  1. Gary can you weld alloy? There is a guy in boating with a broken skeg looking for help?
  2. Pel you are right on the money, The filler rod used when welding is soft and the alloy around the weld deforms and softens as well. The proximity to the bearing carrier and retainer bolt is the concern here. It is definitely repairable but to guarantee the job this is how would do it. Remove all internals If you have access to a lathe I would turn a spigot to go in the bearing keeper plate area to reduce distortion (optional) Remove the paint well away from the area to be welded sand area (to remove containments) and vee grind out mating surfaces. Preheat the casing to approx 250-300c for an hour (this soaks the heat and reduces distortion when the Tig torch applies 1000+c to the area to be welded. Often with oil contaminated things like gear casing the heating in the oven will cause the oil to film on the recently cleaned area, so you quickly sand the previously cleaned area and mating surfaces (hot). Then weld it. Regrind any areas you feel may have weld issues I then put it back in the now switched off oven and let them cool slowly. When finished dress up the weld and I would put a helicoil insert in to the lower keeper plate bolt if the weld got anywhere near it in the end (as it will soften the bolt hole and it will strip and the worst time otherwise) As mentioned previously it may be cheaper for a new housing. Some may think the above is over the top, and indeed it may but as I said at the start, I would grantee the above repair and is how many expensive components on Aircraft, race cars and other things have been fixed. Good luck and I feel for you, I have pulled my boat out of the garage twice and left the skeg down! I now have big note on the front I leave to remind me.
  3. Thats the trick, the crack is right near the bearing retainer bolt hole and will not be a straight forward weld job. It would be wise to price a replacement as well
  4. Yarra Not sure about later on, there was a lot of freedom sports around (more than i have every seen) which island was pullbar, the larger one near the channel with some campers on it?
  5. That’s awesome, my neighbor collected aircraft parts (mosquito) when I was that age I spent many hour playing in the parts of the cockpit he had done up. I think it set in stone my love of aviation. On the 380 cockpit, I think it would take some getting used to flying in the left-hand seat and using you left-hand on the joystick
  6. Get a map of the marine park as parts of the creek are of limits and the markers are not the clearest imo. If launching from the Myola ramp DONT repeat Dont have a single vaulable thing in your motor car. It has a reputation for thieves sadley.
  7. Nic All the current crop of motors are very good. If to consider new, You are right to ignore the marketing crap and look at the facts and talk to the dealers. Things like twice as many parts mean nothing if correctly maintained form new. Motor cars have involved from the old overhead valve Holden red motors to the current twin cam motors with 5 times the number of moving parts and the current motors are considerably more reliable and last longer. I think the optimax uses a long belt system that if fails renders the motor useless, I would say belts are a higher cause of failure and faster wearing than a well lubricated camshaft. Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha did not get where they are by making crap motors, neither did Evinrude or Mercury. As advised talk to Craig at Huetts and any other dealer you trust. I personally like Yamaha products for many reasons I will not go into here, but if I were to replace the motor on my current boat it would be an Etec. Because of the weight saving on my older hull, I like the proven technology (Etec may be newish but the basic Evinrude motor is well proven) and I would trust Craig to do it all right and set my boat up perfectly. Remember it is not just a case of bolting the outboard on, there is motor height, prop choice etc etc. Good luck PS as mentioned above be very wary of used outboards and fourstrokes, as you do not know the service history, a poorly maintianed outboard will be a headache, and fourstrokes will cost more if major components need to be replaced, IE a replacement clyinder head for a fourstroke will cost 7-8 times more than one for a twostroke
  8. Sorry to hear about the boat, least you got a few good fish. We got buggerall for the weekend. I think i passed you heading North past Wangi on Firday whilst i headed south? The boat looked familiar.
  9. Dont forget the artificial reefs on the south end of the lake, am going to give them a go as well. I will be up over easter as well, 5m quinnie freedom sport, raider sticker on the tail. Will keep an out.
  10. All the best and a quick recovery Byron
  11. FYI This is what i did to allow the Furuno to read better at speed, works to about 30kmh then you start to lose detail. I have just lowered the Transducer further.
  12. More stellar business decisions by our state government
  13. Congrats Pelican, your posts are always good value and i am amazed how many things i learn reading your posts. Thanks
  14. FYI Furuno insist on a fuse on the neg side or you void warranty!, something about getting a dead short to an alloy hull and current killing the sounder through the earth. Question above has been asked before, most pro installs of lowrance they do not install the switch just the correct rated fuse. If you want to run the switch heed the excellent advise given above, your neg should be nowhere near that switch
  15. Hi Mate The three boats you have mentioned are all good performers IMO. Going outside in a Bowrider is as safe as a centre console and with a bow cover more so and plenty fish offshore with CC. Yes if outside is all you did i would go cuddy as well, but it isnt, try fishing branch ridden estuaries in a cuddy it can be a pain. Only you can decide what is best for you. For mine i would look at the Stacer 525, not as flash as the Quintrex FS but i think better in other ways, they also dont hold there value as well, so should be well in your range. I am finding with the Quintrex bow design as my three children are growing that boyancy in the front can be an issue when totting around in a swell/chop, no probs on the plane, and great ride and steering. But overall I rate the FS as a great vessel and it has given us a couple of years of fun. For what its worth our sponser Huey had a clean 525 with V4 90 Johhno some time ago, dont know if he still has it

    How Much Oil

I thought yams ran around 100 to 1 ? I can't think what our yam 90 would use as I top up oil as I go, but it certainly does not use a tank of oil per 100 litres
  17. Stimulus Payment Info. "This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format: Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment? A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers. Q. Where will the government get this money? A. From taxpayers. Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgin. Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set or some such thing, thus stimulating the economy. Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ? A. Shut up. Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the Australian economy by spending your stimulus cheque wisely: If you spend that money at ******, all the money will go to China . If you spend it on petrol it will go to the Arabs. If you purchase a computer it will go to India . If you buy a car it will go to Japan . If you purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan . And none of it will help the Australian economy. We need to keep that money here in Australia . You can keep the money in Australia by spending it at garage sales, going to a cricket match or footy game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer and wine (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are the only businesses that may still be owned by Aussies.

    Sounder

I would like a dollar for every time my sounder has found fish that i couldnt catch! Sounders dont catch the fish just show where they are.
  19. Suzuki is imported by H****s in Brisbane. Suzuki, Yamaha and other Japanese manufacters would buy in the Yen not $USD. The Yen has had a much greater fall than the USD$ also Yamaha being corperate in Australia rather than a dealer would be able to stave of price increases far better than H****s could.
  20. Hey Pel any time you want explain further about the different types of GPS format and how to convert I would as am sure others would appreciate it greatly. I also struggle at times, the marks for the marine park in JB did not go in correctly and recently saving the marks from my GPS in the freeware program "easy GPS" worked but trying to enter further waypoints in to Easy GPS have failed to work due to the different formats.
  21. Thats quite a varied list and suprising it doesnt include two of the most common hulls in Stacer and Quintrex. I cant speak for all the brands but i think the bluefins are good value and well built and now (new only) come with 4mm bottoms. Good luck and remember buying secondhand get it well inspected and/or deal with a dealer you can trust. I suggest you take a trip up to Cowan and see Huey (craig) at Huett Marine and have a chat about what you want and your budget. He is very open and honest with information about all boats not just what he sells.
  22. Hi All Was going down to JB this weekend, forecast is for 23km+ winds from the eastSE does this mean the bay will be unusable? Any education on JB winds would be appreciated.
  23. Ceph any good fabricator should be able to make what you want, you would just have to give them a drawing with your design (doesnt have to be CAD or anything, just a clear set of dimentions) If you are looking for someone to design, make and install it may get more difficult. I would suggest you gather images of tanks you like and do drawings to fit your boat to give the fabricator an idea. I will PM you a couple names of people i know.
