  1. The mower will still be there tomorrow- the fish may not 🤣🤣 That’s my excuse 🤣🤣
  2. I don’t have that problem - single, no kids so fishing here I come 🎣🎣🎣🤣🤣🤣
  3. https://archives.cjr.org/language_corner/language_corner_072814.php#:~:text=That's because “aught” can mean, that was originally a mistake.
  4. I originally thought that this saying may have come about from wartime surgery but from what I have read early sutures were #1,#2 etc and sizes 1/0 (0) thru to 6/0( 000000) appear to be 20th century designations . 1/0 is thicker than 6/0 .
  5. Nice feed ! Hey Yowie do you ever fish at night for whiting in the port ? I have a hankering for a run up tide night time whiting fish using nippers - was thinking of Swansea but port hacking is way closer !
  6. Well one thing I do know is if you ain’t got a bait or lure in the water you ain’t gunna catch anything regardless of the moon , tide cycle or barometer reading ! I often ask my mate if he is going out on the weekend and usually get a reply of too windy , too cold , swell too big or wrong tides - my reply is if you sit there waiting for the perfect conditions you will die of old age before you ever go fishing again !
  7. Probably the same reason they drive on the wrong side of the road, use 110v for domestic supply , call petrol gasoline and on and on etc - if you can answer that then you will have solved one of the greatest mysteries of all Now can we pick on the kiwis???? There are some real gems in there
  8. It could be worse - hooks could use the same size designations as drill bits ! Metric , inch, letter and number sizes . I’m waiting for someone to put a # in front of the hook size
  9. Weirdest use of the aught thing is with a rifle cartridge 30-06( 30cal, released 1906), Americans call it 30-aught 6 but pronounce 1906 as 19 oh 6 as do we. Here it is 30-oh 6. You are probably right there Zoran - aught is naught without the N . I don’t know the origin of the bar oh designation -4/0 ( four bar oh ) surprised it isn’t pronounced four forward slash oh
  10. I have heard a saying that when the moon is up during the day the fishing will be bad during the day , I never payed much attention to it . Thinking about it makes me wonder if this has something to do with the prawns running during the dark of the moon ? Maybe the fish are gorging themselves on the prawns at night and digesting during the day ?
  11. I think aught is an American term . I would say four oh .
  12. I have edited the above quote to save on typing . Lure size/ weight / colour or type are something that has to be assessed for each location and situation . Reel size is to balance the rod - I prefer a tiny bit butt heavy , some like the longer rod for extra distance and the rod should be selected so it suits the lure weight range being used - for most flathead fishing in the scenario you described most 2-4 kg rods will work ( my daiwa hyper is 2-6kg but I feel this is over rated and to me feels more like 2-4kg and rated for 4-14gm lures ) probably a bit heavy for 4gm and a bit light for 14gm but it has done it with no problems . Brand is irrelevant as is cost - even cheap gear isn’t too bad today but if you want to fork out 3k for an outfit that’s your business and I say go for it -one area this is reversed is fly fishing - cheap rods are not worth buying ! I feel the two things you should look at buying decent quality is the braid and the leader material -cheap braid can be a nightmare and cheap leader or fluoro will let you down when you need it . What I consider the perfect combo for me will differ to what someone else like Derek or Mike ( little flattie)would consider perfect for them - trick is to work out what suits you and your style of fishing -the specs I have mentioned will get you in the window but you will have to tune it to your liking .
  13. I take fishing from the shore ? Bait or lures ? Any particular species or just trying for anything ? Although not on the lane cove - I fished woolwich wharf recently and a couple of kids caught a few keeper size flatties and a decent bream straight off the front of the wharf using bait . There is also clarkes point and Kellie’s bush reserve nearby . The wharf is free parking but you need to get there early - around 6am as the handful of spots fills quickly with people going to work via the ferry.
  14. I have been checked twice in 4 yrs , last guy I talked his ear off so maybe they have a warning on their system - don’t expect to get away in less than 20min with this boat
  15. Great report and a nice feed there Yowie! I have seen some drone footage of some big schools of salmon down there recently - still need to catch one to try in the smoker .
  16. Great report mate ! sounds like the lower section hasn’t fired up yet .
  17. We used to have the river shut off for the bridge to bridge , never heard any complaints about that . Do divers have to pay a fee or for dive permits ?- if not then maybe a permit or fee that is in line with our rec fishing fee could be implemented ? I got no problem with the canoe or kayak paddlers , they are only using the ramp because it is easy to get a lot of vehicles in there at once and for this once a year event - 99% of they time don’t need a ramp . Rowers I won’t go into!
  18. Yep they happen ! Can’t say i was impressed with the colour of the water though - it had that milky green look to it which i have seen before in the harbour , i was once told it is a form of algae bloom which happens when the water temps spike . All i know is every time i have seen it we caught nothing but a couple of kids got a few flatties and a bream off the wharf so maybe I’m wrong 🤷
  19. I was over the hill at woolwich trying for luderick- massive donut day 😞 The thing with fishing as a whole that many don’t see is how many branches there are to it ! Rod building , fly tying, lure making , some of the old timers made their own reels and tackle boxes and so on - that is why it is the greatest pastime of all !
  20. The only thing worse than getting your fishing gear flogged is getting ya grog stolen ! My gear gets locked in the car as soon as i get back to the park/ campground , the sounder comes out along with anything else that can be unloaded at the local hock shop .
  21. If you use pillies from a tackle store or petrol station freezer and then try the still frozen food grade ones from a fish market you will see a difference. Bait that you have caught and processed yourself will be far better than what you buy . Fresh is best but nothing will ever beat live .
  22. You got a nice feed ! Gotta be happy with that !
