  1. To land a fish in that situation first play it out so it is buggered. Then point the rod tip down and reel in so it's about 1.5M from the tip. Place your non dominant hand just behind the first runner & gently lift it just enough and sweep it in. Or buy an old school ugly stick & do what you like.
  2. Nice fish, that's a humdinger of a silver trevally. Must be a light rod if it snapped skull dragging that up. Looks like you might have got the rod too vertical (high sticked it), judging by where it broke.
  3. I got a mid to high 40's one once on a Halco 30g slice that it ate using bream gear. Wasn't nearly the fight that the next one put up that I foul hooked through the tail. There was a large school of them bunched up off Barrenjoey Headland. Couldn't work out why they were so thick until we went to net it and a Tiger Shark at least as big as my mates 14ft tinny followed it up. We left after that.
  4. Nice bag of fish Isaac, a good feed there. Pity about the Kingie, they have a habit of getting away.
  5. Nice couple of fish on lures. I was watching about 2/3 of a large whiting happily swimming around a while ago. It was completely missing it's tail and most of the wrist. Was well healed so the injury obviously happened some time previously. Wind knots can be a pain with light braid/lures.
  6. Spent 3 nights at the Marina Resort. Nice place to stay. Fishing the Clyde was difficult with a lot of run despite the modest tides. We concentrated around the changes and got a few undersized flatties and 3 good sized fat bream. Quite a few nice fish were being cleaned at the ramp by people with boats who had headed offshore.
  7. I used to launch from Careel Bay boat ramp and tie up to a vacant mooring out towards the entrance. Used to get heaps of kings using fresh prawns or whitebait on bream gear. The trick is to let them run out into clear water then put some pressure on. Still lost heaps.
  8. That's a beautiful fat Flatty, well done. Good luck in Lake Conjola Yowie, my favourite estuary that should produce the goods at this time of year.
  9. Well done, getting dusted like that makes me come back for some revenge. A Leatherjacket like that makes good eating and they are easy to peel.
  10. Thanks Frank, might give it a go.
  11. Sounds like an entertaining session, I've never seen nor heard of rabbit fish before. Are they tasty? Looks like you need to respool your reel.
  12. Booked a nice villa at the Marina Resort for 3 nights next weekend for a fishing getaway with my brother. Planning to fish the south side of the breakwall near the entrance to the Clyde & probably hire a tinny to go a bit up river. Any local knowledge as to what is biting?
  13. Back in the day when I did pre-dawn starts I used a red and a green Cyalume stick cable tied to the appropriate sides of the Yak.
  14. I found that time (early morning or late arvo) seemed more important than tide. Obviously be wary of a rising tide/swell. Dee Why actually seemed safer as a lot of the ledges are higher above sea level. I must admit that I didn't enjoy the scramble, always suss of sandstone giving way and would hate to fall metres onto dry rock. In saying that it is a pretty well established path, just look for the handholds. Dunno how Wazza used to do what he did, would scare the beejesus out of me.
  15. I used to fish that spot at South Curly a fair bit. Also the ledges south of the piccy at Dee Why. Had to grab the handholds cut into the rocks to get around the headland. Like any rock fishing, common sense has to prevail. I lived at Dee Why at the time so it was easy to cruise around and go back home (or fish Narrabeen Lake, Manly Dam etc) if conditions were at all dangerous. Unfortunately a lot of people drive a couple of hours from somewhere else & will fish the rocks at all costs. I saw a lot of very risky behaviour in my time there.
  16. You could try around Careel Bay. I used to get a few on the Yak, not too far from shore.
  17. https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/politics/nsw-government-to-ban-all-fishing-of-blue-gropers-after-shock-killings/news-story/3ae374d2921ef8b821ff4b2f40d6808e First I heard about it but here is an article. Animal Justice Party behind it which is not a surprise.
  18. Yup, try being a hunter if you want to get persecuted. I actually gave up spearfishing for line fishing as it is much easier. Spearfishers generally "release" before they pull the trigger. No bycatch if you do it right. Hopefully we have the numbers to head this stupidity off.
  19. You need a fishing fee receipt (licence) to take anything living from the ocean in NSW by any means, including spearfishing. No licence or registration (or age limit) required to own a speargun. I used to spearfish when I was in primary school. Very unwise to fire a speargun on land. I've heard that the recoil is most unpleasant.
  20. Great catch in a nice part of the world.
  21. Nice catch. The ring is a gasket for something. I can't imagine how it ended up around a Jewfish????
  22. I use both freeze spray and scabies cream. Both work well. If I am somewhere without them a knife with a really sharp point works. Gently push it into its face and they generally back out. I have heard that a dab of Vaseline (or similar) also works as they can't breathe. I've personally never tried it. I have been bitten on the thigh a couple of times by decent sized ticks and had symptoms similar to the OP's. Couldn't get jeans on the next day due to swelling. Even an open wound attempting to ulcer. ASAP after a bite I wack down a couple of antihistamines & then 1 a day for the next few days. Antiseptic cream for the wound. I've had literally hundreds over the years and seem to be mildly allergic. Luckily no MMA, forced veganism would kill me.
  23. Nice catch, well done. If you are trying different spots just be careful of the sanctuary zones.
  24. I was driving across the bridge at Narrabeen one day. Pelicans sit on the light poles. I copped a full dose. Disgusting brown liquid all over the bonnet, windscreen (I had to use the wipers) and roof. I nearly puked. Between that and making a pain of themselves when trying to release fish in the lake, well lets just say as a bird I rate them just above a Plover. Don't get me started on Emu's.
  25. Haha, the things we do for that favorite lure. As far as "an electric fence while straddling it (enough said haha)." OUCH. Bad enough touching one with ya hand.
