  1. I invested in an electric smelting pot. It has a 'tap' built in. Mt larger version holds about 10kg. It takes around 30 min to melt a full (cold) pot. I have multiple molds going at the same time so I minimise lost time. If I can get assistance, 2 people preferably, the sinkers fly.... Recently I have moved to a 'new' style of sinker.... I make larger barrel sinkers-- I have around 20 wires to pot in the mold so all I have to do is take a full wire out and put a new one in-- remove the sinkers when they are all cold = 60 sinkers. I them put a womens hair clip into the centre hole of the sinker and crimp the sinker to keep it in place. This forms the eye to connect it to the line. The hairclips are surprisingly rust resistant and last a very long time. I have molds for the larger snapper sinkers too. Once you try an elecric pot "you will never go back...."
  2. ... so that we fisherman who are attempting new challenges can ask the questions and be referred to places where its all been written before........... 🙄 ... or where we will be take seriously and receive the assistance we seek.
  3. Ah.... electrickery...... its all done by elctro-magic...
  4. I have often pondered whether 'skutes' is NZ accent for skirts...
  5. I regularly check my hand held GME VHF to a repeater some 60km away, albeit from my balcony some 15-20m above sea level. (holiday house) I have hit the same repeater from the top of the ranges behind Adelaide, I'm estimating a bit over 100km. Not perfect transmission but I could talk to the VMR on Kangaroo Island. Antenna height IS EVERYTHING. Extra power (25W) helps in crappy conditions. If your being tossed around in heavy weather you WILL wish you bought the fixed radio.
  6. 27Mhz is AM that is why it is subject to atmospheric conditions, including 'skip'.. I have sat in my boat off shore Adelaide and could not talk to a mate that I could see a few Km away. I could however talk to people on Moreton Bay.... I tossed my 27M away. VHF is FM and reliable.
  7. In an emergency, an unlicensed person is permitted to use the radio to call for assistance. It's in the regulations. The BIG advantage of the license is that it teaches you the correct way to use a radio. In an emergency you will not (should not) make errors that make it difficult to understand you or find you or organise the correct assistance.
  8. I used a similar system in my Stacer for around 20 years without a problem... but they do need to be more vertical or the rods may fall out in sloppy water. Just turn the holders around so they go between the horizontal Ali tubes.

    Members Boats.

Surley your deafness is an excuse!!
  10. Nothing wrong with being safe-- instead of 27M (I took mine out) I carry a hand-held VHF too.
  11. There are several reasons NOT to use the 27MHz... they are only 4 watts (VHF is 25W) They are AM and subject to interference (VHF is FM) 27M is subject to atmospheric conditions that do strange things. I'm in Adelaide, on one occassion on the water I could not reach a mate that I could see on the horizon... I could however talk to a bloke on Moreton Bay... Marine Rescue is considering not monitoring 27M. VHF is an international safety standard and is monitored 24/365.25
  12. Unless your device has a physical switch it is drawing power all the time. Soft touch electronic switches require power to work, albeit very little (microamps/milliamps) when off. Safest to have some form of total isolation if your going to leave the boat idle for some time. As Zoran said, either a toggle switch or a battery isolation switch.... or... disconnect a battery terminal.
  13. In SA, Carp are regularly used as crab bait. I 'intend' to fish for then to use as snapper burley... but they will be lubricated with tuna oil. Havent heard of them being used as fish bait though. As for redfin... good eating if from clean water.

    Outboard problems

Well, thanks folks..... I've just learned some valuable information and I shall abandon my bad habits.
  15. I have several of the older Alvey reels that I use for surf fishing. IN this field they are unbreakable and can stand a bath in the dirtiest water. I use mono, not braid, as you do a lot of line control with your fingers--- and braid may just slice them open. THey need a little attention when winding in as there are no level guides, but you quickly adapt. No true LB fisherman should be without at least 1.

    Outboard problems

I have been.... and now that you ask... I'm scared..... should I NOT do this? What is the difference to running out of fuel whilst boating?

    Outboard problems

I've been doing exactly this too....... I also briefly start the engine before I leave home. If it dont start--- I dont go-- but it always has. Have Honda now... electronic-never-fail start... but i still drain the fuel system whilst washing.
  18. Shampoo will prevent fogging on the inside. Apply it sparingly so it doesnt smear. When I rode a motorbike I used apple fragrent shampoo inside my fullface helmet. Clear vision and a pleasant smell.
  19. I thought I had come to the wrong site.... but I eventually worked it out. All good now. thanks Mrss word fisher person.......😀

Howdy Robb.... I'm still in SA... now that you have moved... can I have your old SA waypoints please....? pretty please? .....................🤣
  22. Did better than me... I snapped 2 stainless steel bolts in my Yamahaha water jacket cover..... I sold the boat "as is" and the buyer had the skills to get them out!
  23. "pulled head off.." was this after "tearing hair out" 🤣
  24. I love my Darling dearly... and I know exactly where I stand..... She was going to leave me and take half my money.... but she decided to stay... and have it all..... There are 2 budgets operating in our household.. 'Her money'... and 'our money'
  25. As a matter if interest (YOUR interest...) do some discreet investigation in to the cost of your wife's cosmetics and hair-do's. I found a $60 lipstick melted on my car carpet one time. 4 Hours ago I had a haircut and beard trim --$25. IN THE SAME SHOP... at the same time... my wife had a haircut-- nothing else- she already has very short hair...... $40.00 Stop worrying about the occasional cost of some mandatory equipment necessary to put food on the table....
