  1. Definitely can use lures, the only factor is the type used to the trolling speed. People downrig with lures in salt & fresh water. If it were me I would avoid large bibs if your planning to have a faster troll speed but its a matter of trial & error with what you select.
  2. @Josh edwards You need to look at the map legend to assess what is acceptable in the yellow habitat protection zone.
  3. Great write up, there is plenty of people on here that will get a lot out of this
  4. 1st thing to do is to obtain a paper version locally or download the Port Stephens marine park map which will show you where & where not to fish & collect from. Not at home atm but I seem to recall that part of Jimmys is restricted but check the map on that
  5. Unfortunately younger people think smart technology is helping their sociability because they are all over social media but its actually inhibiting people making a personal connection which is the best connection you could ever have. Take off the headphones people, put the phone in your pocket & turn to a stranger next to you & just say hello! You never know where it may lead!! Great story, thanks for sharing
  6. Nice work on the trifecta I can't seem to even get a quinella atm 😊
  7. Is the stipulation in this thread that you had to be tired as sometimes these things happen to me even when I am not 🙄 🤣 A few years ago I just bought a my 1st new crab pot, spent some time setting it up to be legal & reinforcing it with cable ties etc, set up the nylon rope at 4 equal points coming into 1 in the centre I was going to tie the main line to with the float. Took it out & found what I thought would be a good spot & dropped it over the side & then held onto the main line with the float waiting for all the slack to take up before dropping that over only it never happened. I had forgotten to tie the main line to the centre line on the pot & had already gone about 50mtrs past where I dropped it 🤪 I scoured the area for 15 minutes or so but couldn't find it & went home with my tail between my legs. Its a good thing they are only $15 😂
  8. Its not a dull question at all, just trying to get to what it is exactly your asking instead of guessing! I'm sure some rock fish's will chime.in here soon but yeh like I said if I were Rock fishing that's what I would do but it does all depend on many factors so there is no 1 answer. Squid size? Rat kings or 10kg kings,?
  9. Good to see have finally decided to sell everything mechanical, hire a handyman/caretaker/gardener in one & go fishing 4 times a week. Life is to short to do mundane or work tasks if you don't have to! Noooyce 😁
  10. What is it you need to know?? About what rig to use?? You have to be a bit more specific in your question! Im not a rock fisherman but the way I see it you could set it up like for life any live bait(yakka's/slimeys etc), ala natural unweighted, on a float/ballon or a bottom paternoster or running sinker rig. All depends on location as far as ledge/depth & conditions go. Probably 20-30lb braid with longish 20-40lb mono/fluro leader. Its a very open question.
  11. That's quite a montage there Scratchie, some great memories & good times. While hampered by the weather I still enjoyed the PS winter gathering, meeting some top people which is what the forum is all about. Looking forward to pulling one of those the next gathering & get my picture on the score board 😁 Hopefully 2020 will be kind to us all. Happy New year FR
  12. What makes you think the fuel is stale? Just because of its age? Id run it on land to see how it performs, maybe put a measured amount of a fuel treatment like Fuel Doctor before you do this! https://fueldoctors.com.au/product/ Also your tank being 90% full would have been better on the fuel than if there was 10ltrs so I be inclined to use it rather than just ditching it. But yes local councils either have depots or do a service at different times of the year. I have taken paints, used batteries, oils, chemicals, expired gas bottles etc to the local council depot without issue but it depends on your council!
  13. Is that due to lack of tidal flow or another reason you think?
  14. It only takes a couple of nice fish per trip to keep you satisfied right Nice Vid to
  15. Great info for the novice & experienced alike. Thanks for sharing Wazza
  16. Well Matty congratulation is in order, not just for getting to the point that you are now but the fact you did persist, you leant new things to get you to this point. You will never stop learning, whether its about the fish themselves, the tackle, the tides, the conditions, even tying different knots. As to answer your second sentence statement, what annoys the hell out of me is when people putting in their 1st post & want to know all your spots, what bait you used, what time you were there, what rig you used etc etc without making any real effort themselves, It takes half a lifetime to acquire knowledge & with minimal to no effort people expect, that right EXPECT that we are all going to drop at our knees & hand out the fish on a silver platter. Anyway enjoy what you have leant & I look forward to seeing more great captures
  17. Yep start of with small steps is the way to go. @Vexx, there is plenty of information in here on locations & techniques if you are willing to do the work in researching by using the search tab. Getting knowledge on a specific species, their habitat & what they will take(bait or lures/SP's etc) & what lines/rigs etc will help you greatly. Some similar type posts- People who don't fish think you just put a bit of bait on a hook, throw it in the water & hey presto you get fish. What they don't understand is the work & time it takes learning & refining how you fish to suit conditions & your target! Good luck
  18. Welcome to the forum @Blockade runner You might have to be more specific for most of us on your intended use but I can only comment because I just received a Shimano Jewel rod for xmas which has Fuji K guides. I haven't tried it yet but the rod was intended to be coupled with a baitcaster so the K guides were a deciding factor in being an anti tangle design. If they can do what they are suggesting then it can only benefit you with any line but yeh it would most likely benefit braid as it is the line more susceptible to tangle over mono.
  19. Welcome to the forum @Wato Im sure one of the Hacking members will be able to offer you some good advice here 👍
  20. Still enough for a couple of feeds. Well done
  21. Didn't think to ask that question but yes more info at the start of the thread helps in the search for the right answers!
  22. Come on @bcooper21003, the little bloke looks like he did all the work & now your claiming it as shared 🙄😉😊🤣 Nice catch & combined effort Edit, good on you @JonD 👍
  23. You might get something from this?
  24. Yes sounds like one of the 3 culprits I mentioned. I have had 5 & 7' plastics totally disappear from the jigheads before, most likely small school of jackets on that occasion. If this is happening its time to move onto a different location!
