  1. I'm not the most experienced blackfisherman, however I believe the statement of "The best bait is whatever works best on the day" rings true for the weed you're using. Sometimes they'll prefer the light, almost fluorescent green, other times they'll prefer the darker weed. Sometimes they'll take a preference to whatever weed has the stronger smell, and vice-versa. I don't think there's a "best" weed for any given situation, and it's best to have a mix of baits with you on the day. Maybe someone with more experience will tell you otherwise, in which case ignore me! Cheers, Wellzy
  2. My Indonesian friend and a lot of people he knows call them Aliens. Freaky looking little buggers. I've hooked a blackfish by the doctor too, dropped the fish and kept the parasite on the hook.
  3. I've always called those 'bomb' sinkers. As for catching yakkas (or livies in general) I find tiny pieces of pilchard on each hook of a sabiki rig works well. Cheers, Wellzy
  4. Some beautiful snapper mate! Top effort to land one on a destroyed jighead! Cheers, Wellzy
  5. I have consistent success around Dangar Island in the hawkesbury for bream, get in close and anchor up. Cheers, Wellzy

Would you believe it, Johns was right on the mark... J.T. out for the season due to shoulder surgery. http://www.news.com.au/sport/breaking-news/surgery-rules-halfback-johnathan-thurston-out-for-season-world-cup-in-doubt/news-story/3dd22b4a15ff8b76d3a643d95f93931a

I agree completely with you frag about our attack shutting down. I also agree with what Joey Johns had to say post-game... Their defensive line had a weakness in J.T. with a shoulder injury, and we didn't capitalise on that. I feel the result should've been vastly different, but we played sloppy in the second half. Bring on game 3!
  8. I don't know about soft plastics, but I'd be opting for Ecogear SX40s or Cranka Crabs around structure for bream. Cheers, Wellzy
  9. I use the same bait! However I use much smaller hooks, size 6-10. Cheers, Wellzy
  10. This is previous ID of an eastern frogfish, also caught from a central coast wharf. I'd be inclined to also say eastern frogfish.
  11. I can't help you on the beach front, I don't really fish off the beach myself. However I have friends that do, and they consistently catch salmon! Cheers, Wellzy
  12. Tailor and salmon are pretty active off the beaches in winter, and the blackfish pick up activity in the estuaries too. There are certainly winter options for fishing the salt! You'll also certainly pick up snapper/morwong/leatherjacket over reefs and flathead offshore too. Cheers, Wellzy
  13. If this is the same video I watched recently except shortened... The extended video he actually got dusted 2-3 times before he managed to keep one! That's certainly a catch of a lifetime. Cheers, Wellzy
  14. Good on ya mate. Braved the weather and it paid off! Cheers, Wellzy
  15. The only downfall of using droppers under a float is that your float is being used not only to suspend your baits, but also as a strike indicator. With a dropper loop, if a fish strikes your bait, there are two separate sections of line that take strain. Because of this, your float will have a delay between the strike and the float 'bob' as the indicator. Cheers, Wellzy
  16. +1 for putting cuttlefish in a bucket, they make a right mess of your esky and any fish you've got in there. I caught one a touch smaller a few weeks ago (weighed 3.5kg), and it inked twice in the net, four more times in the bucket. Kept the hood to cook up, got the rest in the freezer How big was the baker? Had an est. 60cm baker take a live yakka a few months ago. Cheers, Wellzy

    Home brew gurus?

Hey Tara, If you're doing homebrew and want to try something completely different, try making a mead! Neil's mention of honey made me think of bringing it up. A mate of mine does homebrew and breaks up the beer with a mead every so often. I'm a huge fan, it's a bit sweeter than beer but also tends to be a bit stronger. This site here has some cool recipes! http://www.stormthecastle.com/mead/mead-recipes.htm Cheers, Wellzy
  18. 50cm!? That's not a pig, that's a HORSE! Great work mate. Cheers, Wellzy
  19. Hi Arthur, check out the Fishraider article on Jewfish. http://www.fishraider.com.au/article/how-catch-jewfish/ Cheers, Wellzy
  20. Hi raiders! I'm getting married in October and we plan on having our honeymoon in Queensland, staying in Mackay. I've been given the green light for one day fishing, and I'd love to hit up the Barramundi! Anyone have any recommendations for a barra charter near Mackay? Happy to drive a few hours. PM please! Cheers, Wellzy EDIT: Extending this to include all fishing charters. Barramundi charters seem very limited here (almost exclusively Lake Proserpine within a reasonable drive). Has anyone done any reef, queenfish or spanish mackerel charters?
  21. I did see you lot show up in Waratah Bay. I was too comfy in my warm clothes on the boat though. And you scored more fish than me in the bay too (big fat donut), no hairy bites at all! Also dropped a half-decent tailor on the surface.
  22. Well done Jani! It's great to see how differently fishing is done in other areas of the world Cheers, Wellzy
  23. Good to know they're coming through! I'll be up soon for a fish Good bag there Tysh, the guys up at the Entrance got me onto my first blackies! Cheers, Wellzy
  24. Hey raiders, Spent the long weekend in Albury over the weekend. Leading up to Albury nationals in March next year, they host 2-3 comps to reorganise their arena to hopefully balance the win % across the three bases, and bring everyone together in a more social environment than the national competition. Our Parramatta site sent two teams down for this, which consisted of our 2017 national 6-player team, and 4 rookies to give them a taste of the skill level of some of the other sites in the country. Unfortunately for us, the Albury site uses an older system that we are unfamiliar with (if anyone knows much, for reference - We use Helios Pro, and Albury are using Nexus Gen1). The IR radius of the Nexus phases are much narrower and less forgiving, and the timing is also quite different. This proved extremely difficult for us to showcase our ability in the arena, but was also a great learning experience. Out of 19 teams (the largest pre-nationals comp ever held in Australia - and bigger than the Finnish nationals last week), our teams placed 17th and 18th, pushing one of the local teams into last place. In the end, we didn't perform as well as we'd hoped. However this was partially due to playing on Nexus, and also because we decided to split our experience across two teams to introduce some rookies into the competitive scene. Because of that, and the great atmosphere created by all of the competitors, we had a really good weekend! That is, until we hit the traffic on the Hume Hwy on the way home on Monday. Cheers, Wellzy
