Neptune273
Hi All, Strange post this one , let me explain why it is strange. Fishing my local area Yarramundi last Friday afternoon chasing the usual fish like Bass , Carp , Trout etc using a beetle spin felt a solid hit and some head shakes and thought to myself that does not feel like a Bass! Well it surely was no Bass.... A very healthy Dusky Flathead came up and ate my lure right at my feet! In absolute disbelief that a Flathead would come so far up river into the fresh i took a few photos and released back into the system to fight for another day. So the next day I decided to target Flathead and switched over to soft plastics to see if anymore were about. The next hour my son and I caught 11 good sized Flathead and a Trout! Decided to keep 3 fish for the table and let the rest go. All fish were chockablock with small fish so maybe they travelled this far up into the fresh to eat them? Was strange but fun few days.

LuckyFil
That is weird, catching trout and flathead in the same area!
Little_Flatty
@Neptune273! Trout and flathead in the same session! Now that’s a spectacular experience, now immortalised in a great report! Some others were just talking about flathead being caught in fresh water, interesting to see it backed up in significant numbers.
R E G I C Y C L E
Crazy hey? There's been a few reports from Yarramundi recently of people catching flatties. There was a video on YouTube recently of a guy rescuing 2 flatties and a brown trout that got stranded in a back water! Can't be many places in the world where such different species exist together. big Neil
Not unheard of Flathead existing in very fresh water, but certainly unusual. They look like very nice sized fish. Great post accompanying your excellent photos. Well done to you both. bn
dirvin21
They can appear a long way up river, we often catch them targeting bass in certain area

ginko
Very odd! I was up the Grose this week... no trout there. I thought the water was way too warm. Something like 20 or 22 degrees. Did you happen to measure the temp at yarramundi?

Volitan
Yarramundi is roughly 3 km below the upper limit of the saltwater in the Hawkesbury. The saltwater flows up as a ‘wedge’ - salt on the bottom and freshwater above. This suits flathead, being bottom dwellers. It also suits stingray - giving rise to persistent rumours of monster bass and cod in the Hawkesbury which break you off as soon as hooked. saltwater penetrates up to 143km up the Hawkesbury, measured from the mouth. the trout, however, is a surprising catch. Pickles
Great work @Neptune273 - it might be a while before you do that again😁 (I pretty regularly get flathead whilst Bass fishing in freshwater). Congratulations to you
corro
Very interesting report! Never would have thought trout and flathead in the same session to be a possibility.

It was quiet warm and the trout seemed to be very active in chasing fast moving lures and were coming to the surface rather than sitting near the bottom. Isaac Ct
Very interesting as mentioned, trout and flathead seem the most unlikely pair of fish in the same area.

Aussie_fisher
The flatties look to be in top shape. Great job on the catches. Been fishing on the Nepean myself, but haven’t ever heard of anyone catching flatties there.
