  1. No point fishing where.the.fish aren't! You do have to do some exploring to find where they hang out. As.mentioned some species like bream like structure while flathead like a mostly sandy bottom so it depends what you want to catch. Burleying can attract fish but not where they dont really want to be.
  2. I was going to say they are reported to be pretty good on the tooth. Id definitely like to get my hands on one to try it! Interesting to see there is no size limit in NSW either, bag limit of 5!!
  3. This is the one I caught a long time ago, if I had of been able to measure it properly is probably close to 60cm at the fork which on the calculator comes in at approx. 3.5kg. Went back so might me 6kg by now 😀 Date stamp on the pic is 9/5/2012, boy time flies 😅 On my next outing im definitely going to be getting some livies so hopefully this will get me into one of these or a King
  4. Sweet, Im after a salmon for my next so called 'poor mans fish' cooking/eating challenge. Got one in the same area a few years ago & it was a nice fish, though it was a nice king the way it pulled. I'll have to find the picture, recon it wat around 3kg?
  5. Welcome to FR Sounds like you would be restricted to lakes really unless there are some steams close to road access? Have a look at these sites, you may get something from them or be able to make contact for info via them? https://www.visitmelbourne.com/Regions/High-Country/Things-to-do/Outdoor-activities/Fishing https://www.victoriashighcountry.com.au/nature/fishing/ Good luck.
  6. Thanks for the report. Did you get the salmon inside our outside the bay?
  7. I tend to stick to 8lb on my light set ups buts that's because I don't target one species, fluro leader can go up or down. If its bream you really want tp target as a suggestion if you haven't already done so see if you can find some footage/tv show of the NSW bream tournaments for gaining tips & strategies. I watched one recently which I cant recall the name(Mark Berg was host) & its was a great watch & gave me a good bit of info, I myself am going to target bream a but more & Im going to buy some crank baits & vibes over SP's, they seam to be all the rage at the moment.
  8. Having a look through the previous hacking thresds via the search tab will give you some ideas.
  9. Welcome aboard. One could go into all sorts of 'this rod & reel VS that rod & reel' but to me what you have put down sounds like a good combo to me.
  10. I didn't realise Cobia frequented these waters?
  11. Yeh & what happened when the year 2000 rolled around????? Nothing, the world didn't explode & humanity didn't descend into kaos 😅 Sure some electrical equipment with calendars is preset with a set date stamp but doesn't mean they will cease to function after that date rolls around. Eg, if its a digital clock it will still tell the time but wont give you the right date.
  12. Lol I know its the terminology for Kings but it just the way you wrote it that reminded me of quite a few times as a kid seeing real rats the size of domestic cat while fishing off the wall. The biggest rats to date I have ever seen! Havent seen them for a while but the coop & surrounding area is a lot different now, no traps all over the place etc.
  13. There are published recommendations(pretty sure its from DPI?) where fish shouldn't be consumed on our Sydney waterways & also when they can the amounts you should consume. If you do some googling you will find those recommendations.
  14. So I tried a couple of different types on mats but the hull shape being a big V in the front & the floor corrugations started to annoy me so as mentioned I went down the path of 2 decks/platforms between the seats in my tinny. With some longer cross members that fitted to the last/lower rib & a couple of small lengths of 2x4's shaped to the hull & its a solid fit. I thought the cross beams should be turned upwards for strength but then I wanted more width on the rib seams for support, took a little while to get it mocked up & in hindsight I guess I could have fitted a vertical beam along the centre but with the 2x4's in the middle its pretty solid, well solid enough to easily hold my 110kg frame 😅 I also like it that way because apart from being able to stand on an even surface for casting with SP's when I throw in my tackle boxes & esky etc its all level & getting to the anchor up front much easier. Anyway that's my set up, simple as it is & I like it but as mentioned with no ballast you do need to watch what you are doing with you feet placement & very sudden movements & keep you fishing partner informed of what your doing. Each to their own
  15. When I get home I will put up pics of my mod to my 14ft tinny. Basically 2 small marine ply platforms between each seat & covered in marine carpet, glued & fixed with brass screws. Can be reasonably easily removed. I just wanted a good solid platform for standing & casting mainly when SP fishing but of course I have to be careful as it can easily rock the boat being so small & especially if someone is also standing.
  16. While the set up doesn't really alter you will find your choice of plastic can produce different results species wise. Some plastics are sort of species specific like say gulp worms, they may get into whiting or bream/squire while shads may get you into things like flathead/snapper etc that's my theory anyway. I have a tackle box full of different brand/shape/colour/sized plastics accumulated over time, some paddle tails, some shad, wrigglers etc. I figure if one is not working on the day then the ability to change it up could mean success! On a recent outing I trialed some squidgy pro prawn in white for the 1st time & caught 3 species, flathead, flounder & squire, so I was happy with that result & wouldn't be surprised if they were able to catch things like jew or even kings.
  17. Well your casting so the knot effect of braid will be ever present, especially when the wind picks up. Id be inclined to use mono myself, around 10lb, some fluro leader about the same weight & around 1/4oz jighead, anything smaller will probably reduce your cast distance.
  18. I'll say! Mind you at work I use pans or cooking vessels that you can fit a whole beef steer into. But in the home front anything you fit into a 30cm pan to me is a 'pannie' 😉 So more like a 'paella pannie' maybe 😅
  19. Spot on @GoingFishing ! Fish the good days, work around the house shity days. At least thats my philosophy 😊 Nice fish scratchie, you know your spoilt when you stary calling a fish like that 'a pannie' 😂
  20. Plenty of info on mainbar & the hacking if you use the search tab
  21. Ok, just thought it was a charter due to those decals on the inside of your cab area Looks like a sizable vessel you have so nice one 👍
  22. Didn't do mine through any company, for memory I had to fill in a log & get it signed off so a mate helped me there with the practical on his tinny. As to the knowledge test well I read the book once then did this quiz over & over & over till I got 100% a few times in a row. http://www.boatingquiz.com.au/index.php/general-boating-knowledge-quiz/ I actually still do the quiz every now & then as a refresher!
  23. Think you did well really, probably would have spent close to the $200 on the 300mtrs of 65lb braid alone. Some good questions in there thought. I would only generally spool 5-10% of backing line onto a reel for the line class otherwise your taking up to much space imo. Reversing braid, well that's an interesting idea, although not all the line has seen time through the guides its all been salt affected over time so not sure how that would go?? Would it be like turning your undies inside out when they are warn out at the front 😏
  24. Nice one Can you please PM me the name of that charter.
