  1. Thanks for the thumbs up on these particular trailer bearings Bill S ... Geoff was only telling me recently when he was fitting a pair of bearing buddies for me that it's still possible to get some seepage thru the seals at the back regardless and, as has already been mentioned, especially when launching the boat while the hubs are still hot.. It's good to have a particular brand of trailer bearings recommended by a mechanic such as yourself, thank you for that. It's high time that all trailer bearing manufacturers took more care in regard to the design and the quality of the trailer bearings they produce...towing a boat and having a poorly made trailer bearing collapse may be not necessarily be regarded as being an insured event but the fault of the bearing manufacturer, and losing a trailer wheel due to a faulty bearing could also lead to loss of life... Cheers jewgaffer
  2. Good result Poddy Trapper and a nice flathead for the young fello too..for a moment I thought the hook on the jighead was deeply embedded in someone's hand Cheers jewgaffer
  3. Awesome stuff Nanook no fear of boogieman's either I reckon you'd be just the bloke to send down into Flint and Steel and see what's going on down there Cheers jewgaffer
  4. Any uncorrected winking could turn into a bigger problem Barry.. you'd eventually run out of warranty on laser nose replacement therapies Cheers jewgaffer
  5. Player 1 A confident opinion from an expert on circle hooks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLoOi9LCh6g&feature=related Cheers jewgaffer Player 2 This never give up expert's opinion speaks for itself
  6. I'm glad the spot produced for you Andrew, I knew you had hooked up something decent when my mobile beeper went off as the pic came thru .. it's not the sort of spot where you'd except to catch jewfish but it's a good place to settle into during a southerly and apparently the jew think so too ... I was hoping to hear that you'd hooked up the same jew that owes me a Tiger rod and an irreplacable Tica reel that went overboard due to one of those useless plastic rod holders exploding back in January...I would be reluctant to even swap an apple for a hundred of the things .... While the whole river is loaded with soapies, I have an idea that the bigger fish are likely to be sweating on the bait fish that gather around the box head side and are getting into them during the run out tide. It might be a good idea to slip down from Bayview and fish the run out just out from both Little box Hd and also the bait grounds just around the eastern cnr of Box Head as there were lots of trag there during the floods we had a couple of years ago.. Cheers jewgaffer
  7. Hi Joe If you can't find what you are looking for at Huey's and elsewhere, I am considering updating the power of my 35hp motor to 60hp as, due of the state my back, I have a need to have extra passengers on board to help out with launch and retrieve etc ... I'm not sure if the going rate of my 1996 35hp Evinrude Elan is going to be out of your price range or not as this motor is in excellent condition and has been well looked and runs beautifully.. It is a 3 cylinder model with hydrofoil, has a 4 blade Solas prop and comes complete with forward controls and 4 guages... the last service was done by Huett marine only a few months ago and the written compression test you get from Huey shows it has an even 140 psi on all three cylinders.. It was going to be a lot easier for me to trade it in on the new 60....it's still on the boat at this stage and if you are interested in making me an offer you are welcome to start it up etc and have it fully inspected... Cheers jewgaffer ................................................................................................................ Thanks heaps for the offer jewgaffer havent heard from huey yet but ill keep you in mind. What price range would you be looking at anyway? And do you think a 35hp would be enough to pull around my 15ft nautiglass v150? Cheers Joe ................................................................................................................... Hi Joe I notice your 15' nautiglass already has a 40hp motor on it so unless it's a motor beyond repair or evaluation for that matter, and, if you haven't already done so, why not start off smart and at least get a price from Huey to rebuild it for you... In regard to my 35hp 3cylinder Evinrude Elan the price I would expect to get for it in all fairness would be only the going rate for such a motor .... As far as horse power is concerned, I had a 40 on my previous boat, a 15 1/2 foot fibre glass Mustang centre console...the mustang was rated for 40 but you could mount a 70hp on it if you wanted to and were confident you could afford the cost of repairs to a 70 no matter what might happen... running costs, services and the cost of repairs are always of some concern to everybody particularly when downgrading to a smaller boat for example. My 35hp Elan would have run the mustang along nicely under normal load ie a family with young children but my savage has a recommended horse power of 50hp , whereas the 35hp evinrude was very economical to run and cheaper for me to have repaired if anything went wrong. It's a new ball game now and the weight of my second live bait tank, other add ons, plus having two heavy deep cycle batteries up the front would weigh as much as a couple of passengers anyway. The horse power you chose depends on what you want to do with the motor and you wouldn't be able to find more genuine advice than the advice you would get from either Huey or Roger anyway. Cheers jewgaffer

  9. Congratulations on reaching 1000 posts Roostermen all down to earth too, easy for everyone to relate to and always informative ... the fact that my fishraider mate is a now jewfish has an important bearing on my next sentence I think the word itself could well indicate that when Roberta comes down it might be a good omen for us to have a Brooklyn start with Cam and Roberta and try to find a few soapies or anything that will at least show Roberta the same colours as the fish she's used to identifying. Lovely to hear Marlin are still around I'll keep my eyes open next time I visit the eastern suburbs lol... BTW Steve tell Jamie if we don't get any jew you can still get a few bucks off a couple of tiagras which at a push of a button can take lines to cater for everything else including blackfish Cheers jewgaffer
  10. Clem try something different- grab a couple of small crab trap buoys to use as floats on fixed lines using 80lb braid and have a couple of set lines with three loop paternosta rigs... On each rig use three of the biggest fresh baits you can get hold of and have a 1/2 lb snapper lead fixed on the very bottom of each rig to keep the line upright...make the three short paternosta loops all even in length on each rig out of say 60lb fluorocarbon leader and use a ball sinker to keep the line straight and the baits below in firm contact with the buoy....use fish and squid Only monitor the bite situation and leave the lines alone... when a decent size fish hits the buoy will spring back up and sink the hooks in for you... have a lumo bead directly below the ball sinker going to the leader swivel and use the dropper loops for tying a palamar knot over a single 5/0 hook and just force some split lumo beeds over the palamar wraps directly above the bait and glue the split beads together- lumo beads glow if they are primed under torchlight and will also hold a short paternosta loop together nicely as well. Find some deep water around the moored boats near the Sydney side of the Spit bridge... you'll easily find forty feet to fish in and try deeper too as there's 80 to 100 foot of water in that area ...Drop the buoys out of the back of the boat and raise the snapper lead two, three to four metres off the bottom and leave them there as fixed lines while you fish with the lighter lines. Clem let's see if this catches you a decent size fish or two. Cheers jewgaffer
  11. Terry I'm happy to share this sort of happiness too but as to a suitable sauce for surgeon fish I'm not too sure where you would be able buy liquid anaesthetic.. Cheers jewgaffer
  12. 1. since the fish were definitely there, would i be correct in then concluding that the problem(s) are likely due to rig setup and/or squidgy type and/or retrieval? . . . Hi spoz I'll just add a few ideas for you to consider, that's about all...Paulthetaffy is right on the ball.. I would just like to say, it would also be a good idea to see how the particular lure swims in the water before you cast.. Each time you cast just pretend that an invisible fish is looking at the lure, passing by or marking time not far away and feeling the vibrations... work the lure stop and start with the rod tip i.e. in a teasing manner and slowly slowly catch a monkey as they say ...just for a moment or two work the lure as though it was a small fry swimming along merrily and every so often make it dart a few times.... pause and take up the slack each time you pause, drop the rod tip for a split second and let the lure fall as though it was dead and then only liven it up slightly as you reel in slowly at first and the spped up little and so on. ............................................................................................................... 2. The tide however carries the bread away. .fish did manage to take the bread, but they were very small fish and also out of range of casting anyway. If your fishing directly into deep water walk up current about 5 -10 metres away and throw out a weighted burley container with slow seepage, tie the cord off and fish around it.... don't worry about about the current in deepwater, the current wont take the burley away it would be just like diving under a wave at Bondi and fish would swim towards the source of the burley anyway ......................................................................................................................... 3. Is it safe to eat fish from the Georges? If the fish are edible and look healthy, yes ............................................................................................................................... 4. When cleaning my rod/reel is it ok to just hose the whole darn thing? Or even just dunk it straight into a bucket of clean water? Keep reels out of water and sand. Clean the outside of the reel thoroughly with a slightly wet sponge and clean the crevices etc with a soft toothbrush... ..................................................................................................................... 5. When i used whole prawns on the hook it managed to get more strikes than splitting up the larger prawns into smaller segments. . .is that my imagination or just myth? Fish go on sight and vibration.. passing fish notice larger baits more easily ......................................................................................................................... 6. If you're trying to aim for larger fish. . do you just simply use larger hooks and bait? Does this 'prevent' smaller bream/fish from taking your bait? or they still take your bait, it's just that they wont be able to get hooked on a larger hook? Smaller fish can still get caught on the barb inside of the gape of a sharp 10/0 for example If you use bigger baits, two extra strong little no2 suicide hooks is a good way to cover yourself provided that you leave the rod alone and let the fish take the bait.. Big baits attract peckers so use tough thick bait such as squid or back to back fillets but with the skin on the outside on this occasion A big fish might just happen to come along and see or sense smaller fish taking nips out of the bait and then just swoop on the bait like a rottweiller would grab a leg of lamb from a pack of poodles.... ............................................................................................................................ Cheers jewgaffer
  13. Hi Scotty I don't use circle hooks myself.. Even when I was trying to put a bait on a circle hook properly I finished with my elbow in my mouth. Here's one for you... people who do tie them, instead of threading the line thru the back of the hook, they thread the leader line thru the front of the hook and always make the wraps along the shank ... apparently threading the line thru the front of a circle hook changes the hook swing on hook up... use a piece of meat or something see if you can see why Cheers jewgaffer
  14. Hi trouthunter I think all fish are smart particularly when it comes to survival and loyality to their ilk and to the school as well ... but daring and greed can get them into trouble..I believe that schools of the same species protect one another and the fastest or maybe the oldest or weakest of the species could well become sacrifricial on the day...and detour predators away so as to give the school time to head for safety...salmon schools for instance, if you go in too close they play games with you and bob up somewhere else or behind you etc so you fish away from the boil up and fish wide of the school and use a hardbody like a little gillies no7 and slowly bump off a few of the scouts and so on..... another example would be tailor going off the bite and balling up around pylons etc and sacrificing a few to the jew for instance and then fleeing in mass.. Some species like cat fish and eels for example certainly communicate together but they are so greedy that they are actually gluttons for punishment,,considering the fact that if you happen to strike a school of these unfortunate creatures they can actually cost you at least $50 a session in squid, hooks and leader material. As to jewfish, as smart as they are I reckon they'll drag anything along just to squeeze the calcium out of it and a few will fall for the same you caught the first one on ...as to bream, when the bite goes off just move downcurrent a bit but change the bait you were using.. Cheers jewgaffer
  15. You definately are progressing Basil ... you're certainly up to it and can afford a couple of twelve inch Alveys for your bottom bashing and a Tiagra or two so it would be a good idea to invite some of our better deep sea fishermen to go out with you and just keep your eyes open both fish wise and safety wise...you'll soon find next time you go out early and fish off national park you'll have the gear ready and you'll be wanting to run some of your stripies and bonito for bait.. The back is ok to a point I suppose Basil but my doctor has to look at recent scans taken around both hip areas and things seem to be locked up hurting my legs real bad, so I still can't handle the boat on my own and I sure miss fishing the beaches ... Why don't you give George a call and arrange to go down to Wanda with Leon or better still go in opposite the old dog track at Wollongong. George and Leon like to spread the rods out and would appreciate the extra man for the waist deep stuff Cheers Byron
  16. Good effort Basil, George will be astounded this result certainly proves that the whole area from Wollongong to Newcastle and at least a thousand kilometres seaward is holding so many fish every three feet that there must be standing room only in any direction Cheers jewgaffer
  17. Hi Dicko I suppose you have already tried to open the driver's side door with the key? the central locking device mightn't be functioning and especially if the car battery is as flat as a tack... Cheers jewgaffer
  18. Well done Luke you'll be in with a big chance if you head up early and fish with Roberta for a few days and then repeat the dose in the grand final Cheers jewgaffer
  19. Good luck with the new boat Nathan I hope you catch plenty of big fish out of casting distance at Blues Point for starters Cheers jewgaffer
  20. Many happy returns on your 51st Birthday Stewy...I hope Donna shouts you at least 50 more annual fishing trips to Fiji too Cheers jewgaffer
  21. Good take home result Peter good to see that Syd's not smoking havana cigars these days cheers jewgaffer By the way Pete....have a look at this particular paternosta..you and Syd might be interested in rigging up your paternosta supply this way instead of using a dropper loop... I use the same knot but with more unnecessary wraps it seems and it's interesting to see this knot tied by making a couple of loops in the line rather than tying it with a free end...I think a standard dropper might tend to cut back into mono because it forms a natural 90 degree loop whereas compared to a standard dropper you'll see how different this particular loop looks as soon as you tie it... I use the full loop and tie a palamar knot for the hook and have a couple of split green lumo beads hard up against the hook over the palamar wraps to hold the loop together better and then glue the slits back up and also glue the beads together... lumo beads primed under a torch will light up at night and having beads just above the hook also helps to protect the line from toothy fish.
  22. Grant congratulations on reaching 3000 posts your posts are always modest and your advice to the members has consistently proved to be well tried and spot on Cheers jewgaffer
  23. Hi Kosta 1 I think if you would have had the time available to start off late this afternoon and fish on into the night instead of going out this morning I think that might have made a big difference to your general results today .... In the middle of the afternoon today you could actually feel the difference in the outside air which really was and still is quite balmy particulary for anyone considering fishing the run in tide in the shallows tonight from six thirty onwards and then fishing the run out tide with big baits either alongside the green marker off molineaux or cast a couple of big baits in the channel just out from the third runway... Cheers jewgaffer
  24. Hi Fishsong Most estuary fish are seasoned travellers and spawn anywhere along the coastline regardless of season provided that conditions suit in the particular part of the coastline... While Sydney has never been regarded as a fishing haven it seems to be not far from being a full on fishing haven right now... Going on the numbers of fish caught in general including the out of season and quite a few out of area species that have encountered over the past 18 months or so, there seems to be a radical change happening in our part of the coastline ..Thus in answer to your question - if you were in a position where you are able to go out often enough for the rest of the year for instance, you would more than likely strike almost any predominant northern or colloquial southern species at some stage or other and especially due to the fact that there's been a mile of fish caught in general all over the Sydney area and the over abundance of yellow fin bream is particarly noticable which I'd say may well be at the expense of the central south coast ... In respect of your question about pelagics coming into the Sydney area, or perhaps coming in close or coming in around the heads for instance - As an example of how tuna travel looking for better conditions, the Bermagui trawlers often used to spend many a Christmas as far north as Mooloolabah and Maroochydoor.. a friend of mine was associated with a far northern boat that was doing a run last year said they travelled as far south as Sydney ... One particular winter which seems like decades ago Sydney experienced an over abundance of trevally and tarwhine and this year Botany Bay had been showing fair catches of Tarwine in the summer months and apparently the schools are still here even at this stage of winter...So it will be interesting to see how well this winter fishes for tarwhine. In previous winters there were no fish all thru the run out at Captain Cook Bridge and the jew baits would get suddenly hit out of nowhere by a big school of trevally throw backs and that was general always on the most miserable nights imaginable .. Cheers jewgaffer
  25. Sounds like a very lively session Gary... No wonder the jackets p...d off , their bladders would have copped a pretty good dose of bile left in the water by the turd fish schools... Cheers jewgaffer
