off shore in crappy weather as its no fun.

so you should work out what you are realistically going to do with the boat and factor in you will be most on your own or with 1 other, as friends never come when you want and the weather is crap when they want.

    thats my 2c worth.

  9. I do 90% of my fishing and boating in the Harbour, Hawkesbury and Jarvis Bay.

i also usually have 1 or 3 kids with me, plus the wife or a mate.

i bought a 5.4m Bowrider as it give me the room to stow all the kids gear, seat extra people and it's great cruising the rivers and I can fish 3 guys in three locations.

at rest we can have two people leaning over the side and the boat hardly leans over.

it does bounce in the chop but I just slow down a bit.

i have been caught in 30km head wind with a 2.5m swell and driving rain and it was back braking at anything over 15knots. But that is rare.

i have been outside a little about 2km on a good day and it was fantastic but you pick you days and unless your a hardcore fisherman you don't want to be out there on a sloppy day as it's not fun.

So the alloy is great for me to launch Solo, pull up to a beach in the Hawkesbury or Jervis bay and let the kids go for a swim.

i drive onto my trailer and away I go.

Do I like fiberglass yes and would love the comfort of a half cabin yes, but for my boating lifestyle the Alloy bow rider at this point is my best solution.

As Fab said what, where, how and who is how you will answer your dilemma, just remember your mates won't come out as often as you think or they say they will cause life catches them out all the time.

  10. I bought my boat from the trailer boat show at Homebush Olympic park. It's normally in September and has some great deals.

it was more suited to my budget that the Sydney Boat Show.

Edit: just read the Trailer Boat Show is not on in 2017. Due to the Syd Boat show moving back to Darling Harbour.

  11. Hi bear

    thats what I did

    1. Bought the DVD from the RMS $18, they also have a online version you can buy, I was there so just bought it.

    2. Went out on a friends boat 3 times and ticked off the checklist and he signed my log book.

    3. Did the online test heaps of times and twice on the day I went to sit the test.

    4. Paid the $45 to do the test (Passed)

    5. Gave the log book and paid my 1yrs license fee.

    done and dusted.
